Firefly Online

I thought this got cancelled?

The original iteration did, this version is still chugging along.

It looks like it was made in 2001.

I might be overly critical about game that I know nothing about, but my initial reaction is feeling sorry. Firefly is a very precious thing to many of us and it's a bit meh to see that trailer.

edit: But hey, maybe the devs really love what they are doing and it will be an awesome experience on small budget! Still, the first impression is that for some reason I prefer for them to leave Firefly alone.

The little bit they show it feels like it was built with the same engine that made the cancelled StarGate mmo.

I don't care I'll play it.

Also seems this is no longer a MMO.

"online strategic roleplaying game"

Changing channels.

Oh, so it's a social game!

Who knew those were still being made?!?

Yeah I will give this the wait and see cause the trailer did nothing for me.

The trailer did get me thinking that the Firefly universe would be a pretty good setting for an MMO-type game. Specifically, one they don't seem to be making.

The game's website is 404, not exactly inspiring confidence.

I thought I heard the full cast was reuniting for this game.

Funny, I don't remember Yoda being in Firefly

You know what would be awesome. A single player RPG like Mass Effect set in Firefly. Bring the cast back to do voice work. I would kill for that.

That looks....well, it looks pretty terrible. Also as someone on the RPS comments mentioned...in-game Nathan Fillion looks a LOT like a very slightly higher-res Boots from Anachronox.

BUT!

Bonus points for a wide variety of gender/race/body-types represented in the trailer.

(Also the space-ship still in the video above...totally looks like "Season one of Babylon 5" level of CGI. And that was done on an Amiga).

Why release such a flimsy trailer? If you don't have good content to show why announce anything?

Because they assume if they label something "Firefly" that the die hard fans will come out of the woodwork and start throwing money at them?

They're probably not wrong.

You know, I don't think that Firefly is much of a money maker, regardless of the love out there for it. The series had relatively poor ratings (though Fox is to blame for a lot of that, I'm sure) and Serenity didn't do very well at all. In fact, only through DVD sales did they break even on the film. If the film had done well, there may have been additional movies, but alas, we have comic books instead.

Regardless, I'm taking a "wait and see" approach with this game.

Whatever trickle of money comes from Netflix seems to go on in perpetuity but yeah it's probably not much money.

Well, there IS lots of merchandise out there at the typical geek-focused outlets. That's gotta be pure profit at this point, right?

Some companies still think that they can get all the fans of a small and moderate cultural phenomenon on boards with horrible products. To give some companies credit they are at least trying to find the minimum possible line to get the franchise to print money.

Unfortunately this just looks like Sims in space for me.

It's 'Universe....', not 'verse' ugh
Not sure about the engine, but will definitely follow this one

Firefly Online is a single player game, supported by social features that give you the opportunity to connect with friends and fellow Firefly Online users in new and unique ways. Got a shiny new Callahan rifle that you don’t need? Send it to your friend as a gift. Ship broken down and drifting? Send out a distress call and one of your fellow Browncoats might just tow you to safety. Have an idea for a Firefly story you’re just itching to share? Create a job using your story as a basis and publish it on the Cortex for others in the Verse to enjoy!

For those of you who get a chill whenever you see the word “social”, we’re right there with you. We’re only interested in features that truly enhance the player experience. We’ll be revealing more on exactly what we mean in the months to come.

and..

At launch, Firefly Online will be available for Windows, Mac OS, iOS and Android OS.

I can't wait until I have 15 useless Callahan rifles in my inbox!
