"HIV Medics" pardoned

Link

Since nobody, but NOBODY tells Bulgaria what is and isn't a crime, six nurses have received pardons after returning from Libya where they had been sentenced to death. Their only crime was loving TOO MUCH. And also intentionally infecting hundreds of Libyan children with HIV for research purposes.

Can't we, as a world, agree that this is heinous enough a crime that not even international politics should come into play in deciding their fates?

Waitaminute... they intentionally infected all those kids?

I've heard as much, though it may have been a coerced confession. The linked article says it was a problem with hospital conditions.

That is what Libya claimed, and why they were sentenced. Most western news I've heard say it was more the conditions, and/or the kids were infected before they treated them.

If Libya says it, it must be true.

Libya is an ally in the GWOT now, remember.

Yep, and the BBC reported last week about the pay-off of the families and talks about debt reduction for Libya from EU members included with this deal.

I'm sure that the truth falls somewhere in between. Like maybe the exposure was caused by the poor conditions, but the medics knew that the blood was probably tainted. Something like that.

The charges were ridiculous. Here is a decent summary. Every foreign body that investigated the case claimed these doctors were utterly blameless - up to and including the conclusion that EVERY ONE of those children had had HIV before these doctors had even entered the city. Their confessions were extracted under torture. The prosecution's main allegation of motive? That they were agents of the CIA testing a new viral weapon on the Libyan population. Nice.

This news is a great way to start my day.

The amount that Libya was originally demanding as ransom just happened to be the exact amount they were forced to pay for blowing up that jet awhile back. (Flight 800, maybe? I'd have to look it up, and I'm lazy.)

It is just ludicrous to think that any group of health professionals would inflict a prolonged death sentence on children. This was a coverup of the poor hospital conditions... when in doubt, blame the damn furriners.

Those people have been in prison -- LIBYAN prison -- for EIGHT YEARS. I feel so bad for them.
