The Secret World

I've been watching this game for quite a while, but I have zero patience for ARG's. By all means, keep posting what you find here for those of us that want the info without playing the games.

I just wish I had more faith in Funcom's ability to put out a stable and fun to play MMO. I plan to try this when it comes out, but I'm expecting CCP's World of Darkness MMO to be a lot better. (If it ever actually releases.)

Last time i heard anything about WoD was that they werent even starting development until 2012. They've got their 2 overlapping Eve products being worked on now. I'd be excited about that one to depending on how much of the WoD they're going to adapt.

As for Funcoms ability to deliver... I'm optimistically cautious. I think they can do it. The changes they've made to AoC show they've gotten better with their engine and systems. Plus with following the ARG i feel like i'm already playing and invested in the game world already.

I'll definitely give it a shot at least, though I'm maintaining an extremely cautious optimism.

The lore at least looks damned cool.

I like that a good deal of time and energy are being spent on the background/lore.

Growing concensus is Kingsmouth may be TSW version of AoC's Tortage.

Man a bunch of mixed signals now...

They've really been teasing us with beta and that it may be starting in a couple months, but according to their CEO the game wont be released for another 1.5-2 years.

Funcom at its best!

This game looks interesting. I signed up to try and get in the beta.

Unfortunate for patience, but maybe this time they'll make a whole game. Then again, Conan had many delays.

They had just 1 or 2 and they rushed it after that. I'm just hoping its a case of a suit in the office not actually know wtf is going on. I doubt thats the case but it's been known to happen.

Are they self funding this project? I would wonder where their cash is coming in.. I suppose AoC still has a decent player base

I think they are. They actually have 4 projects under development. 1 is the AoC expansion, then Secret World. They're also doing a family friendly f2p mmo thats currently under beta now. Not sure what the 4th one is.

I think their player base for AoC is around the 200-250k mark if i had to guess.

Trailer for Kingsmouth has been released

Interview that came out with the video.

I think the video--or 'found footage'--speaks for itself, but Kingsmouth is a sleepy small town in Maine, on the Atlantic coast of the United States. It's the kind of place where the population doubles during the summer, and off-season it's very quiet and slow. I think the town's official website gives you a good idea of what sort of town it is…before the incident. Something bad is about to happen. Something very, very bad. The video hints at this happening, but the full revelation won't come until we launch the game. There's a major incident, and there are few survivors--and players will be dropped right into the middle of all this. One important theme in The Secret World is that of heroism, and we're going to put players in a situation where being a hero is very difficult: where it's about containing and gathering information, and preventing the darkness from spreading, rather than saving a few lives.
I think the players who spend the time to dig deep--too deep, perhaps--into the lore will really see how far these influences go, and how we've also made them our own. We're much more than wink-wink, nudge-nudge references to Arkham and Dunwich: for us, it's about the look and feel, the themes, the background, the depth and scope of the game universe.

It better be those Dreamfall:Chapters that Tornquist has been promising for some time

Saw that this morning. Looks.....Matrix Online-y, maybe? Maybe it's just the modernity/near-futureness of the setting.

I'm having an increasingly difficult time figuring out how this game is going to work. I'm still interested, just....interested to see how they're going to pull off the tone this needs within an MMO format.

I had the same feeling. I think it has more to do with the fact that your avatar can run around in a full suit or other regular street wear as "armor" along with the modern setting. I will admit, a few months ago I was indifferent on this game but now I'm really looking forward to it. I've heard so many interesting things about it. Solving mysteries, highly customizable avatars that won't be covered up by goofy looking armor, being able to mix and match your skills with 7 active and 7 passive skills available at any time, switching these powers with no hassle so that you can play as a tank one day and a healer the next. I'm getting vibes of Matrix Online, the early days of Star Wars Galaxies, and a few of the good parts of Hellgate London.

Optimistic, was a little worried with all the apparent PR and focus on Kingsmouth, that they had ramped back their plans and that Kingsmouth was the majority of the game; Ragnar's latest interview seems to indicate otherwise; good thing imho.

I believe Kingsmouth will be Secret World's "Tortage". Since that worked really well for AoC, I'm not worried.

My wife is really exicted about this game because she loves urban fantasy. I'm wondering if anyone's thoughts have changed on this title as more information gets put out.

I'm a bit on the fence myself. Some things look good, some things look a bit samey. I'm dubious because of Funcom. I'm really hoping to try a beta out for this game to see if it has potential for the Mrs. and I to switch over to.

I can say this, it is refreshing to see a contemporary MMO. I think I'm getting burnt out on Fantasy. APB looked promising until I played it and found the gameplay to be 'meh'. I like the Lovecraftian vibe of TSW I'm just hoping they can deliver a compelling gameplay to go with the setting.

I'm definitely getting this game unless it suddenly comes to light that the game can explode my computer like the old Cobra virus from GI Joe. I'm a huge Lovecraft fan and anything that even remotely reminds me of the Cthulhu mythos gets my attention.

The game sounds like what I want, but so did Age of Conan. I'm cautious right now but I know what quality Funcom can achieve. Waiting for previews and extended game play videos. Or a closed beta invite. That'd be nice.

This is on top of my list for this year if its still planning on being released. I'm hoping the lack of hype on the game is due to them being cautious where they over hyped AoC.

And the length of marketing. DC is about the same, but I don't feel as burnt out on that title as I was with AoC.

Funcom can achieve quality. The problem is that it takes 1-2 years post-launch for them to achieve it.

I've been pretty much in the same boat for a long time, till I recently got back into playing LOTRO. That being said, I'm still all for contemporary or Sci-fi MMOs.

APB is pretty much on the out now, and Jumpgate:E is still delayed. That pretty much leaves SW:TOR, Secret World, The Agency and DCUO. Maybe Lego Universe as the dark-horse. Of these, I think only DCUO and (maybe?) SW:TOR are confirmed for end of the year.

New video that talks about the starting area for the Templars. Which happens to be London. Some talk about combat too.

I'm becoming increasingly excited about this title but I still have some misgivings about the players having magical powers. Naturally that's just a personal thing. I'd love to see a game like this with "regular" people fighting these otherwordly monsters. Kind of an APB done right but against monsters instead of cops and robbers.

I'm also getting the impression that most of the next round of MMOs are favoring an action heavy style of combat as opposed to the old EQ/WoW models of stand still, click the skill, wait for the refresh, click again. Of course that could just be the editing of all of these teaser trailers I've been watching.

Cool video. I'm excited for a few MMOs, and the only one that I was considering buying day 1 was Star Wars the Old Republic, but after what I saw from Guild Wars 2, I'm not sure anymore.

The Secret World seems very interesting and it looks like it is trying to do something different and I like that. I just hope it all clicks together. I'll be following this one very closely, mostly because I loved Anarchy Online and Ragnar did some good storytelling stuff on his games.

In the mean time, I'll keep playing WAR!
