Age of Conan General Discussion

Ok I feel dumb for having to ask this question but how do you add a friend in this game? It seems like it should be more straight forward than it is, but I just can't figure it out.

Do not feel dumb. That is a stupid command. STUPID!

That command is a carryover from the first day of Anarchy Online. I guess Funcom figured everyone knew about it by now, but yeah it is just about the lamest command I've ever seen.

Yeah that explains why I would never, ever have figured it out on my own. Thanks guys

Agreed!

People played anarchy online?

No mention of a fix for the trader. :old:

The trader hasn't been fixed. When they had it was up for that glorius two hours in EA it seemed to need work. There was no way to search for Talismans or Staves that I could find. What is great is that I have a bunch of stuff I stowed away, but have since out-leveled.

They also removed the Feat Fixer in Tortage again.

With 3/4 of our floor gone today i figured it'd be safe to peruse the class forums.

It seems like gear in the game is getting changed without any notification. So if you start with a blue item and it turns green dont be surprise. A bit normal for a starting MMO, but unusual for one to not list them in release notes

Well hell... i need to find one elsewhere now. It's been quicker for me due to my Asura Path to jump to Tortage to change my feats.

The chick by the temple in Old T is the only other one I have seen.

I have yet to see any green or blue drops (not quest stuff).

Also I so wish there was a mechanic where you could enter a name or guild and those people's name popped up a different color. Taking the extra few secs to look for a name or guild tag (especially since guild tags sometime show up late) really does NOT mask your intentions.

Any other assassins out there noticed that when you want to stealth some times it randomly says "cannot stealth while being observerd" even when there's nothing/no one around you? Also sometimes it just refuses to stealth for no reason, doesn't even give me a text pop up as to why it didn't hide me. Can be fairly annoying sometimes.

This is due to the light levels normally. Find someplace dark and do it.

If this is so then it is a very very inconsistent system. Sometimes it lets me stealth in full day light (obviously it will break on an enemy if I am in daylight, but it still lets me go into stealth) and I have had the error happen when I am in a dungeon (ie: perfect dark level for stealth) and under trees where I have stealthed previously. I don't know for sure, but I think there might be something a little off here.

I had a green drop off of the slaves on the volcano. It was equal to a quest green I was wearing, so... meh.

@CrashedHardrive - As ranalin said, try a darker area. I've had that happen before, too.

I think there is a Trainer in Khosef as well. They may have added the one in Conarch again (I didn't check). From what I saw in Tortage it looks to be the same NPC situation as we had in the ill-fated EA patch minus the Traders being active. That means the merchant on the Docks at Tortage Night is likely gone again as well. Also the one guy in Tortage (Idogbe or something?) gives the kill 50 Red Hand in Underhalls quest again.

I'm glad I stayed up playing so late last night now. I saw the "servers coming down for an update message" and immediately logged onto my Barbarian (who I've been neglecting) to get my free respec to 2H just in case.

I've seen tons of basically worthless green drops, never a blue though.

For those bow users out there... I read in the manual that you can go to first person and have your distance increase drastically for shooting the bow. Is there a way to rapidly change from first to third person other than scrolling the mouse wheel as fast as possible?

Thanks!

Unfortunately not yet I've been practicing trying to play at the middle point where a slight turn either way will change perspective. That's for dungeons. Out in the open i pretty much stay in 3rd unless i'm trying to hit someone running away.

So I went out exploring with my new toon on the PvP server. I followed the beach that you wash up on past the old man who finds you, and kept on going around the island. I got to the North side, and there was a little bay which I followed towards the inland. It was an exit for a lava flow, which I decided to follow until I couldn't. I made it up a ways, and decided to jump in, get incinerated, spawn at the beach and continue.

I didn't die.

I kept on truckin up the flow, then went up the bank and found the gate from the beach...only I'm on the wrong side. From a few yards away, I had the icon to open the gate, so I jumped up onto the little platform and my icon went away. I figure "Ok, I'll just go jump off a cliff to respawn." I could not get off the platform, I was stuck.

I waited for a minute, deciding on what I could possibly do. If I log out then log in again, I would probably be right here anyway. So after about a minute of pondering, a loading screen popped up, then I was properly loaded into the township area. I bypassed everything from the beach to the town. Now I think I am screwed out of a couple of quest lines.

I don't think I will continue with this guy, just delete and reroll. Interesting exploration though :), I didn't run into any mobs of any kind, or any treasure, but on the way around the island I saw underwater a statue and a wall with an arch.

type /stuck and it should get you moving again.

What's your toon name on DW Reap? I really wish the guild management gets some sort of notes system in place to tell who everyone is, but I expect that will come with a future patch.

5. Combat is smooth and intuitive except for when #4 comes into play. The offense/defense system really appears to a twitch guy like me. Whether my skill actually plays into the game or not, it feels like it does.

7. The PvP is the main selling point of this game. I have to say, killing a would-be ganker who's 3 levels higher than you feels pretty damn good.

Hey Reap, sorry I missed you out there.

re 4. Yeah, thank goodness Mirage (Insomniax) and others are working on the XML reskinning. It was always the first complaint out of my mouth. People are already using his latest work so if you are going to try that again, you might want to look into it. There's a thread out here with the info in it.

re 5. The combat really is one of the selling points. It's not twitch at all, because if you go too fast, it messes up the combos, but moving, positioning, attacking weak points/unshielded sides, and using attacks best suited for changes in the flow of combat all make you feel like you are constantly reacting. From my perspective, it was almost overwhelming at first, but once you settle into this new way of thinking, it because more natural and invigorating.

re 7. The PvP is certainly exciting. I can't wait to see what the Guild Cities offer (guild wide buffs for one!) and what Battlekeep seiges will be like. I haven't tried any mini-games yet, come to think of it. Mostly focussing on the general, open PvP zones.

