%@?*! Zombie Opossums?! I have to tell the others!

I went to an art show today! My girlfriend's brother's wife had a nice display at the Appalachian Arts & Crafts center. I appreciated her interpretation of Buddhist themes in an abstracted layer-matrix or maybe some other stuff I read in her bio. However, I also noticed a bear diorama on display that really caught my eye; it featured small stuffed bears in a multitude of situations. Here was the first one that I saw:

The caption is difficult to read, as I've yet to truly master the camera feature of my cellphone. Pretend that the blurry, crappy shot is really a great, clear one. The caption reads %@?*! Zombie Opossums?! I have to tell the others! The fact that the animal the right is quite obviously not an opossum but most likely an aardvark makes it all the more amusing to me.

Anyway, this little Arts & Crafts center is a bit of a feather in the cap of the local college - a rustic little liberal arts mecca with a collection of local (and not so local) artists that contribute to its ever-growing collection.

Yes, even the faculty housing is quaint and un-assuming! Take a look at that faculty housing. Anyone know what year that old car is?

It's also of note that I found myself making a few video-game comparisons while I was there. I saw one piece that looked a lot like a roller-mine from Half-Life 2, made of glass. I blurted out 'Cool, a roller mine from Half-Life 2 made of glass!' My statement earned a fake cough from a goatee'd dude in a funny hat nearby and a stink-eye from a girl standing next to the glass thing. Maybe she was the artisan who crafted the piece and was offended by my interpretation; more likely she was just jealous I'd vocalized such an erudite observation before she did.

Keep in mind that I spent 50 cents sending these pictures to my email account from my cheap-o cellphone, since it doesn't have a memory card slot to transfer images over to a PC. So, if you respond, please make sure your collective efforts are worth at least fifty cents, to take my mind off of the refreshing soda-beverage I could have purchased for the same amount of money.

Here's a few questions to ask yourself to get started as you travel that road down to half a dollar worth of posting fullfilment:

Have I attended an art show/museum recently?
- If so:
- - Was I escorted out of that show by security?
- - What ratio of 'genuinely inspired' vs. 'crappy hack stuff' did I see there?
- - How many 'artsy' stereotypes did I observe there, and how do I imagine I was categorized by others there?
- If not:
- - Do so, report back!

That looks like a possum to me. Just sayin.

No this is a possum:

Looks more like an armadillo.

Clearly an armadillo:

I hear they taste like rabbit.

Armadillo is pretty gamey, so the rabbit comparison is not too far off. Opossum too, for that matter, but seem to stew better, so it's more difficult to tell.

To answer the OPs question: it's been a long time. My wife went gallery hopping yesterday with a friend, but I just wasn't in the mood, as I suspected that most the work she would be seeing would be of the dense intellectual high concept variety (my guess was right). I think there's no better way to simultaneously learn to appreciate a wide variety of art while becoming totally bored with it then getting an art degree.

I do really want to get out to the Brooklyn Museum to see the Takeshi Murakami show, though. His work is definitely high concept, but also extremely accessible and technically masterful.

Hmmmm, maybe it isn't. It's hard to tell for me. I sit like 3 feet away from my laptop at a high resolution. Picutres are small.

My god, how large is your freaking lap, my friend?

Next time, go for the soda.
