APF2k8 - Legends League S1 - Round 1 Playoffs

Wow, that was crazy. It didn't handle it automatically.

It forced me to choose the final spot between Prederick, Bumpie (Bean) and Kush. All this data can be found online if you're curious.

Anyway, I tried to go by head to head, but during the season the following happened.

Prederick beat Bean
Bean beat Kush
Kush beat Prederick

So going on PF/PA Bean (Bumpie) gets the last playoff spot.

PF/PA

Prederick 167 / 192
Bean 205 / 201
Kush 205 / 211

So by a hair, Bean squeaks into the playoffs. The brackets are set and here are the Week 1 matchups.

Thin J vs. Frankie
Baggachipz vs. DSGamer
Slumberland vs. Grumpicus
Ruthless vs. Bean

Good luck everyone!

Also, looking at it now, Grumpicus got in automatically. Not sure why. Hmm... We'll refine this, I promise guys. Anyway, good luck again.

Damn my functionally incompetent defense!

Frankly, I can't believe we were even in consideration for a spot.

14 teams, 8 playoff teams. You were bound to get some strangeness at the bottom.

Wait, question? Austin Law also had a 3-5 record, I'm kinda curious as to why he gets the 7th spot. Nothing against Grumpicus, and keeping in mind I think all the (3-5) probably feel they don't belong in the playoffs, but I think he should have been included in the tie-breaker.

With that said, the tie-breaker between the 3 of us was done very fairly and I agree with that decision.

Like I said, don't mind not making the playoffs, I definitely didn't deserve it, plus this was the initial league, and I think you did a kick ass job running it, especially with all the issues getting the league off the ground, just curious as to why there wasn't a 4-way tie for the last 2 spots.

Huh?

I wrote something, I then retracted it because I didn't understand something, now I got it I edited that last post.

I think I need to start drinking coffee at work......................or start drinking, one or the other

Shame on everyone else for letting me get into the playoffs. I'd like to thank the Right Bumper button, Natrone Means, and the jiggling cable modem cord (kidding!) for my berth. DS, when can you play? I'm pretty open, for the most part. Weeknights and saturday daytime are pretty good for me.

Kush, if you're mad that you didn't get in I can roll back to the regular season (try to at least) and we can have a two week long discussion over how to break a 4 way tie. I know Grumpics had a lower PF/PA than the other 3 teams. I understand that he has 2 wins and 1 win coming by way of toss a coin forfeit. But when I went to roll the season into the playoffs literally the choice I was given was not to pick 2 teams, but to pick out of you three for the final spot.

After I realized that this had happened yesterday, I started digging to figure out why it happened. I've been banging my head about this all night and eventually I came upon a thread on the 2k message boards warning (and this was in the case of NBA 2k7) that tie-breakers could be decided by team names (including towns) in alphabetical order.

Yeah, you read that correctly. Alphabetical order. So if the same is true for APF2k8, Grumpics possibly got in because his team the "Austin Law". I don't know what to tell you. I didn't have the option as far as I could see to stop everything hand pick the two teams for those final two slots based on a criteria to be determined here. And I know you're thinking that you should be the second team in after Bean. That's probably true. But, once again, I'm trying my best here. The online system for 2k isn't foolproof by a long shot. This is just another example.

In the end, it's hard for me, though, to get too worked up over this. As I've said before, I've tried to Commish the best I know how. If someone thinks they can do better they're welcome to take the mantle next season. But situations like this kill me and I don't know how to handle them perfectly and I try my best given the parameters of the system. That's all I can say.

No no no, definitely not mad, just curious as to why it wasn't a 4-way tie. Like I said, you've done a great job, and if I think I deserve to make the playoffs, I'm in serious denial

That's a damn fine explination, and Bean beat me, so in no way do I think I should make it ahead of him. He just better win it all or I'm lowering my rent

BTW, next season, I think I will write recaps for the New Jersey Knights. Still tweaking that team, hopefully I will fair better next season! Good luck to all in the playoffs.

Honestly, I'm so ready to get started with my next team that I'd give you my spot if I could. And you're right, I don't feel I belong in the playoffs.

This was the case in 2k5 as well... though I'm curious why, if that was also the case with 2k8, it would have you choose for the last slot instead of just grabbing the next team off of the alphabetical list.

