Civilization Revolution

I am really looking forward to this but want to know how the DS version will be more than the 360 version. I have always been more of a SP Civ player so MP doesn't really interest me that much. Plus sitting down for 3-4hours on the 360 I would rather be playing CoD4, H3, or RB. The DS version would be the perfect fit for me so I have high hopes.

Sweet -- very much looking forward to seeing how they've managed the console conversion.

The developers have stated that it uses the same engine and plays identically minus the 3D graphics and Video Civlopedia (Spelling?).

I think it is Civilopedia.

I cannot wait for this. I may have to buy both DS and 360 versions.

I'm a little disappointed it plays exactly the same. I have played the living sh*t out of BTS and get bored pretty quickly with it now. Even small differences in the rules can require a lot of tooling around with strategies.

If only you could transfer gamesaves...

I think he's talking about the difference between the DS and PS3/360 version of Civilization Revolution, not the differences between Civ IV and Civ Rev.

I believe it's a pretty similar game, but with some notable differences to make it quicker paced and more "accessible".

Ya, the console version is supposed to play differently than the PC version. For those that play the PC version I'm not sure there will be a reason for them to play on the console.

Correct, the Console and DS versions share the same engine while the PC is completely different.

I love the PC version and I can think of plenty of reasons for me to play the console version. Game length designed to be around 3 hours would be the first.

Now my heart is going all flippity-flip.

It will be very different than Civ4 or any of the expansions. Each Civ has distinct advantages in each era that are cumulative throughout the game, whereas in Civ4 the traits are (often) more important than the unique unit or unique building of each civilization.

A deep game on the DS ? Has it... has it finally happened ?

Well, I've got it downloading as we speak. I love the fact that I can start a download, tap the power button and know my Xbox will turn itself completely off once the download is finished.

For some reason I thought it wasn't coming out until 2:00 PST! If I knew it would be available this morning I would have fired up the 360 and started the download.

I got it downloaded early this morning before work. I only had a chance to look at the intro and I must say, it looked as good as the PC version, but probably a bit shorter. But stirring and good to look at. I was about to click on 'Single Player' when my hand started to shake, knowing if I gave in to that impulse, I would be late for work (and luckily I wasn't for my student worker was sick and the place wouldn't of gotten open(!). Anyway, can't wait to give it a whirl tonight.

I downloaded it this morning too and will be playing in a few hours. I have to say though, I listened to the first five Civ Rev podcasts on the official website and they got me very excited about the DS version. They are insisting that the DS version will be just a good as the console versions.

Teabagging Cleopatra was almost as exhilarating as expected.

The interface works well, with a few nitpicks.

Workers seem to be gone. Roads can be bought instantly. Research and Gold seem to be swappable resources I think? I like making armies.

Other than that it seems similiar, but I'm no Civ master.

It would be awesome if you could get CIV II running on the DS.

Wait... you can do that?! How did I not know this?

That feature has been around for a while. Maybe two updates ago? You have to enable an option on the system settings blade.

Wasn't finished downloading as I finished Penny Arcade Ep1 last night. Here I am at working, yearning.

The game seems like a very good blend of all the Civ stuff we recognize consoled up and streamlined. They have obviously juggled some familiar stats and timelines to speed the game up, but it seems to hold together well. Hard to say for sure without playing the full version a few times.

Definitely turn off the NPC gibberish in the sound options. Crazy annoying "Sims talk" which smacks of PC developers taking a wild stab at what those "console" kids like every time an advisor pops in. In fact, I'd be okay with not seeing them at all, but there doesn't seem to be an option for that.

I played for a bit last night, and I think Certis hit on the head -- annoying gibberish (thank god there's an option to turn the sound off -- if Okami had that I'd probably still be playing it), but otherwise, it the Civ we know and love, with the UI, controls, and some aspects of the gameplay reinvented for the console. I already have a stack of 360 games to play, though, so I might skip this for now and come back to it when I've played through more stuff.

The DS version, though, will be a day-one purchase if it's anything like a full-blown portable version of Civ. If they nail it, we could be looking at the downfall of Western society.

I just got done playing the demo. i was quite excited to see if they'd pulled it off considering that I've had to give up this sort of game and now I just look at you lot playing Sins and sigh to myself "I used to be a turn based wargamer...."

So initial impressions, the streamlining has definitely taken a toll on the game but not as much as one would think. My two biggest annoyances were the Simlish (agree with Certis) and that I could research far faster than I could actually use the knowledge. Its a bit sacrilegious to Civ but being able to build buildings and units at the same time might help this situation out. Other than that I felt they'd dumbed it down just a bit too much, I felt like I was playing an XBLA game and as far as things go, a game that isn't much more complex than something like Advance Wars or any kind of decent handheld strategy or Carcasonne type deal.

The only thing that makes this a possible 3 hour slog is the map size. On the other hand I do enjoy being able to "Civ" again but this is still like drinking Diet Coke or Nutrasweet. If you've ever had the real thing then this will just leave you feeling not completely satisfied. It also trends things towards conquest a bit too much and you have to drag things out just to win via culture etc.

Are you sure its gibberish? I didn't come across any civs with languages I know but it did sound possible that it could have been Latin, Zulu, ancient Egyptian or Aztec. An internet search didn't come up with anything for the voice acting but I'd be interested know when people run into the more common languages if they are actually speaking gibberish or not.

Its not unprecedented for games to come up with crazy languages, AoE II had Mayan, Mongolian etc.

I hadn't played a Civ game since the first one many years ago on an ancient PC. So, trying out this demo definitely brought back the nostalgia for me. I won a $50 gift card this week at a training class, so I think I know what I'm spending it on.

Trust me, it's gibberish.

Yeah they throw in a token word or two in that language but its mostly gibberish.

Finally got some good time with this. I assume the lack of save is a demo issue. Other than that, I loved it. The simplicity of the game helps a lot in that you no longer have to memorize the civpedia to understand how you're getting beat. The elimination of workers was shocking at first, but it works. Basically, it strips away a ton of micromanagement without stripping away the gameplay elements. I'm wondering if the games take as long now though. Anyways, I'm going to try to put this in the budget now.

I never really got the hang of workers anyway -- in Civ IV etc. I'd just build two or so in each city and set them on auto-improve -- so I definitely approve of eliminating them.
