APF2k8 - Legends League S1 - Week 5

Good game DS. If you offense plays like that the rest of the season I feel sorry for your opponents.

Thanks. Like I said, no idea why Mark Blake decided to play decent tonight. Just one of those games. I had a generic take it to the house on a kickoff return. I picked off the ball twice (I think I'm the team leader in INTs). I'm not sure there was much you could do tonight. It was fun, though.

I hate to say it, but I imagine any team at 1-4 or below right now is playing the spoiler. I was just looking at the standings to try and suss that out. 8 teams get in. It might be possible to sneak in at 4-4, though, so no reason to give up. Besides, momentum for next season, when we've all learned from our mistakes and we rework our teams.

I'm still trying to decide if next season I abandon Okoye for a workhorse gold RB. But the lure of the passing game is so tempting...

Yeah, I was trying to be the spoiler last night! While it feels like I haven't been doing so well (you know, that 4 game losing streak and all), all but one loss has been by less than one TD. My offense, which has been just bad lately, didn't play too poorly last night. It just took me way to long to make an adjustment to stop Lofton, who was automatic for 10 yards every time. Which is fine, I suppose, when Dwight Clark was averaging 34.7 yards per catch.

Yeah, I'm definitely up for next season. In fact, I want it to start next week! Time to jettison this dog Curt Warner with his feeble 4.4 yards per carry. I hate to say it, but it's almost like Means, O. Andersen, E. Campbell, or perhaps Okoye are must haves in this game. I wonder if there's a website somewhere that allows you to do a draft for this game.

Great game man. I spent all week figuring this would be the end of my happy little streak.

And again, crazy hurry up offense there at the end. Good playin with ya.

Thanks.

Campbell didn't help me last night.

Honestly, with all of the crap I've seen people give (not necessarily here) about using Campbell as the workhorse he's meant to be, I don't use him nearly as much as I should because I fear upsetting my GWJ-mates and getting accused of being cheesy.

I don't think anyone in the league should be considered cheese. Thus the reason why I don't like the idea of a "draft", personally. I think everyone builds their team with a mixture of nostalgia, fandom and pragmatism. Sure, some guys may seem unstoppable. We might end up with the same guys at some positions. But I think it all works itself out in the end. You *can* stop Earl Campbell. I've done it. Last night I could barely stop Barry Sanders, though. Go figure. So I personally wouldn't worry about that.

I'm not actually arguing they're cheese. Hell, the Chargers run (or should) Tomlinson all the time, and that's not cheesy! ...and I guess we've seen he can be stopped.

Just seems like there are some RBs in this game far ahead of their similarly-ranked peers I think my record pretty closely reflects my relative skill level, so I'm not suggesting that this somehow has affected my outcomes. But, I have come to learn that Curt Warner can be a dog! For the record, I think O. Andersen > Curt Warner, though both are silver stars.

Don't get me wrong -- We could just restart this league as soon as it's over with absolutely no changes (well, except starting with injuries off), and I'd be all over it! I'm really enjoying the league. There were two very frustrating games in my losses (one because of the connection and my wife's insistence on chatting with me throughout the game). However, losses like last night, for example...wow, what a great game. That was just kick-*ss fun! I can't wait to lose to...hey, to DS... next week!

To me the idea of the draft is to mix it up a bit, extend those team-making strategies. I started thinking about it again after looking at the leading rusher list (Campbell, Anderson, Means, Campbell, Anderson, Campbell, Anderson are the first seven).

I don't know. I think these things will take care of themselves. I'm toying around with using a bronze QB and a Gold RB next season that isn't Campbell (hint, his nickname is The Juice). So I think people get bored of things, mix it up, I imagine eventually we won't have 6 Cunninghams in the league or whatever it is.

Oooh, ooh, I'm a Cunningham! I think yours doesn't count anymore, though.

So, just a heads-up for next week (whenever we roll over). I'm out of town Sun-Tue. If we're ready for the new week by Saturday night, maybe we could squeeze in a game then, DS.

We're past our usual mid-week (i.e. Wednesday). So basically I need the last two opponents to let me know they're going to play tonight. If they are, I'll roll the season over after they play tonight and everyone can play late tonight/tomorrow night. I should be available Saturday, firesloth.

Kush and I are actually scheduled to play at 10 PM EST tomorrow night. Is that too late?

We've slowly rolled past the week deadline. It's okay by me. At least it's on the schedule. That's the important thing. But if it doesn't get played by Saturday AM I'll have to roll it forward, I think.

Understandable. He and I have both had strange weeks, and if we can't get it played by Saturday AM there's no need to wait to roll forward.

Hey, can we start using the league website to put up write-ups and stuff? Because I see so much hilarious potential for snark/fun there going un-used.

Also, did anyone else realize that the best DB in the league is apparently some Generic on DSGamer's team?

My generics carry me. Definitely. My quarterback is playing gutsy football now and my DBs are a force.

I think we should use that functionality to do write-ups. I've been involved in some interesting games. I love the stats that are coming out of some of these games. Cool stuff.

I need to look at the stats more, but I hope all the top teams aren't just running teams. That would make me wonder with the kind of QB's and WR's we have in this game. Anyway, I agree, I'm having loads of fun, losses or not. I'm just starting to 'get it' in some ways, but I'll never be as hard core as some here.

The issue is, I think, one of the more dominant RBs can get a lot more done than a QB/WR. Moreover, from what i've seen, a lot of people were thinking like me, and were desperately afraid of getting burned for 400 YPG by Dan Marino, and too a Silver or gold DB.

If we start doing write-ups on the League page (which I think is great!), it might be a good idea to link to it from here...just saying that I don't go looking for those things.

My stats don't show it but more than half of my touchdowns only happened because I moved my way down the field with short/medium range passes combined with some decent runs of the 4 and 5 yard variety. Granted I do get some 10+ yard runs, but it's not regular and I do get hit behind the line fairly often.

My drives live or die by the short/medium range passing game. It's just that I'm awful at throwing into the endzone without tossing interceptions so I tend to focus on ramming Ottis in there most of the time.

Is there a way to see how my play calling is split between runs and passes?

Is there a way to see how my play calling is split between runs and passes?

If you go the sortable stats, Team Overall section, the columns PPLY and RATT give you the number of passing and running plays you've called. I think some sacks or QB scrambles may get into RATT?

Yours says 63 pass to 76 runs...wow, close. I'm at 106 v. 69...not so good. Hey, I play from behind! (Please don't take that out of context...)

My initial assumption was incorrect. I see some top teams as pass heavy (like my upcoming opponent Miama Iron Men (Ruthlessmuffin). But as 'fire mentions, many are balanced.

So, looks like Kush and I couldn't get our game played this week. DS, I apologize. I was on at 10 PM, but by the time he came on at 11:30 I was in no shape to be playing a football game. I was barely useful as a meat shield in Gears. So, not sure what the rule is on this, flip a coin?

It seems like flip a coin. Unless you can get it played in the next couple hours before I wake up in earnest (I'm going back to sleep).

When I wake up I promise the coin flip will be as transparent as when the NBA draft lottery takes place.

Anyway, no need to apologize. These things happen. I just want to keep the league rolling forward. I know there are people excited to get to the playoffs and some people excited to be on to next season and some people that just want to play a game again.

I won't be able to play until, oh, about 8:00 PM tonight (watching wife's store all day) so a coin flip it is.
