Eternal Sonata Multiplayer!

The two "new" characters are NPCs from the 360 version. I don't know if you'll be able to use them for a long time because they'd have to add more dialouge and perhaps alter the story a little? The PS3 version is also getting some new events and the ability to change any character's clothes.

I wonder if any of this will hit the XBLM. Doubtful, but if it does at least it'll be free.

I picked this up after work on Friday to keep the partner and I amused this weekend, and we're enjoying it. Haven't done the co-op thing, but we have been playing together -- generally I do the battles and running around, and she tells me how to solve the puzzles (Fort Fermata is a maze I would never have bothered to solve myself) and informs me when I am doing it wrong.

I especially like the interludes telling the story of Chopin's life. The weird pseudo-real storyline involving the real man and having elements of his life reflected in the fantasy world is an interesting way of shoehorning in a bunch of RPG standards

The only thing I'm not keen on is the RPG staple of giving you a roster of characters to pick and choose from. They never seem sufficiently different or the battles tactical enough to require swapping them much, so I never know whether to stick to the three I like (Polka, Frederic, 'Retto) and level faster or whether to keep them all in rotation and level slower. So far I've been rotating and I've killed every boss first time, so I'd guess my levelling pace is okay for the time being.

Enchanted Arms was worth it. I loved that game. Blue Dragon, too.

I was just getting ready to post a thread about my daughter's big discovery of this feature and blackmailing me into re-playing the game because of it and I find out I'm just clueless instead.

Oh well.

Heh, I'm running through again in encore mode for the achievements. It's grind-tastic!

This may be my wife's favorite computer game. We played it co-op on the 360 eons ago - she played the storyline RPG stuff and I helped on the combat. She is a music teacher so loved the theme. She also liked the characters, their spells, the story, and the whole light/dark part of the combat.

Playing Eternal Sonata with her was a wonderful experience.

I have yet to find another game like this one. She didn't like the theme of Tales of Vesperia, unfortunately.

Is there another fantasy ( ie. Magic ) RPG with cute characters that allows some co-op play? It doesn't have to have a music theme like Sonata had.

Thanks,
-BEP

ps. I think we have all the major consoles except for PS1.

I think all of the Tales games have it, if you think she might enjoy one of the others. I can think of a few others that have some co-op elements but probably aren't what you want.

Are any of the Tales games fantasy? Vesperia was the only one I ever saw and tried.

-BEP

Yes, the Tales games are all fantasy. I consider Vesperia fantasy though, so if you don't, you might need to be more specific. They do all have a pretty similar aesthetic so there is, I'll admit, a fair chance that if she didn't like Vesperia she might not like the others.

If you do want to give them a shot, Tales Of Xillia and Tales Of Symphonia (both available on the PS3) are pretty widely well-regarded, although of course everybody has their own tastes. You might try the JRPG thread where you'll get a wider range of opinions (and maybe somebody will know of another cute, co-op friendly RPG I didn't think of).

*SCREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEECH*

My bad, big time. Vesperia isn't the game we tried. The one we tried had timed turn-based system but wasn't real fantasy-oriented. The characters had guns and it was sorta 3rd person. I can't find the name, now, searching on Google.

I'll check out Vesperia and the others. Thanks for setting me straight.

Maybe missing out the fantasy and magic RPG element here (and this may not be entirely relevant), but have you tried Rayman Origins/Legends? Two great games that have cute characters, amazing visuals, co-op play and some amazing music (especially the music levels in Legends!)

I never played Origins, but we do have Legends on the Wii-U and she really did like playing it. We haven't played it in so long I kinda forgot about it.

I was focusing on the RPG game type because of the way we played Sonata. I picked it up used one day on a lark and we started playing it early one Saturday and that's what we did all day. Playing a game all day wasn't new for ME at the time, but HER playing a game from dusk to dawn was an anomaly and frankly a damned cool thing. She was completely drawn into the game, loving the images and even the weird story because of her background.

It came to me on the drive to work this morning: Valkyria Chronicles was the game we tried and didn't work out.

Yeah, the combat on Valkyria is far more tactical. It felt more like and RTS than an RPG to me.

Having true multiplayer in there is quite rare in this genre. However, if you hand the controller back and forth at intervals you might try these:

How about Blue Dragon for cute? I really loved it, and it's got an old-school turn-based combat system with lots of depth if you want to dive.

Wild Arms and Rogue Galaxy might work, if cute extends to more anime-style characters. How about Dissidia? Those are all PS2.

It's more realistic-looking, but if you're in for some deeper drama and storytelling, Lost Odyssey is just magnificent. I could wax rhapsodic on that one for a LONG time. And if you liked the Chopin history, you'll love the story sequences in this one.

Edit - I'm dumb. I can't believe I forgot Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch. That's suggestion number one, actually.
