As someone who has never played more than a few levels on any of the online servers, is there anything I need to do or be aware of to play in the tourney? I've always found the offline client to be so much easier to use than the webtiles version. I see all this talk about setting up an rc file but don't even know what that is ... I'm assuming some sort of online configuration?

So to play online for the tourney you have two options, connecting with an SSH/telent client like Putty or using the webtiles version. The standalone executable for for the game does you no good.

Your "rc file" is just an options/settings configuration file. You can use it to set up personal preferences - I've got mine set up the way I like it and copy/paste from one version to the next. The servers use it as a way to identify who is one what team, so you have to add a line of text at the top of the file. The OP has some notes on this.

When you are logged into the servers or using the client there is an "edit rc" option available to you before you start the game.

Edit: As a PSA, I use this Chrome extension to play all the time. I've never had any issues and it runs anywhere Chrome does. I can Crawl on my Chromebook and even get a few turns in over lunch while I'm at work.

Edit edit: I'm pretty stoked that we have enough people for three teams and have hit page 4 before the tournament had even started!

I found this slightly weird last year. A lot of experienced players seem to just kind of take this sort of knowledge for granted. So here's a small pictorial tutorial (this is on CSZO other sites might be different). (Click on image if it is squished into incomprehensibility.)

Go to one of the web tiles sites and log in:

Select "edit rc". Make sure it is for the right version! Tourney this year is using 0.14.

Add your team captain's name as shown - make sure it is the first line in the .rc file!

Hit Save and you are done!

If I messed anything up, I am sure folks will correct me.

Thanks Michael an Tboon for the detailed responses, very helpful!

I just died on D3. Wow. Been a while.

Added myself to the Google doc.

I don't even know what possessed me to click on this thread, glad I did though. Just showed Crawl to a co-worker and he's enthused too.

Creepy!

I saw you had a game running as I was logging out.

That might be the best I've done so far.

I'm not on the same server as my team captain.... do I need to do anything special, or is "TEAMCAPTAIN homard" sufficient?

I had a pretty good run as a MiFi earlier. I made it to D:10. I actually contemplated quaffing a heal before I died, but thought I had enough health to survive at least one more attack. Apparently I was wrong. This was the first time I ran into Nergalle. She smote me

Weird that CZSO just will not connect from home, going to be playing on CBRO for the tournament.

That is fine. You do not need to play on the same server as your clanmates.

Does anyone in my clan have clan name preferences?

Oh, I did a little digging, and discovered that you can play in ANSI mode, too, if you want, using an SSH client. On Windows, Putty is a fairly good free option. On the Mac, I think you can probably just use Terminal, though I haven't tried.

You have to go to the main Crawl page, and download a private key for the server you want to use, and then you can use that to log in and play without needing the busy webtile interface. They provide the key in both Putty and Unix-style format.

You show up just like any Webtile player, which is pretty cool.

Webtile, psh. I only play via a terminal. It is a lot easier to hide at work.

Heh, MrDeVil, I just killed your ghost.

Heh, I hope he put up a fight.

this, many times over

I usually play using screen on my linux box and then connect to that from my phone, my work computer or whatever I have available

To be clear, I'm still watching you. This has nothing to do with the game.

O.O

Awesome sauce. I added a few from the last few tourneys that are in the other thread.

Woohoo! Made it to the 4th Level of the Dungeon, killed my first ghost, and am still alive.

All glory to Kikubaaqudgha!

I'll throw my support towards these suggested team names:

Bed, Bath, and Beogh
Formicidal Tendencies

Edit:

You destroy merphle's ghost!
Your Fighting skill increases to level 4!
Your Short Blades skill increases to level 1!
Your Dodging skill increases to level 3!

Oh yeah.

Damn you merple's ghost!

*waves fist angrily*

I wish I could say I've never died to my own ghost.

Hey, I killed me first! Although... I have died quite a number of times already.

I've got a pretty decent TrMo going right now, though I'm still recovering from having my four main skills drained from 7 down to 0. I've cleared Mines 1-3 and working on Lair 1 now. And of course now that I've mentioned it, I'm sure to be posting a tombstone in the near future.

Clan name suggestion, given the above:
The First Rule is Don't Talk About Crawl Club

The tournament pages are up, and are tracking the clans. So you can see what it will look like:

http://dobrazupa.org/tournament/0.14...

All of this data will reset when the tournament officially starts. I wish they ran monthly tournaments or something, because they're really fun.

Argh, I accidentally destroyed my password. Looks like there's no recovery option, so I'm probably going to have to make a new account.

Or you could create a new account on one of the other servers... but yeah, password management is not this game's strong suit. :/
