Elite Dangerous Catch-All

Nice data Elewis, does power to systems improve anything other than shields?

I've been to nav beacons before but barely anything happens there. Are you just waiting for wanted ships to jump in? I've come across Dropships before too, pulled a wanted one out of supercruise about an hour ago. They're quite powerful but they seem to be less agile than Anacondas, which makes them easy prey for my setup. I don't bother aiming for specific components when fighting them because by the time you knock out the engines and shields and power core the ship will be out of hitpoints anyway.

Not that I'm aware of. Perhaps there are some effects when the capacitor is fully drained??

One would think that there'd be some KWS/Cargo Scanner range/speed of scan bonuses if you had additional pips to SYS. This, currently, does not appear to be the case.

I am intrigued.

I tried out X3: Albion Prelude's controller support a little, but the one thing that I couldn't get to feel right was speed control -- how do you have that mapped?

(X3AP had brake and accelerator buttons like in a driving game, plus a "maintain current speed" button.)

I have RB and LB set as increase/decrease speed. I also have VA commands for 0, 25, 50 and 75% speed both forward and reverse, but don't find I need them often. I don't seem to have any issue dogfighting NPCs, and don't really plan on doing so against another player.

Also keep in mind that the bulletin board missions refresh every, I think, 10 minutes. So, if you dock somewhere, and are about to take a short break, check the bulletin board for missions, then check again when you get back. I've occasionally ended up with 2 x Slave cargo missions doing this, which is an easy 80k, ish. I've even seen these missions show up in Reidquat itself, meaning all you have to do, is accept the mission, go buy the slaves, then hand in the mission, without even leaving the station.

Huh, I had also avoided doing this. I figured that if I took a mission, then took a break, the mission might expire while I was not playing.

These source slaves missions are generally around the 120 - 140 hour mark in terms of expiry, so you've got a few days real time to do them

Just had an interesting visit to an RSS at Back. I arrived, boosted towards the actual site so I could see what was happening. Found a wanted Sidey, so thought I'd hone my aim with a small first target for the day. He went down easy, but had a buddy that opened up on my straight away. A Cobra, but nothing spectacular, but he managed to rid me of my shields pretty quickly - must've been right behind me. Sadly, around that time, the local police decided I needed a good ramming, so busted my canopy. Seconds after that, the cobra ripped my thrusters. So I now have 10 minutes of Oxygen remaining, but absolutely no control over my ship, which is currently moving around 120m/s in... some direction.. while in a never ending vertical flip. Over and over. It feels like I'm in the movie Gravity, and all I can do is watch.

Everyone left me along in this state, too, despite being a sitting duck, so I just watched the counter click down while trying not to get dizzy. That was easily the fastest I've been defeated in any combat so far. Insurance is around 30k, so not terrible.

Your next mission, Tamren, is to find a black hole.

I went and googled "closest black hole to earth" and what I got was V4641 Sagittarii. Only if you go into the game and look up where that is it's 30000LY away from Lave on the OTHER side of the galactic core. There must be a closer one somewhere.

Do you think you can scan them for data or even get near them to begin with without dying?

Pff. When I finally get there, Yurchikhin Port in Geras will never see me again. 1.5 million light seconds? Move out of the sticks, gentlemen.

I killed one the other evening worth something like 156k credits after the KWS, but I was in the zone with Copingsaw, and I believe he had the last hit. Ever since that night last week where Veloxi and I killed like 7-8 of them inside an hour I just have not seen them. Perhaps CD34 is drying up. Any other systems in the area with a few RES with a nearby station?

Ah, so that was you. I scored two big bounties on Anaconda's at CD34-9020 on consecutive days. One was 180k total. Ended up with an extra 100k of bounties to claim from the Empire from using the Kill Warrant Scanner over about two hours of hunting. Last night I spent another hour out there and found nothing but Cobra's. Not sure if it's just luck or if the RES is drying up. I enjoy hunting at CD34-9020 for a couple of reasons: 1) the RES is located right next to Bake Enterprises; 2) Bake is the only station I have found near Lave where you can buy just about anything for outfitting your ship; and 3) There are four different RES so you can always find one in the sunlight and not have worry about dodging asteroids in the dark due to the planet blocking out all the light.

I don't know if I read this on the official forums or in this thread but it bears repeating. If you are hunting USS's you don't have to fly around the system. Just throttle back to zero in SC, and they will spawn right on top of you, usually within 100-200km. All you have to do is point at them and exit SC. So much easier!

Yeah, I saw that in this video about ways to save time.

It's from the same guy that did the shield testing video that ELewis posted earlier. He has a handful of other useful videos.

I've embarked on a personal mission to try and locate the Ringworld from the novels by Larry Niven. Niven has been mentioned as an influence by Braben, so gotta figure it's out there somewhere.
After some quick research, here's what I know:
- The novel puts the location roughly 200 LY "north" of Sol along the galactic axis.
- the star is a G2 or G3 (info varies) yellow dwarf slightly smaller and cooler than Sol
- the Ringworld RPG game (which is apparently considered canon) lists the star as EC-1752 but a search for that in the E:D Galaxy Map came up empty - would've been too easy anyway
- The star is somewhere in the constellation Comae Berenicies (sp)
- the Ringworld would be the only object in the system (besides the star) since all planets and asteroids would've been used in the construction.

I've made my way to an area about 200 LY from Sol. There are several stars in and around this area with Comae Berenice's in the name but no guarantee that the Ringworld will be around one of them. Actually, no guarantee it's even in the game, but at least it's something to work on while doing other missions and exploring.
If anyone has additional info or thoughts, let me know. I imagine Universal Cartographics will pay handsomely for the location.

