Your Favorite Newer Game Music

I agree on its awesomeness!

"Life Is Beautiful" from Deadly Premonition:

I've had the Persona 4 soundtrack on my phone for a while and it gets fairly regular play. I enjoy the span of different genres it touches on.

My three year old daughter is currently obsessed with plants versus zombies. I never noticed how catchy the background music for that game is.

I'd love to use it to replace the godawful hold music for my company's conference call network.

Has it really been three years since I created this thread?

I'd have to agree on the Minecraft music. It's pretty darn good and soothing.

+1 on Mass Effect 2
+1 on World of Goo

It's a little older than new, but I'm a big fan of the Mirror's Edge soundtrack. Solar Fields is a fantastic station on my Pandora for studying.

Another +1 for the Mass Effect music.

Can't believe noone mentioned this yet. Great song, but used absolutely perfectly.

Oblivion - Atmosphere 7

Fallout 3 - Base 4

Heroes of Might and Magic 5 - Haven

I'd also like to throw in a vote for Halo: ODST and Reach. Cliche, I know, but one's good to fall asleep to and the other's good reading music.

The bonus round has fantastic music! Here is a direct link to the song that the composer of the game put in the steam forums. I can loop it for a very long time.

There was this game that I played a couple months back called Coma. While the game was OK for me stayed for the music. Have a listen.

Red Wind

There are others in the game but cant seem to find links.

I really dig a lot of the Eve Online music, I'm at work so I can't pinpoint specific examples at the moment.

Pushing Onwards from VVVVVV, which was good enough that it was almost nominated for Giant Bomb's "game music of 2010," except they dismissed it out of hand because it's 8-bit. Jeff still snuck it in and they had to admit that yeah, pretty damn good.

And here's a gentle piano version, if you're the sensitive type who cares more about flowers and feelings than saving people with V names.

The Hanged Man theme from Dragon Age 2 was surprisingly appropriate without being obtrusive and I liked it quite a lot.

Then we have Jesper Kyd's work, most notably in Assassin's Creed 2/Brotherhood. Some of the best chase music of the last few years:

Then of course there's Morrowind 3: Dragon Screamer.

Viking knows how to scream at a dragon, son.

My only issue with AC2 and Brotherhood is that they didn't utilize "Access the Animus" from AC1, the last few minutes of which are so compulsively sprintable, I took it off my I'm Having a Jog playlist.

I don't think I saw anyone mention Lords of Shadow... I've hardly listened to anything else for a couple of weeks now.

Lost Odyssey is another great Uematsu score, also.

Truth. Love the opening:

P3 is great, as well.

I know the rest of the game was....not so great, but the Final Fantasy XIII soundtrack may be the best complete, cohesive soundtrack I've ever heard in a videogame. Truly Masashi Hamauzu's crowning achievement. I don't know if there's any particular standout track, but it was composed in such a way where a few core themes were referenced over again, adding layers of complexity to the scene that wouldn't otherwise be there, because you're thinking about what that theme represents in light of the new situation — much like a film score. Very, very well-done.

Oh, and this was pretty cool, both for the song and the sheer "WTF factor" at the opening of the game (starts around :40). I never did fully grasp how that worked into the plot.

Callista from ME2 and NFS is awesome:

This. When I walked into that club on Omega and talked with Aria, I lost myself in the atmosphere. That was my first big "whoah" moment with Mass Effect 2.

I never really bring up the Afterlife Club when I discuss ME2 with my friends because I figure they'll give me a funny look, but that is easily one of the most memorable areas of the game for me, largely due to that music. On several occasions, I flew back to Omega to idle in the club while I did my laundry or chatted with a friend online.

Another + 1 for Mass Effect, but specifically the first game. All those lush synths fit perfectly with the retro-futurism vibe. Totally knocked it out of the park.

Felt that the music in ME2 was way more forgettable. The main menu in ME1 still makes hairs stand up on the back of my neck.

Indeed. Great ambient stuff in there. And so evocative of the setting/characters.

If I were to list everything I like, I'd be here until tomorrow. So I'll just throw out the first few things I can think of.

Chrono Cross, Metal Gear Solid series, Super Mario Galaxy games, Super Smash Bros. series, God of War series, LittleBigPlanet series, Katamari series, Shadow of the Colossus and Deadly Premonition.

Suicide Mission - Mass Effect 2

Blue Orb - We Love Katamari

Shinin' - Lumines

I wish I had more examples, but honesty voice acting kind of lowered the prevalence of game music for me. I don't notice it nearly as much anymore. The ME2 track DSgamer posted sounds great, but I played through the game twice and never noticed it.

Generally, I find th emusic for Mass Effect 2 less memorable than Mass Effect 1. The exception is Samara's tune:

The Mass Effect 2 song in context. I definitely remember it. I remember playing the game and thinking to myself that this was the most epic I've ever seen a scripted game.

To a certain degree, I think that's intentional. And it makes total sense for game music: The point of the music isn't to make you sit back and say "Wow, this music is great, I need to stop and listen to it for a bit". It's to make you feel like you are awesome and saving the galaxy.

I agree about Mass Effect 2 vs. Mass Effect 1, btw. I overall preferred Mass Effect 1's soundtrack. It had a pulpy old school Sci-Fi feel to it. I listened to it a lot while I read through The Foundation Series and the Robot Series. It became their unofficial soundtrack to me.

Mass Effect 1 is incredible in evoking that old school sci-fi.

I think ME2 has a few standouts, but I agree with you. ME1 had a fantastic soundtrack.

I'd like to see more of your list. The few you listed are the first ones I would think of (with the exception of Deadly Premonition which I haven't played). I never thought Super Smash Bros. got enough credit for its amazing soundtrack.

Also

That's pretty new, right?

Red Dead Redemption
Shatter
Machinarium
Morrowind/Oblivion
All reside on my ipod.

Quite keen on the Mirror's Edge song and the music from the Deus Ex 3 trailers.
