Team Fortress 2

My personal favorites were the pyro and the demo man. i didn't get the most kills with the pyro, but oh man he was a master of suppression and chaos.

Oh man I lived in 2 fort 5 for a year, mega team fortress rocked, and my space orb and I were great scouts (spaceorb not so hot for the sniping, but for everything else it rocked).
my other favorites were the engineer (underwater turrets were awesome defensive strategies), or the top of the spiral turret (killed most enemies as they came past).

Oh the joys of being acused of grenade spamming with a single grenade (I saw him come in the front entrance through the grating, so I turned primed a grenade and chucked it off the back wall wall fo the large room that leads to the elevator, bouncing it into him and killing him.

Oh you gotta be kidding me! Don't say stuff like that the younger guys might actually believe you. I got tricked into buying on of these monstrousities. What a spectacularly useless piece of crap!

Ahahahah! You guys actually bought Sporbs! I remember the heady days of Descent 2 and the great Space Orb controversies Sure, you could turn faster but you couldn't aim for sh*t. Minerva was never the same after the Sporb came out.

Sorry, I'm having fond flashbacks

Listen you once you got the hang of it (actually I spy my Sporb sitting on the floor next to me with some other computer parts rigt now) the Sporb was awesome, the sheer freedom of being able to strafe jump off the deck while turning around and pointing the rocket launcher down into the mouth of your own base to nuke the guys that jsut ran in the front door was nearly godlike. In games like Forsaken you could tell those that had the hang of it versus those using the plain old mouse and keyboard especially. Circle strafing was for pansies, real men sphere strafed (short of an auto aiming cheat or a spaceorb it was almost impossible for a mouse, keyboarder to match the sphere strafe)
You could aim fairly well for everything expect the ultra precision sniping. In a medium to close range fight the spaceorb was a godsend, like I've mentioned repeatedly long range not so much.

(Actually I think I have 2 Sporbs arouind here somewhere, I seem to recall having bought the one my brother had off him for a couple bucks (didn't do him much good once he moved, since the computer was mine))

let's put it this way the MTF conc grenades caused your cursor to do an infiniti sign shaped movement that dampened out into stillness when it wore off, with my Spac Orb I could take a conc grenade full on and run the narrow pathways to the elevators at full speed without falling, because I would automatically correct my aiming as I ran without thinking about it. (Boy did that piss people off)

Call me sick/perverse/demented but I've had no particular interest in multiplayer-only games since kicking my (rather nasty) Counter-Strike habit back in 2000. I've always had a soft spot for TFC though, and TF2 is looking like it really could tick all the boxes that made the original mod such a never-fail laugh riot.

As long as I'm still able to play Engy and chuck a mine into a room full with 8 other guys - and have the resultant carnage crash* the server - I'll be a happy rabbit.

* I'm kidding, but it was a very special moment to know that the huge amount of spontaneous death you'd just caused brought a dedicated game server to its knees. I'll see if I can't dig out the screenshot I managed to take, when the kills were simultanously announced and everyone's game instantly locked up.

I'll post more impressions soon, but damn does the game rock.

You have it?

If Spunior posted something positive like that, it must really, really be good!

Nope, but played the hell out of it at the Games Convention together with chrisg.

Can only agree with Spunior. I've played it for about thirty minutes on wednesday, and it might just be the most polished multiplayer title I've ever seen. The cartoon style works incredibly well, the weapons and movement just feel right, and there are a thousand little details that are just enjoyable, such as the 'On the bright side' messages that pop up and name something positive about your performance every time you die. I'll be there on day one, and I never really enjoyed TFC.

Found that snap (was known as MrUnusual back then):

Note the blood and gibs--looks like I had a turret in full effect in there, too. Was quite a mess!

Also note that the game server tick only ever showed four messages on-screen back then, circa 1999. Wow, do I feel old...

The new Soldier model looks cleaner and better than the old one with trenchcoat, imho.

The next in the line of class highlights: The Soldier.

This was posted about 2 pages back. Damn skimmers!

So, why has Valve not released the details on if we can get just Portals, EP2, and Team Fortress via Steam? I don't want to buy another copy of HL2 with the Orange Box. This is probably the only big multiplayer game of the year that I will buy on PC over 360 and I was hoping we would have some details by now.

Check out this interview with Gabe Newell from Game Informer.

GI: So why drop the Black Box for PC owners?

Newell: That was resistance from the retailers. They didn't want more than one SKU. If we were going to do the one SKU, we were going to do the one where we put everything into it rather than making people buy separate stuff. On Steam, obviously, we have a lot more flexibility in terms on how we package stuff.

GI: Will it be available separately on Steam?

Newell: We're going to announce specific stuff. But we're probably going to have a bunch since there are no shelf-space issues on Steam, so we'll have a bunch of different offerings. All the multiplayer products, all the single player products"…So we'll just try to figure out the most popular ways that people will want to buy it.

GI: So do you think that will change before launch?

Newell: We're going to give ourselves the option of changing that before launch, yes.

Thanks for the information.

I hope Gabe knows a 3rd grader could figure this one out.

They just need to announce the steam packages. It helps build more anticipation.

If only this was actually releasing in October....

Newell on Orange Box distribution via Steam. Translation:

Steam is a very flexible platform, and people can pick content of the (Orange) box they actually would like to have. I can't share the details yet, but we'll announce the download options shortly before the release of the Orange Box. There definitely will be several ones: you can buy just the multiplayer games, just the singleplayer games or a mix of both.

I saw the Leipzig video interview with Newell yesterday and he confirmed the release date is 10.10.07 .....my birthday!!

I am beyond excited about this.

Wow, me too.

Nice!

I want to start a new thread/poll about which version people are going to get but we don't have all the details yet. I never double dip but I have never been faced with such a dilemma on 360 vs. PC. Team Fortress Classic takes me back to my multiplayer roots, so PC is my obvious first choice but the 360 is so great online...

What are you guys leaning towards? We should start a poll after all the steam package details are released.

We already have one of those threads.

I'm so double dipping on this it's not funny.

We don't have one yet that details the packages, and that is what we will need with a poll.

Edit: Was thinking about this at lunch and I may just actually double dip for the first time. Hopefully Live will have a demo.

Purely a PC buy for me - shooters and me on the 360 just dont gibe.

I used to feel the same but R6 Vegas, CoD4 beta, Darkness, etc are making me slowly come around. However, the mouse does still feel superior and perfect when aiming. I guess whichever platform most are using is where I will be.

i was the same as well until i forced myself to play RB6 until i got it down. I've now gone from disgustingly bad to slightly above average.

I'll be going for the PC and will try the 360 version with Gamefly.

jmdanny wrote:

That sounds like a good plan.

I have a lot of shooters I'm enjoying on the 360 so I have no problems with the format. I'm actually looking for a current PC shooter to play.

I may hold off for a week or two just to see if there are any huge (not-already obvious) differences between the two, like one version is far buggier than the other or doesn't play well for people who enjoy other shooters on their system of choice.