Here's one. Nifty device. My only real complaints were the cord, and no lateral tracking. The only reason I don't use it anymore is oculus.

Some nice data on shield performance based on rating and size on the official forums.

Additional info on shields. Some guy took the time to reverse engineer a formula to determine shield capacity for a given ship, class, and rating.

A full table of all shield capacities is here.

I've had good luck the past few days with my PS3 eye cam, a DelanClip (http://www.delanengineering.com/) and FaceTrackNoIR (http://facetracknoir.sourceforge.net...). Had to hack the PS3 cam but it's a super solid setup now. Only thing I notice is my head and neck get a bit sore after a few hours of play.

Head trackign is great for docking, fighting and fiddling with the in-cockpit UI panels. The only thing I don't like is the mouse interface on the starport services screens get a little funny if the view shifts. It'd be cool if it'd lock forward when you log into that UI.

I don't have any thoughts except good luck.

Spoiler:

Even if you find the Ringworld system, the Ring might not be there anymore.

The funny thing is that I vaguely remember that plot point, but otherwise don't remember reading that book. I'll have to go dig into my basement book vault to see. I would have read it before I started using Kindle for everything.

If you also find the Puppeteer Fleet, give my regards to the Hindmost.

I took on my first bounty-hunting mission! And the target was an elite Anaconda.

Oops.

Seems like they all are, MB

misplacedbravado wrote:

Oops. :D

Here's the best outfitting explanations for killing anacondas:

This is the best way if you're way out-gunned. Kind of cheesing it, but it should work pretty well.

So after my first couple of missions, I ended up at a port offering up a hunter/killer mission for over 100k.

"Ooh, sounds like fun!"

I go searching for the target, actually track him down, come up on his ship and start blasting him with my two little starter lasers.

"Die die die die die!"

His ship turns around and lights me the f**k up. Shields disappear, hull gets jacked in seconds.

"Sorry sir! My mistake!"

I jump out of there in a hurry.

10/10 would chihuahua-bite a big dog again.

Stopped at a USS on my way to turn in some bounties. There's three Anacondas and an Eagle. One Anaconda is wanted, and the other ships are all Feds. I hang back with my KWS until they drop his shields. Proceed to immobilize him, then come to his blind spot and crush him. Easiest 130k credits I've made so far.

Quick question on the shield cells: Does the class of the cell need to match the class of the shield? Or can I use a class 2 shield cell with a class 4 shield?

Also, I tried the 360 controller but my head is already wired for the HOTAs. I'll find a way to deal with it.

Dat sh*t cray cray, agreed.

Question about the controls in the Galaxy map: is there a way to back out of a system view without automatically going back to the system my character is currently in? I've been checking out already-explored systems on the outer edges of inhabited space looking for systems with Metallic belts and rings, and it's a pain every time you back out of system view to end up having to type a name into the box in the navigation tab to get back to the sector you were checking out.

EDIT HERE: I was informed that if you select the system first, it will stay centered on that system when you back out. I was just hovering over it till the tooltip came up.

I found one that looks like quite the bonanza (about 230 LY from Sol, I presume away from the galactic core) with an easy name to remember if anyone wants to know it BTW. I'm going to put the name in spoiler tags below. Not only does it have a pristine metallic belt but TWO gas giants with metallic rings. There's also an industrial station there that will likely take all the gold/platinum/silver/palladium you can mine, if I don't miss my guess.

Spoiler:

Krangwe

Reset my save today to give a more combat approach a try with the starter ship. So far, a bunch of really boring USSs (how many funeral ships can I find??) and one wanted guy, who netted me a 13k bounty =) This is definitely feeling more fun than long hauling rares.

Out of curiosity, why did you reset your save? Could you have not used your existing money to fund your new objective?

Hadn't really progressed that far yet, but I had sold my starter ship. Figured could get back to where I was pretty easy money wise, and have the safety net of the cheap insurance on the starter. So a reset was easy. If I had been allot farther in, definitely would have just sold my hauler and refitted.

When you get the kill missions (like kill X pirates).. head to the system and maybe check out some USS or nav points.. dumb question... how do you know who are the pirates? I'm assuming the scan doesn't say "PIRATE" on it.

Also, how does one smuggle goods into the big stations? Is there a way to sneak in without being scanned or does the reward pay for the fine and then some?

Pirates will typically scan you and say things like "What treats do you have?" or "Anything of value?" They will sometimes have bounties, but not always.

I had some trouble with this, too. Particularly because the mission was in an anarchy system so no one had bounties. I found that checking the faction of the contacts was useful. For example, faction names like "Something something Mob" or "Something something Gang" tended to be pirates.

I blasted a dude and collected his bounty. That was fun.

Still trying to wrap my head around this game.

I found Niven station on my way to Lave. I forget where exactly but it should be on my galaxy map now right? If so, I'll post what system it resides in once I finish downloading the game to my main machine.

The galaxy map search will also locate stations and planets by name.

Meanwhile, I made the interesting discovery that some stations that are 1,000,000 lightseconds from the nav beacon have large quantities of rare goods that have a very nice payoff. I'm still not sure that the trip was worth it, from an efficiency standpoint, but half a million credits from just those 37 tons was nice.

I did find Niven station while doing my searching in the galaxy map, along with Sagan station in the same system. Some sort of sci-fi writers retirement community, perhaps. I think it's pretty far from my current search area, but might be worth investigating at some point. Thanks, plavonica!
