@ Roguelike games

I gave Brogue a try a while back. It didn't seem to have much complexity going on, but does it ever look good. I'm going to keep trying back as it's been a while. I could never get into Tome, it just seems pointless and formless. Again, it's been a while, so I should try it again. I really like Doom roguelike. It does what it does very very well.

I used to swear by ADOM, but haven't played it in years. ADOM is a game that you can be cruising along and just get one hit criticaled by something you didn't think could possibly kill you. It can be very frustrating, but there's a lot to do and a lot to see for sure. I have a soft spot for ADOM because I started playing it on the first public release and watched it grow.

I'm looking forward to the upcoming X@COM roguelike.

I spent a lot of time on ADOM as well. Apparently, there is an ADOM II out?

I picked up Red Rogue again this weekend, for the first time in roughly a year I think. I've just paused after descending into the first level of Chaos, which is definitely the furthest I've gotten without cheats. The game still isn't in a finished state, but I'm liking the developments that have transpired since my last play session. Among those improvements are

- wall inscriptions give gameplay hints and reinforce the minimal backstory (the player character is the wife of @, who himself has died but has come back to help her as a minion)
- small weapons can be thrown and will be re-equipped into the throw slot when retrieved
- more liberal drop rate of blessed/cursed items
- named uniques on every floor, some of whom have really interesting characteristics
- altars to the RNG
- triggerable mini-quests
- locked gates
- better traps
- can sleep to recover HP (but beware!)

If there are any budding ActionScript coders out there, it's also worth noting that the game is open source on GitHub.

LATER: I am thrilled that I survived as long as I did with ZERO heal runes the whole game. None of the enchanted items I found had heal either. Managed to hang in there for a long time by

Spoiler:

eating undead runes to reincarnate and eating portal runes to use the health stone in the overworld

, plus eating lots of hearts and sleeping in earlier levels... but some kind of healing armor sure would've been swell.

The epitaph isn't in the best format, so I'm extracting the good bits:

Any game that gives me a chance to kill Skrillex is a win in my book.

Well, one of those names was lifted from another source (and belongs to a unique of the appropriate fantasy race), but I totally thought the same thing when I saw Skree and Krellax.

Echo was the only other appropriately-named unique I could identify, but I gather that there's an orc named Grom in WoW.

Oof. The "new" (well, new to me) Abyss in Stone Soup is mean. Got sent there against my will on yet another Troll Necromancer (I'll make it work one day dang it!) and probably spent an hour wandering around aimlessly before finally being brought down by a Cthulhu monster who actually saving me from being drug towards lava by a siren.

Blargh, had my best run ever in Red Rogue but met a showstopper bug. Balrog stopped running away from me but wasn't attacking, so I snuffed him and took Yendor... but apparently he hadn't been running away because there was an inexplicable invisible wall in the middle of the room. No ladders, no teleport runes, and the one item I thought had an unidentified teleport enchantment wasn't activating. No choice but to wear the Balrog's face and succumb to madness.

Got my first ascension in Red Rogue! Granted, it's not as monumental an undertaking as DCSS or one of the old-school roguelikes, but it's still pretty exciting. Ended up with a blessed skull of +heal, +haste, +thorns, +light, +undead, and unknown other enchantments -- plus it was ID'ed for lore bonus -- and wielding a holy staff of +slow, +bleed. Minion had a holy crown of +heal, +thorns, +light and a good enchanted chakram. Tried to kill the Balrog by throwing a bomb at him and he caught it but after catching up to him on the next floor

Spoiler:

I instagibbed him with a holy rune, like a boss .

I think most of you will probably find this game too simple and/or easy in its current state. The standard monsters rarely pose a threat if you're not hasty -- the occasional deaths I have to them are usually from diving too quickly into a pit of critters without enough hearts to eat (although confuse attacks can greatly exacerbate that). Most of my deaths now are from wanting to kill the uniques on every floor before descending, even if they're clearly too difficult for my current condition; they just drop such good equipment! Still, plenty of fun for a dabbler like myself... will advise if the challenge gets a little more significant.

Oh, and also: don't count on the minion behaving sanely. Sometimes he'll run away from you when you need him to lend a hand in a fight, and sometimes he'll develop a minor bloodlust and chase down a unique that's beyond his capacity to fight. What a nincompoop.