I'm going to be the Albuquerque Anteaters next year!!!!! WOOT!!!!!!

To be honest, I had a lot of fun this season, and I too can't wait until we start next year! I vote for maybe adding 2-4 weeks, but with a stricter schedule. 7 days, or a damn good reason to DS.

Oh, and I want a new coin for the coin flip, that little f*ckin coin hates me!!!! LOL.

Good luck everyone!

I appreciate all of that. I was really bummed about this last night. I'm glad all is understood and I'm not in the doghouse.

Kush15 wrote:

Hey, if we can have 4 Earl Campbells or whatever, why not 14 teams from Albuquerque?

The problem is I don't think the season allows more odd intervals like that. I'll double-check tonight, but I believe it's like 8 week season, 16 week season. I'll double check, though. It's been a while since I created the league. Sticking to a stricter schedule would be nice, though.

No idea why it let me choose the last 3 teams. It was definitely weird. Incidentally, one of your wins was a forfeit when you couldn't connect with Frankie. So I was thinking about this last night... Had you played Frankie you might have beaten him by enough points to plant you firmly in the playoffs without needing the Alphanumeric tie-breaker. Unlikely, perhaps, but always possible. So it's one of those flukey things.

I agree with the sentiment that 3-5 is definitely below the maginot line. But given the constraints of the system, what can you do? The problem is if we reduced it to 4 teams a bunch of scrappy 5-3 teams wouldn't be in the playoffs either.

So hopefully next season we can rope in more people, expand the season but make it snappier and perhaps come up with a better way to break ties. It might be worth jumping off to a separate thread to talk about some of this stuff, hash out any issues we have and come to some firm decisions before the next season starts. Especially as the playoffs will soon be over and I know that most of us (even those of us in the playoffs) are excited for a new season, new players, etc.

...tie-breakers could be decided by team names (including towns) in alphabetical order.

Can I have my team in a town whose name begins in 0 (i.e., zero)? I need all the help I can get.

Oh, and you folks should fear my new team. You'll quake in your boots when it's unveiled. But, then you'll play me and find that, well, I'm still not that good...

Frankie again? Phooey

Slumberland, when do you want to dismantle my team? Most any night after 9:30c is optimal.

Sir Grumpicus... I'm not quite sure of my schedule yet... maybe tomorrow night? Sunday night? Saturday I am busy.

Same here.

Bean when do you want to play let me know

So yeah, shutout.

Frankie, in a very gracious move, let the time run out rather than murdering my defense for yet another touchdown after I threw either my third or fourth interception.

I forget which.

It started out ok, with him making a great drive for a touchdown and me breaking a few big plays and moving down the field. I got stopped outside of field goal range but still felt like it was a sign I was at least going to do ok again.

Then he ran over my defense all over again and on the following drive completely stuffed Ottis Anderson. And I think that might have been when I threw the first INT.

Great game to frankie. If anyone needs me I'll be in my backyard putting 30.06 rounds through the game disc.

Oh wow!

D. Marino (QB) 37.5 - rating 3/7 for 66 yards, 42.9%, 0 TDs, 3 INTs, 2 sacks

Wow. Ummm... Please don't put holes in your disc. We need you next season.

DSGamer wrote:

I realized shortly after typing it that I'd only actually get to shoot it once and it would explode into about a million little plastic shards. I've been trying to devise a better method of destruction ever since.

Right now I'm leaning towards fire. Or maybe the old Microwave in the parts room at work.

I'll be around all weekend. If you have a time that works best, let me know and I'll do my best to accomodate. As of right now, I have nothing planned that I couldnt squeeze in a game of All Pro 2k8 around.

Tonight should work out if that's open for you. If not, Sunday night looks pretty open as well.

Still not sure, grump... it sort of depends on what time my better half decides to go to sleep. Sunday might be a better bet, as I can actually schedule something then. Can we play it by ear for tonight, but have Sunday as a fall-back?

it sort of depends on what time my better half decides to go to sleep.

9:30c is, as a general rule, the earliest I can get on... but I can go just about anytime between then and 1am or so. Should I keep an eye out for you?

Definitely.

Ruthless beat me, but I attempted to give him a run for his money. I even paid the refs off (that was the worst call I had ever seen, sorry Ruthless, at least it didnt cost you the game). Good luck to all teams remaining in the playoffs.
