New Radiohead Album

Radiohead, the kings nerdy, boring, tuneless rock music, are on top of the world. They've proven time and time again that they can piss directly into your open mouths, and you'll frolic and gargle in the yellow stream like God himself was giving you a nectar-bath. Loathsome pseudo-intellectual college boys used to have ponytails; now they have Radiohead. God help you, you stupid, gullible infants.

That reads like a sad imitation of old Maddox rants.

I just paid 20 pounds for the preorder download. For two reasons.

1: I don't care who hates what, by play-hours, these guys have a larger than normal shelf allocation in my listening head.
2: I want to reward them with what I can afford. $40 is my music allowance for the month. So that's it for October pretty much.

I think reacting immediately and positively to things we support is important. It's for this reason I swamped itunes+ when it came out with a backlog of stuff I'd wanted but refused to buy through the store because my freaking Treo won't play protected AAC files. It's the same reason I went ahead and bought Year Zero even though I had most of the tracks of the net (legitimately) for free, and didn't think it was anywhere NEAR there best work.

I also have high hopes that, having NO clue whats on this album, it surprises me.

Hasn't Reznor has been railing against his label for taking advantage of fans' willingness to pay more for his music? If this wasn't voluntary, I'd be seriously perturbed at you, rabbit. I'm still marginally annoyed.

I'm planning on buying the album for $10, the amount all albums should be at(excluding collections/special editions).

I wouldn't say my attachment is completely to Radiohead as guitar-driven rock, although that's certainly a part of it. OK Computer relied on guitar far less than The Bends, but was a superior album. I think my main problem--aside from the fact that I simply don't like ambient, electronica, and so forth--is that it's not like Radiohead is reinventing or even reinvigorating these genres.

I'm not sure how much I'd characterize Radiohead as terribly invigorating anything. I don't dislike the style per se, but "guitar-driven" seems to be a misnomer in that it implies that their music is indeed driven, and not merely a passenger floating down a steady creek.

Also, I don't see that anyone's mentioned that Harvey Danger did something similar to this a couple years ago with their album Little by Little. Just thought I'd add that.

With the lower cost of distribution and lower cost of creation (professional sound equipment and mixing is sooo much cheaper than it used to be), I'm gonna put the worth of an average album at $5.

No one's mentioned it because Harvey Danger never had the kind of mindshare Radiohead has. And that's what's wrong with the world.

I'm with Rabbit, I have no problem paying $20 directly to the band for their album. Screw the companies.

I like the pluck of this Demiurge guy. Let's let him stick around, guys.

I don't think he's real. I was supposed to see him twice at PAX and he mysteriously didn't show up!

Man, you guys are full of piss and vinegar.

I'm a sucker for Radiohead. I bought the discbox. I have no use for the vinyl, outside of the collectible value, but I'm all for supporting Radiohead. Plus I get the download version as well. Whoot!

Beyond being voluntary, Radiohead is no longer attached to a major label. This will be their first independent album.

Sounds like time for a bio break.

Given that bands make the majority of their money from touring and merchandising, it's not too surprising to see many of them interested in using broadband to deliver their music directly to fans. British rockers Radiohead tomorrow will release their new album In Rainbows, and have e-mailed customers to note that the tracks will be in MP3 format and DRM free. From the e-mail:
YOUR UNIQUE ACTIVATION CODE(S) WILL BE SENT OUT TOMORROW MORNING (UK TIME). THIS WILL TAKE YOU STRAIGHT TO THE DOWNLOAD AREA.

HERE IS SOME INFORMATION ABOUT THE DOWNLOAD:

THE ALBUM WILL COME AS A 48.4MB ZIP FILE CONTAINING 10 X 160KBPS DRM FREE MP3s.
Were this an industry label release scheduled for tomorrow, these tracks would already be leaked and available on BitTorrent trackers. Of course Radiohead has subsequently stated that they may still rely on labels (possibly EMI?) for CD distribution, which would simply make this an experiment -- albeit an experiment other bands are interested in copying.

That's pretty crappy quality. Guess I'll wait.

I think most people will still pay 'the average' price for the album, perhaps a bit less.

By the way, this is what a pound sign looks like:

£

Look at Pablo Honey. When Creep took off, they didn't follow it up with an album of sound-alikes, they instead wrote an album about how awful it was to be expected to write an album full of Creep sound-alikes, particularly the track My Iron Lung. When The Bends then became the definative alternative rock album, they followed it up with an album which, musically, was almost a complete departure. When OK Computer took over for The Bends as the album, they came out with Kid A. When everyone figured they'd finally settled on a direction, they stepped back a bit with Hail To The Thief.

Reactions to reactions to reactions to reactions. Inevitably, they've suffered for it. Radiohead is a stagnant band.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

So, I'm by no means an audiophile - I love music, but I don't think I have the worlds most perceptive ear. Too many years standing in front of the Marshalls. But while I would have thought that they'd have matched the 256k from itunes plus, I wouldn't call it "crappy." Most folks, I think, consider 128 the "standard."

I know I know, its craptacular, and I've had friends try and prove it to me, but with very few exceptions I can't hear the difference until you get under 128.

I run all my mp3s at 160kbps. I guess too many years of mowing lawns with Metallica blasting through 'over the ear' headphones has ruined my ability to distinguish quality differences above 160...

This album comes out on a Wednesday? Seeing the thread bounce got me excited about the download for a minute (after a long vacation weekend)....

I can't find that key on my keyboard...

Yeah, I checked a conversion chart and 1 UK pound = .50 US dollars.

I did a preorder for 5 pounds ($10) and got an email saying I'd get a follow-up email with a direct link to download at 12am, Oct. 10th (UK time)...That's what, 6am EST?

I can't wait.

Radiohead is easily my favorite "still active" band.

I lived in Denver for a few years not long ago and my first Red Rocks concert was their Hail To The Thief tour. I was damn giddy as a school-girl!

On my keyboard it's on the top row of numbers, 3 key.

Says something that American keyboards don't have a £ sign, doesn't it?

12AM is 6PM EST, I believe.

I'm laying down 10$ for it but c'mon, The Bends is their bestest album.

Aaron D. wrote:

Backwards. 1 UK pound = 2 US dollars.

I did a preorder for 5 pounds ($10)

Now that's correct.

Oops, you're right. I wrote it backwards.

Anyway, I dropped 10 clams for it.

That would have been pretty insulting if I only paid $2.50 for the album. Not that it would make a difference technically, but I would have felt pretty bad for short-changing them.

I know I sound like everyone else when I say this, but I think OK Computer is their best album. It's also one of the best albums I've ever heard, up there with Sgt. Pepper.

I'm anxious to read some impressions about this album, to see what this album sounds like in terms of style.

And personally, I think Kid A is their best.

Downloaded it and burned it to a CD this morning. So far so good, but I only listened to a few tracks on the way to work. Initially reminds me of Insomniac. I'll try to post more later.