It was interesting to read your Zot:1 chat with the other players. I'm also amused about how you leave messages to your self it seems.

I've got a screenshot of the start of Zot:1 that started that conversation. It is... mighty interesting.

Popular opinion was that I should take that shaft down, but I ended up Blink-scrolling to the hallway north of there instead. It took about an hour and a half to resolve the entire combat. There was much portal projectling, hasting, apportating of fired projectiles to portal projectile them again, snowmen making, and various other forms of Troll Necromancer nonsense.

You should sell the rights to that story, I'd watch it!

Wow, that is a fine escape. Glass cannon troll and all. That ghost moth is too scary for words. Just so many ways to die there it's nuts. I think heading for the hallway was the best long term approach. Short term, I think I would have headed to the escape hatch and taken my chances that the RNG couldn't possibly screw me any worse than that. I mean, that is probably worse than landing in the middle of hellion island.

It's buried in the log, but Tiamat was on Zot:2. I never took the shaft, so I don't know if it'd have dumped me where she started, but knowing this game as I do...

Haven't played it yet, but saw a link on a blog to a browser-based Star Wars roguelike:

http://ondras.github.com/star-wars/

Note that the star field background of the main page is procedurally generated.

Red Rogue has reached version 1.0.1 and is no longer playable on the host site -- you can download native executables, compile from source, or download a SWF file to play in your browser locally.

Got my second ascension tonight. Partly due to a distinct lack of werewolves, partly due to an abundance of good runes (including early runes of identify, used to their fullest extent) and strong weapon drops.

After ascending, I rediscovered the hilarity that is accessing the debug menu. Give yourself a crazy practically-instagib weapon, essentially impenetrable armor, slap on a bunch of haste/holy/light/protection runes, and run around the levels like a maniac, plowing through scores of monsters. It's a wonderfully silly way to unwind after being cautious in a real playthrough. Also led me to discover the possibility of a good alternate ending, to see how a particular creature behaves in later levels (I haven't needed to descend far into Chaos for my victories), and to discover that all the defenses you can cheat your way into won't save you from a monster who somehow gets the quickening effect!

Theres a nice tileset available for Brogue, if you don't think the ASCII is fancy enough

Makes a great game a bit more accessible.

Thought I'd get some advice for what to do. I sometimes get this far, then die soon:

I have a bunch of MiFi that die at around this level, so I must be doing something wrong. I just keep charging down and the I die. Though I was smart this time and ran away from a troll. Are there particular branches that I should do or avoid?

The first thing you should do is find a safe place and read all unidentified scrolls. You should be able to id most. Anything you need to try on an item, choose armor first. If it doesn't work it's probably recharging, if it does you have on more AC! Then you should explore carefully to the lair. You also have a weapon decision to make. If you could train up axes to above average speed with that war axe, it's a great weapon against most mid-game stuff. It allows you to bash and then run from big hitters and they'll die while chasing you.

IMO, you're doing great. With the war axe, you should have good damage output for the lair. The falchion will work too with more caution. If you get overpowered in the lair, pop an escape item early rather than too late. Orc priests, Hydras, spiny frogs and mid level uniques are your biggest concern right now.

Your priorities for items should be (in order): poison resist. flaming or non cutting weapon for hydras. recharge that healing wand (great find!)

When you get to the bottom of the lair or stuck because of hydras, the orc mines shouldn't be too dangerous if you're careful. Level 4 is dangerous at best, scary at worst.

How do I figure out how high I need to train the Axe skill?

You never want to be swinging at worse than average speed. Best idea if you don't mind being spoiled slightly is to go to the knowledge bot on crawl.develz.org and type in 'attack delay'.

Sometimes it feels like a waste to train 2 weapon skills. But more often it feels like a waste to die because you didn't use your best weapon.

:/ I really wish orc followers were a little smarter. My very first Orc Warlord got confused next to deep water and promptly went for a permanent swim, less than a minute after he promoted. I quit the character in disgust since one of my branches is Shoals.

Been playing brogue https://sites.google.com/site/brogue... pretty fun so far.

Well the bit I played seems quite simple, really. There is no inventory so risk/reward decisions about what hardware to carry is pretty much the name of the game. It might be a nice change from more in-depth fare. Right now I am mainly struggling with parsing the super-chunky art style. Once I am able to see the forest for the pixels, as it were, I am sure it will click.
