Rumsfeld flees France fearing arrest

This also makes no mention of an arrest or even authorities. It says he went out the back to avoid "human rights lawyers and journalists" that were camped outside waiting for him.

The whole story seems a bit trumped up. There hasn't been any evidence that an arrest was imminent.

It was on NPR as it was going on Friday that they had charges filed and was waiting for the chance to serve them. The person they were interviewing was waiting for the papers to be served.

So who knows what happened after that.

I'm of the opinion that unless it was French citizens who were tortured (and it very well may have been, I admit I didn't read all the links), then France really has no business arresting him. And even then it's a stretch.

I mean we all hate Rumsfeld and like seeing him get poked in the eye, but this whole 'universal jurisdiction' and 'international law' thing is a very slippery slope. It is something that is very much open to abuse by any nation with a political axe to grind.
