Wargamer's Corner

spelk wrote up a cool post on his blog about wargaming on Android. I hadn't heard of, well, any of these titles, so there's a lot for me to dig into.

As an update to that list of Android titles, Vic has released a new game called Small General: Eastern Front which is derived from his Decisive Campaigns games, rather than the Advanced Tactics series. It looks better, it plays better, and it has more history wrapped up in it. I'm well pleased he's decided to go in this direction on the Android mobile platform.

Whoa! Nice to see.

It looks like Unity of Command is coming to Steam and gets a price dip to $20. Per their Twitters:

Just dropped the price on our website in preparation for Steam. Goodbye $30, you were the best number ever #indiedev

The devs heard back from Steam, you will be able to get a Steam key if you already own the game. They're looking into figuring out how best to do that.

Just a heads up. I did an AAR on a Men of War mission. Technically, it doesn't belong in this thread so here's a link.

Wow, that is super exciting. And here I was contemplating buying it again when the DLC came out.

totally won this by jumping in the PC Gamer Steam chatroom and nabbing a key.

Now to be horribly confused....

Welcome to wargaming. It's a fun learning experience (at least it is for me.)

Big War Games sale over at GreenMan http://www.greenmangaming.com/hot-de...

Coupon code makes things even cheaper. I was thinking about grabbing RUSE (comes out to about $3), and maybe Men of War, I have looked at it about 25 times on Steam and GreenMan and never actually bought it.

Weird thing for me is that the RUSE page doesn't have a buy button. Very strange.

Duh... It's a RUSE!

They know you'd suck at it. Go back to playing tic tac toe.

...

I can't even find RUSE in their store anymore, so maybe they sold out of keys or something.

I read something over at CAG that maybe RUSE sale isn't available in USA....

How did you know? I've been working on a pretty killer build.

Got an email that Steam codes are available for UofC owners who purchased it pre-Steam. They provide a link to a page to enter your original product key. Hooray!

That's good customer service! Looking forward to picking up the expansion.

Shrapnel Games is having a sale. Dominions 3 is $25, if you have not bought it yet. Through Nov 15. If you order more than $50, use code NOVFIFTY for 10% off.

Did everyone get their Unity of Command Steam key? Just head to this page and enter your original key - it will produce the Steam version.

Unrelated, I'm kind of interested a game I saw on the Matrix page - Commander: The Great War is another entry in the underrepresented (IMO) WWI space.

I won UoC from PC Gamer, dang this game is fun, however I have found it basically impossible to perfect any of the missions, at best I get one of the stretch goals on any mission. Are they just really hard to get? Basically I have zero prestige because I can never hit enough objectives to get any.

They're doable, trust me.

In fact, you need to get a decisive victory on some of the scenarios in order get access to all of the scenarios in each campaign. The whole game revolves around concentrating your armored forces and sending them as far as they can along the knife's edge of overstretch in order to get to an objective or encircle enemies. Many times that requires putting them out of supply for a turn or so and alternating air drop supplies to keep the deep penetration movements up.

Commander: Great War looks pretty neat, though I'm always wary of those type of big "you control everything" games. I'm in a bit of a WWI mood after spending most of this weekend playing Twilight in the East, so hopefully the feedback after it comes out will be good.

These giant scope wargames always fascinate me, especially the ones with economic and political elements. It's too bad I won't play them myself; My tolerance for pushing a lot of units around is just too damn low. I'm just going to have to continue living vicariously through others, like you guys in this thread.

That's how I felt but I picked up Unity of Command today and love it. I've only been playing for 4ish hours but it was very easy to grasp the initial concepts and I've been building on them through scenario play since finishing the tutorial. The tutorial was very straight forward and short, which I liked.

My biggest complaint is that it doesn't seem to track your score, so you don't have a benchmark to try and best when/if you replay. I tried to counter that by taking screenshots from the steam overlay, but it seems that isn't working yet. Oh well, Overall it seems like UoC is a great place to wade into the pool

It sounds like development on the Red Turn DLC is coming along, and it sounds like the base game will get a scenario editor so that's cool too. I'd love to see a map editor eventually introduced, but I'm in no hurry.

... and yes, I bought it straight from the dev and then registered my steam key, support the dev and all.

I think he means big games like Twilight, not Unity.

So apparently if you bought UoC from Slitherine, you don't get a Steam key. Can anyone confirm, yea or nay? Thanks!

That's correct. I think you only get a Steam key if you bought direct from 2X2.

Crossposting from the deals thread: the Matrix Holiday Sale goes through January 14th.

Thanks, I don't usually check the deals thread. That's helpful.

Unity of Command AI fail (Race for Rostov scenario):

Note that my supply lines were perfectly safe in the North and East and that the only objective on the map is all the way in the bottom left corner. Pretty weird to see such an obvious blunder like this. That said, the fact that I even find it surprising says a lot about the standard UoC usually sets.

Any recommendations for the guy who's played Unity of Command and not much else?
