Civ IV Beyond the Sword Steam Question

Has anyone owning just the original Civ IV CDs bought Beyond the Sword from Steam? Steam says it will work with the CD version of Civ IV, but I'm curious how installing Civ IV / Beyond the Sword works over Steam and if the disc is required when playing.

I did this with direct2drive without any issues (ie had the box version of civ4 and installed BtS digitally). I do not need the cd to play.

I tried adding my box version civ4 code to Steam and it didn't recongnize the codes. I was wanting to buy BtS from steam if this had worked.

I bought it over steam. As I recall now, I do not need to have the original CDs for CIV IV in the computer (I will confirm when I get home tonight), but I am pretty sure that is accurate.

EDGAR IS RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I own Civ IV on disc and BTS on Steam and it works fine, without the disc in the drive.

What's with the LOL? Inside joke?

How does it know you own the original game when installing? Check your disc, or check your install?

I'M REALLY EXCITED. NO JOKE! I don't remember how it knows I own the original game.

I installed the original Civ4 game, then bought and installed the expansion via Steam. Seems to work just fine now and the disk is not in any way required to play the expansion.

Good enough for me, and a few less discs to track.

Absolutely. I was excited too.

I just wish GameTap came with BTS. I would get that for my Dad, and there would be intra-family multiplayer goodness for all!

That's good to know. I've pestered at least two people into buying Civ4 and one has yet to get BtS.

It's definitely one of my top games this year, even if we don't hype it as much as the flavor of the month titles.

I also installed Steam-BtS on top of CD CivIV with no issues.

BTW/FYI - At a LAN party last week in which we played MP BtS all day, we had one problem with constant SYNC errors (pointing to MY machine as the problem). Google searching through forums indicated that clearing out some BtS cache files would resolve the problem (deleting a bunch of files in a given directory).

This worked fine.

BTW/FYI II: Install the Blue Marble mod/add-on....it is really QUITE nice and works fine with BtS (although it requires a tad bit of fiddling. You have to move the CivIV EXE over to the BtS directory in order to get the Blue Marble program to install).

What is blue marble?

Graphics mod that makes the game look a lot better.

I looked at their Blue Marble screenshots. I can't say it looks all that different.

Disappointingly, this has been changed. Steam now requires you to have purchased the Steam version of Civ IV in order to buy Beyond The Sword on Steam. This really sucks for me as I was just planning on getting into Civ IV again and wanted to download Beyond the Sword. Now I have to go find a retail copy I guess

Wow, that's really really lame.

You can gift games on Steam and Direct 2 Drive you cheap bastard. Show dad some love.
