Age of Conan: Technical Support and Tweaking

I picked up an ATI 3850HD for $149 at CompUSA. It's eating the game up. On high I am getting about 30 FPS.

I have that same card and the game defaulted to pretty low settings that I haven't really messed around with.

What are your other specs? is your card 512 or 256 MB RAM? When you say high settings you mean just pressing the High button for default High settings or did you manually crank everything up?

It looks like my authentication issues were temporary. I reset the router and was able to log in. I think it was probably just coincidence though, heavy server load probably had more to do with it.

New problem appeared late last night though. I played for a couple of hours without issue then started getting lock ups. It would lock, drop me to the desktop, then give me a vista message about the nvidia driver not responding. It would always recover on its own (though it did get me killed a few times). I don't know if my card was overheating or if it was a game issue. Time to wade through the hell that is the official forums.

I enjoyed what I saw of the game immensely though and being on Ventrilo with Certis, Ely, Rabbit and Gaald made me feel like I was making a podcast :)

make sure you're on the latest driver update 5/16 from NVIDIA

Is there any way to scale the UI? I got it running suprisingly well at 1680x1050 with a 7900GS, but the UI still looks chunky & blocky to me. I couldn't find any in-game options to tweak it, but thought there might be a conf or ini I could take a look at.

there's xml somewhere in the funcom folder... the UI is just chunky/blocky and people are working on making custom UI's

There's WerikUI on Curse that removes some of the blocky UI filler and changes the target frames a bit, and there's MirageUI on the AoC general discussion forum that adds 2 more button bars above the default one.

So I'm highly enjoying the game for the short periods before it crashes on me. I'm running dual core amd and have nividia 9600gt. I'm wondering how many people are having this problem.
I'm also really getting tired of the artifacts that keep popping up every once in a while, although I'm not sure if that is because I only have 1 gig of ram.
I have updated my video drivers and that didn't seem to help with the lock ups.

Wondering if any of you know of any workarounds or if this is something the Devs have to fix

Can you describe these artifacts a bit more?

I had some artifacts when I started messing around with the settings more than I should have. They went away though, just be realistic in setting your sliders, and make sure you update your video card drivers for sure. It's the same artifacts I used to see when trying to OC my video card past what I should have, so it might be heat/cooling related as well.. AoC runs my laptop way hotter than WoW used to, that's for sure.

When doing the volcano quest (the one where it errupts) does anyone have the impact of the craters be a funky blue color? It almost looks the same as the funky blue color on the cimmerian body tatoos. Also did anyone notice that the "cut scene" animations aren't working properly? For instance the volcano ritual...for me she just stood there with her hand out then a bottle appeared and the blood fell from it with absolutely no movement from her.

I installed a new 8800 GT (512MB) last night, and I'm running with 2G RAM and a Core Duo 6400. I maxed out all settings and sliders at 1680 x 1250 to see what it would do. Oddly enough, the framerate would stay nice and high, but many detailed textures wouldn't load. And in random areas, near and far. For instance, the detailed wood texture on part of a bridge, or a single character, or a door, just wouldn't appear even though everything else looked fine.

I pulled back some of the view distance sliders to around 70% and that seemed to help. All other settings are still maxed, and the game runs quite nicely and looks better than I expected.

Last night I had a lot of problems with what I assume was server-side lag. I died more than once because combat routines got stuck and the next thing I knew I'd been hacked or chomped. I also had a number of NPC conversations that would get get stuck midway through for 10 seconds or so. Nothing game-breaking, just little annoyances.

Yup and yup, that bug was in beta as well. The blue splotches are kinda weird.

Fly, for what it's worth, I've been seeing a lot more texture dropouts since the last patch, without any change to hardware.

Same here.. thought it was because i was using the 3.0 shader.

Yeah, same issue manifested with me as well. Dropping distance sliders back a bit seemed to mostly clear it up.

Like weird shapes blocking up the screen where textures should be. It will run fine for a little while and then bam 1fps and lockup. It also drops the textures from objects from time to time

If it is running fine for a while then it happens, it sounds like heat.

