All Pro Football 2k8 - Season 3 Draft - Tactics, Discussion, etc.

I'm creating this thread so we have a place to discuss the draft without having any other discussion in the draft thread. I think it would be good if the draft thread were clean and for pretty much every post to be a pick. That way we have a clean, easy to read historical record of who did what. Plus we can stop the operation if, say, someone picks 3 Gold players or something like that.

On that note, did you all remember you still have to draft for APF2k8?

I kind of forgot, actually. Jayhawker and I were talking tonight and he kind of reminded me that my wish list of players aside I had to think strategically up and down the levels (Gold to Bronze) about player availability, who would be harder to replace.

My favorite scenario is this.

Which combo do you like better?

Christian Okoye (Bronze) at RB and Ronnie Lott (Gold) at FS
Earl Campbell (Gold) at RB and Fred Marion (Bronze) at FS

It's strange, but I prefer the first combination. I'm not sold on a gold RB being as money in the bank as a gold FS. And Christian Okoye is a better player for his value than Fred Marion, IMHO. So strangely (and I literally had this realization just tonight thanks to Jayhawker) our draft just got a little more interesting because when you think about it there are situations where a Bronze or Silver player is a more prize pick than a Gold.

Anyway, this is the thread to talk draft strategy, what's taken place, etc. That way we keep the original thread just to picks. Although maybe everyone will want to keep strategy to themselves. Either way, have fun.

Here is a pretty good article (of many) over at 2kfootballstrategy.com.

Here is the beginning premise:

Point Spread

In order to understand the balance of the team, we are going to assign a point value to the Gold, Silver, and Bronze players. Gold players are worth 3 points, Silver players are worth 2 points, and Bronze players are worth 1 point.

2x Gold Players x 3 points = 6 points
3x Silver Players x 2 points = 6 points
6x Bronze Players x 1 point = 6 points

With this value system, each tier has 6 points to spend, and there are 18 points in total. A balanced team will have 9 points spent on offense, and 9 points spent on defense. An offensively oriented team will have 10+ points spent on offense, where as a defensively oriented team will have 10+ points spent on defense.

The article goes on to suggest different team builds, and there is another article that discusses building a ball control type of team. Lots of good stuff to take in while deciding who to pick.

It looks like Jayhawker liked one of the strategies as one of the called for Mcdaniel playing safety. Just a guess though

Elliotx may have just broken DSGamer's heart! At least I have another Bronze worshipper picking in the first round with me! I think Okoye is a prize considering he only takes up a Bronze slot.

I wouldn't say that I won't play him at safety, but that is not the plan at this time. It really did hurt to take a freakin' Raider in the first round, though.

Yeah, I was feeling bad about crushing DSGamer's heart but I'm a Bronze lover. I'm debating with myself of an all Bronze first strategy.

Don't start that. Don't you dare start that.

It was one thing to draft Okoye, but that's like the Mutually Assured Destruction of the draft. By merely uttering those words a number of Bronze players just leaped up my draft board. I won't say who, but you may have just started something.

Did I happen to mention how interested I am in Jim Bakken?

I love it. It's like when in real life someone says they love Jeff George and next thing you know Jeff George finds himself a #1 pick. You're planting the seed, Jayhawker. You can't fool me.

I think we may get another pick in here! Frankie is now online with APFB on Live. I suspect he's getting ready to pick Jim Bakken...

I'm afraid of him taking Jim Bakken. Please don't take him, frankie.

Actually, he's probably taking Marino before Ruthless can get to him.

Oh wait, I'm a dim bulb and he already picked him. My draft day war room already sucks.

And here I thought you were making a funny joke. I mean, I laughed really hard when I read that.

No. I was just being dense. Prederick is giving me a hard time about having a board (actually a copy of the spreadsheet) in the thread where he's not supposed to be posting about tactics (hint hint) and meanwhile my war room is completely in the dark as to who was picked this round.

I'll get it together for round 2. At least I got the #1 guy on my board. Let's see if I can stick to the plan.

I thought I read that Ben Coates tore an ACL...

Watch it with the spreading of rooms or else the Commisioner's office may look into allegations that Terry McDaniel used steroids this past offseason.

Ooh, I was really hoping Steve Young would last longer.

Oh man, frankie took Steve Young. My war room is getting a little panicky.

Yeah, I had him pegged down a round or two. Dang dang dang.

Ok, I'm tired of waiting, so i am just going to pick for everyone.

firesloth picks Brian Bosworth!

I really thought Marcus Allen would last longer. I thought DS did such a good job of showcasing how bad he was last season. I was playing around with different style running backs last night, and actually kind of liked Allen.

I have to say that the draft is going pretty well, guys. This has been a nice pace.

It is going at a nice pace. I'm just whining about the "who's next" thing so we can keep going at a good pace. Sorry for being a nag. I guess it's part of the job description.

By the way, the floodgate may be opening on the lower round picks. If you don't want to be stuck with Brian Bosworth, you may want to follow ElliotX and I.

Or don't, and we'll have all the Bronze players to ourselves.

And yeah, I thought Marcus Allen would last longer too. I didn't exactly showcase him last year. But then again, in someone else's hands, he might be great. I just think there are too many running backs to pick one so early. I will wait, personally. My dilemna now (since firesloth blew up my draft board) is who to consider at DB soon and whether that person trumps picking a QB of my choice.

Damn, I dont get to pick for 100 picks!

I don't know. I think those of us in the middle are worst off. We have to wait roughly 10 picks every round. Whereas some of you only have to wait a couple. It kills me to pick, because I have to guess if the next guy I want is going to be gone in the next 10 picks. This is really fun, though. Much like a real draft. Kudos to those of you who pushed for this for so long.

I don't know DS... While I may get two picks out of 4, after that second pick I have to wait 16 players before being able to grab another 2. Not the most exciting prospect

Yeah, waiting for 18 picks has not been a picnic. But it is fun, as I guys come off the board, it narrows my choices. I had a gameplan coming into the draft, but it isad to see how just a few picks, can really alter your strategy, because replacement guys have different skill sets. It's not as easy as just taking the next best guy at the position. That guy might be on another tier, which then alters that tier, and soon it is a domino effect. And we are only only in the 2nd round! I can't imagine all the well laid plans that will be destroyed in the later rounds when the final chinks in your armor are missing from the draft.

That's why I'm going with a strategy of "Pick the essential guys first that could work on any team." I'm going to customize my team in the second half of the draft.

I had no game plan. That strategy will follow me onto the playing field...

Whats a strategy? I just open up the spreadsheet - close my eyes - point at the screen - and thats my pick.

Go Bandits!

I know I started it, but any draft talk should really be in this thread, guys.

I don't want to start with putting time limits in just yet. Some friendly reminders are a good idea, but let's not suck the fun out of this. While I like to think of priorities like work and family as mere distractions, I'd like to give everyone a fair shot at drafting. That means we will have some days that we get stuck. But that will probably be followed by a flurry, as everyone waiting has now spent extra time preparing, and really don't want to be guilty of holding everyone else up.

It's disappointing to have stalled when we did, because we were really rolling pretty good, but I have no doubt that we still get this done sooner than later.

Damn you, Prederick! Lem was next on my list! SO I drop down to another silver oldie, but goodie. Is Bagga still awake?
