Happy Hump Day Survey!

Mine would probably all be liability disasters

-Stunt man class where you learn stunts and get to use cool things like that fire suit and jump onto that pad from high places
-Demolition field where you get to blow things up

A trip to outer space and back.

Along the lines of firing a machine gun, the opportunity to throw a live grenade. I know that was one basic training experience that had enough adrenaline pumping through my system to get my leg a shaking. Couldn't pay me enough to be one of the instructors though. As a side note, pulling the pin out is way harder than expected.

Like, physically or psychologically?

I ask because when deployed to Desert Storm I was issued NBC gear sealed in some sort of vinyl or plastic bag. Before any hostilities I tried to tug it open at the slit and it was pretty resistant. I thought it might be difficult to open in short order if I needed the gear quickly, but when that first siren went off it opened *very* easily.

Physically, took a lot more force than I anticipated. Part of that was probably tempered by a healthy fear of dropping the thing.

HAPPY HUMP DAY!! Tuffalobuffalo sent me a bunch of good suggestions, so this one (and probably the next few!) are from him:

What is the most challenging video game moment you've completed?

Killing the insanely difficult flying dude in the original House of the Dead on one quarter.

Figuring out the Voodoo memory manager for Ultima VII on my old 486, back when I was 12.

For me, it has to be completing the speeder bike level in Battletoads without resorting to using a Game Genie:

...although watching it now, it doesn't look all THAT hard. It seemed pretty impossible when I was a kid.

Oh jeez, good call on that. I had sooo many boot disks for various games back in the day. It was actually the first time I really learned to code something because I ended up building a boot screen to pick various configurations. Ahh good times.

I did this on normal and up until this level, which is near the end, not using a gun was actually pretty easy. Then this level happened. Lots of people got stuck on this one, myself included. Took me a couple hours, I think, with breaks to eat something and calm down.

Normally I would just shrug my shoulders over an achievement but I wanted this one.

Sadly it's not that difficult, really, and I could probably list a handful of old games from back in the late 80's, early 90's, but I remember how frustrated I was with this and how glad I was when I got it done. That and I really liked the game, despite its flaws.

Hubris!

It's tough because you have to be perfect. Give it a go, I bet you'll be stupid frustrated after a few tries.

In terms of gameplay, rather than getting a game up and running, I think figuring out the Babel Fish puzzle was my high point (at age.. 8? 9? somewhere around there). I couldn't beat the rest of the game at the time (I didn't realize that I needed to keep all of the tools on me for the last moment of the game), but still, badass

NEVER! I bet I'd be perfect at it! My reflexes haven't dulled at all in the 20ish years since the game came out.

Maybe I should change my answer to: Just about everything in this game.

Honestly, so much time and so many games have passed, I can't even think of just one frustrating moment.

So I'm gonna say playing through Star Ocean: The Last Hope without resorting to murder/suicide.

Probably Sokobond, because it's still pretty fresh, and I'm not very good at that type of game.

Dark Souls tag team of pain, months went by before i finally eked out victory against these two.

Lots of good and unexpected ones already! Mine is actually a very recent one and why I thought about this question the other day. The fourth ending boss of Drakengard 3 took me about 50-75 tries and a few hours.

Spoiler:

It's an action JRPG, but the final boss is just a really difficult rhythm game trolling you. The camera angles make it really difficult, so you have to memorize every rhythm as you go along and die. Lots of eighth to triplet beats and off beat deals that will eff with you later in the song. Finally, you get to the end, the screen goes black, you think you've won, and then there is a final beat you have to hit out of nowhere! It's ridiculous. You can use YouTube to learn the whole thing, but I decided to beat this game on my own, so it was quite difficult. I even brought out a camera and recorded video of my attempts so that I could learn from my failed attempts without having to play the whole thing over again. If you notice from the video, the whole song is about 7 minutes long. You have to get the rhythms perfect for 7 minutes!

Linking the video in case anyone has it in their head to play Drakengard 3 at some point. Seriously watch it, though, if you have no plan on playing it. It's got a really epic song to finish things out. I'm listening to it now, and it's giving me flashbacks.

That looks fun! Recommended?

Oh yes, most definitely! I had lots of fun with it, and loved all the info they gave on the different elements (and how the devs totally trolled us in the extra levels). Just be aware that it starts to get really, really tricky about halfway, two thirds in. Or maybe it's just me.

Probably not. I added it to my wishlist so that I can grab it next Steam sale hopefully.

I don't play video games to be challenged. I have quite enough challenge in my life, thank you very much. When a game starts challenging me, I typically stop playing.

Example: I stopped playing Remember Me after about 8 hours, because the game started throwing invisible enemies at me, and I could not beat them. What twisted bastard thought that invisible enemies were a good idea in a beat-em-up game?

I don't know why, but this boss had my number for hours.

Going back to Battletoads, mine certainly is getting to this boss fight:

Too bad I never did defeat her. But being able to get to her a few times is still an accomplishment.

This is more and more where I'm falling. I save my difficulty for strategy titles while come home and play, oh, Dynasty Warriors.

What about Dynasty Warriors: Empires when you want to turn down the difficulty of your strategy games, too?

I hold most pride in getting the Wraith bonus 20 times in a row in the old Creep Night Pinball game