I find the game even more fun when you get grouped with others, too. Even PvP becomes more interesting with teammates.

I just took my first break from playing AoC on Deathwhisper and a few things stuck out. These random thoughts are from a person who's never played an MMO outside of WoW and who's only reached level 10 in the game (about three hours played.)

1. The game looks very nice but the movement modeling is very weird. My guy runs like he has a stick up his ass. That aside, I absolutely adore the character creation screen and spent plenty of time tailoring my guy. The game runs silky smooth on my 8800GTS.

2. I like the Barbarian class. A lot. (Thanks, Certis!) A good combination of the Fury Warrior and Rogue from WoW. 2H critical strike sneak attacks me giggle. I would tend to think that the other classes are as interesting as this one.

3. AoC feels more like a traditional RPG than an MMO. I don't know if that's a good thing or not but about an hour into the game I found myself thinking that NWN2 at launch wished it would have been this good.

4. The interface is terrible. I'm not going to lie, I hate it. It's blocky and ugly. It needs a pretty serious re-skinning.

5. Combat is smooth and intuitive except for when #4 comes into play. The offense/defense system really appeals to a twitch guy like me. Whether my skill actually plays into the game or not, it feels like it does.

6. The PvE, while narrated and handled differently than WoW's (for example), is nothing spectacular at this point. Pretty standard stuff. The voice acting is quite good compared to other games.

7. The PvP is the main selling point of this game. I have to say, killing a would-be ganker who's 3 levels higher than you feels pretty damn good.

Anyone on the Culture PVP server "Bane"? I just reached lvl 14 and I am having a blast.

Although it made me think a bit. I just got to the "Daylight" island zone (forget the name... gotta take the rowboat out to it from the Tortage docks) and there are tons of people there, all of different factions. As I had issues in Stranglethorn Vale trying to level in my 30s, this island is EXACTLY the same where you really have to watch your back because there is always someone there to kill you. I have to admit, I was quite thankful that only 2/3s of the people there could kill me instead of EVERYONE. I got attacked at least 50 times in my half hour of questing there.

Dont get me wrong, I like PVP and could never see being on a PVE server in WoW, but a free for all type PVP server seems just way too harsh, especially when every single player you see has the potential of attacking you. In this culture PVP, I noticed that there were factional groups going around protecting each other and working together. Was pretty sweet.

Here's a pretty good interview on G4 which talks about the prison and bounty system they plan to have in place!

Oh man, i can't wait to see the prisons filled with spawn campers and Goons!

Yes, because a SCI-FI MMO and a Fantasy/Midevil MMO are the same market segment because they're both made by FUNCOM...

I'm playing an assassin on the PVE Wiccana server and am currently level 18. I gotta ask, does the game get better after leaving the starting area, because as much as I'm tyring to like it, its....boring. While the environments are beautiful, they are very static and dead - reminds me a lot of Guild Wars in that sense. The loot variability sucks. Other than quest rewards, I haven't seen upgrades in several levels. The vendors don't have anything worth buying, no crafting available at my current level, and as for gear drops from mobs, most level 12 stuff has had the same stats as level 1 stuff.

I had high hopes for AoC, but right now, I'm just not finding it very interesting or fun.

Tortelage can get a bit boring (especially the second/third time around), but it does open up a lot once you get off the island.

It's not high fantasy like that other game - I think that turns a lot of people off who are expecting something more shocking or stylized. It's a more realistic, low fantasy representation of a world that feels familiar. The more I play, the more I imagine this as a very young version of our world (which is implied) - it's mysterious and evil enough to get under the skin. There's a real sense of danger out in the wilderness.

The explorer in me has gone nuts hoofing it through the different zones. Running through fields, with the moonlight beaming down, watching all the grass sway as I cut my path through the mountains - hearing wolves howling in the distance - seeing salmon jumping out of streams - watching shadows bounce around realistically - it's damn impressive and very immersive. But that's almost entirely dependent on your system specs, you just won't get that same feeling if you dial everything down.

For the loot, it is a bit funky now, but it's only been a few days. There are some very nice blue and green rewards in the 20s and 30s, but for the most part there doesn't seem to be as much of a race to get gear as there is to quest and do dungeons and such. I'm the loot will be a work in progress, I'd like to see a bit more variety in weapon and armour models, but hey - I'm still in my 30s level wise and no where near end game. I seem to recall wearing a lot of hobo clothes in other games on the way up to the top as well

I'd have to say no, it doesn't get more interesting. It actually gets less interesting to me (relatively). The Destiny quests are such a good idea, so well done that its a shame they can't have them available constantly.

Having said that though, I think Conall's Valley is the best zone I've ever played through in an MMO. It's big, its gorgeous and there's a great deal of consistent quality in all of the quests. The zone has a story that's unified from start to finish and every quest is involved with that story. You can see the evidence of the war between the Vanir and the Cimmerian tribe everywhere. The only disappointing part is that since it's an MMO, we could never actually see the zone change as progress is made.