Yeah, random artifacts like that followed by lock-ups over time can be caused by heat. Or, I should say, it's one of the easier possibilities to test against

Open up your case, point a fan toward it (to keep it cooler and more ventilated) and see if it still happens. Visually inspecting your card's fan and heat sync connection can help too.

Had anyone encountered any issues with running the 2.0 shaders? For some reason, whenever I flip the shader setting to 2.0, all my grass disappears. On a related note, it sometimes switches itself from 2.0 back to 3.0 seemingly at random when I zone (i.e. when I leave the Thirsty Dog Inn).

There's definitely some auto-detect business where the game goes "aha you have a Shader 3.0 capable videocard, let me just change that renderer setting for you real helpful-like" when you are adjusting other video settings. Maybe it's happening at other times too.

I've gotta say even though shader 2.0 increases performance by a decent amount you don't see any spell effects and you don't see quest items that glow. If you can do hack it, I'd leave it on - at least until (or if they can) fix this.

Im on 2.0 and I see both. There's something more specific involved, like maybe nvidia cards on 2.0 can't see it. My ATI can.

I have to say I'm quite impressed by how well the performance scales to mid-low end machines. Running an X2 3600+ and an overclocked 7900gs 256mb, I can play at 1680x1050 with low settings, 2x AA, shaders 2.0 and a few bits of eye candy turned on at a very playable 20-40 fps. And even though the settings are low, the game still looks great. I suspect with future patches the performance will only get better.

Sounds like a heat issue. Turn up your video card fan in Nvidia Control panel, check your System temp and see if anything is getting too hot. 60C for a vid card is ok, but that's too high for a processor.

Elendil--the last time I had the problem I just blew all the dust out of my system and problem fixed.

Anyone playing this game at the lower end of the system spec? I want to give it a go but I'm not convinced my machine will cope, bless it. It's a P4 3.2 Ghz, with 1Gb of RAM and an ATI Radeon X600. I copied that from the My Computer > Device Manager, I don't actually know what it means in terms of pixel shaders and god knows what. I read the back of game boxes and scratch my head.

I play WoW with my settings thus:

...Full-screen glow is off because I don't like it, not for performance reasons, and I can go a bit higher and still play OK, but this is my happy medium setting.

Is WoW on mainly medium == AoC on low, or is AoC as slideshow?

You'll probably only be able to get it to load with the edits that LM used above.

Note on Zone Transition Feeze-Ups:

Turns out, Fields of the Dead also have a bit of a problem with lock-ups like the Leichach (or whatever) Plains. I had it hit me today and I simply could not get back into the game or finish the data load until I found the work-around.

If you get stuck between zones, try turning off all sound/music then attempt to reenter the game. That worked for me and I simply left the problamatic zone and was good to go thereafter.

I'm having bizarre performance issues. The current setup is: Core 2 Duo E6400, 2Gb RAM, Geforce 8800 GT. I bought the 8800GT a few days ago; before that I was running it fine at medium settings with a 7900 GS. When I first installed the 8800 GT I cranked up most settings to high and found it usually ran at around 25-30 fps, 1680x1250.

Sunday night my framerate started to drop, and toward the end of the evening I had some lockups, but nothing drastic. I assumed it was the zone. Today when I brought up the game it could barely crawl. Even with all settings at their lowest I can't get it above 5-8 fps. And the load times have probably quadrupled. It doesn't matter what zone I'm in. Disabling audio has no effect. When I check the CPU usage history I see that the game's completely maxing out my CPU. It's unplayable.

Curiously, I can currently run Crysis acceptably at 1680x1050 on Medium settings with 2xAA, so it doesn't seem to be a hardware issue. Could it be related to the 5/26 patch? Anyone else having these problems? I'm baffled.

I have a sneaking suspicion there's some kind of memory leak still, sometimes I get that as well. I reboot frequently and it seems to go away on a fresh boot.

Does anyone else get AOC to error out after exiting the game? It seems to happen to me if I play for more than two hours.
