"Gamer Generation" on DHDT

A 2 part documentary titled "Gamer Generation" premiered this week on Discovery HD. I am always curios to see how the mainstream views gamers.

They had a significant bit of commentary by Clive Thompson and others that portrayed gamers as people who just want to get away from their everyday lives. There was a little bit of JT for spice, and a comment by him that actually made me think (I was surprised). The first part of the doc dealt with who gamers are, professional gaming, who is making games (America's Army), and what games do to people (insert JT comment here). Part 2 dealt with online gaming, power leveling, commerce in online games, and in general, I felt, made gamers look nerdy and stupid.

Did anyone else watch? Care to share your thoughts?

Sounds about right.

I believe these are the guys who filmed my team at the Guild Wars World Championship in Taiwan and Germany. The quality was okay and the crew was friendly but they didn't seem too knowledgable on gaming. The producer was a bit of a tool who was trying too hard and not succeeding at being hip.
They did send a copy of the show to each person on our team, so they deserve kudos for that, and they gave us plenty of face time but they were pushing their own agenda and trying to brand us how they wanted, not how we thought of ourselves.

If game journalism (print and online) is still in its early years then gaming on television is still in its infancy and its taking its wobbly first steps.

I saw it. It looked ok. The whole Palestinian kid who just wanted to kill Israeli's with that game Under Siege was pretty f*cked up.

Yeah, that was disturbing. Even more so by the fact that the Syrian government helped finance the development of the game.

In case anyone is curious, here are the videos I was talking about:

DVD1
DVD2
DVD3

They require DivX to play, and as far as I can recall they should be safe for work. They may be beer and nipple-twisting however.
My team is Idiot Savants. I won't spoil any of it but they foreshadow what's going to happen pretty heavily. They didn't record the match commentary live, it was all done after the fact. And if you have any futher questions I could probably talk for a while.
