Box Art

The fact that 2K considers Brian Bosworth to be an All-Pro worries me.

I see Elway, Rice, and Sanders. Boz on the back or something?

They list the roster under the box art.

Oh. There's a lot of guys on that list that you wouldn't think of as All-Stars. It's a cool concept though. Is it too early to start calling dibs for the GWJ league? If not, I call dibs on Roger "the Dodger" Staubach!

I'd just like to tkae this opportunity to point out the the proudest franchise in NFL history, the Chicago Bears, have more hall of famers than any other team.

That said, I don't know if I want Butkus or Singletary more. Also, I am offended by the lack of Bronko Nagurskey.

I call Ickey Woods! Man I hope they animated the Ickey Shuffle, which my Old Man once described as "A bear trying to stomp out a fire."

I really, really hope you can play William "Refrigerator" Perry on offense!

I call Christian Okoyo. I played virtually every season of Tecmo Super Bowl as the Chiefs because of him. I'm so all over this game.

As to the choice of putting in players like the Boz... I think the idea is more that the game has memorable players. Not necessarily all time greats. And the Boz was memorable. Icky Woods and Okoyo don't exactly burn up the all time records, but they're memorable.

Bosworth and Ickey are both players who were GOOD, but injury shortened.

Bosworth is erroneously held up as an example of a "bust". He wasn't. He was a skilled linebacker who had a degenerative condition in his shoulder end his career very quickly. Yes, Bo Jackson ran him over. Most linebackers currently in the Hall of Fame would have fared no better in a 1-on-1 versus Bo.

It's the guys like Yancey Thigpen that catch my eye. You can't have teams of ONLY Hall of Fame guys. You gotta have some role players and backups.

They mostly stuck with the "modern era" of football, and I don't think that's a bad thing.

I would love to see a classic era football game with guys like Nagurski, but it would have to PLAY like classic football. Guys like Nagurski played a game that only passingly resembles modern football.

In that real men played, not TO?

"Bronko Nagurski never had no bye weeks!"

I believe they are going for a sort of tier system for various players. You'll essentially have a given amount of points (or spots per tier available, not sure) and you pick your players. So you can load up on offense or defense stars, or go for a more balanced roster. There's also this:

# ALL-NEW PLAYER ATTRIBUTE SYSTEM - Gone are the 0-100 ratings so common for players in a simulation game. In APF the players have unique attributes that give them specialized skills. There are over a hundred distinct attributes available.

Proposed skills for Dick Butkus: breakin' dudes, inducing feceation, showing up unexpectedly on your TV when you surf the channels.

Announer: "And with that, the Rams are going to take a time out. Wait, what's this? Dick Butkus is in the stands! It looks like he's doing a sitcom!"

There is a video available now. It looks....OK graphically, but I did like the player movements (runner jukes, reciever cuts and so forth that I saw.

Ickey Shuffle!! 1:09!

Damn you, DS!!! I was going to call dibs on Okoye. I had season tickets at Arrowhead, and the Okoye era was my favorite. The Mondasy Night game where he punished the highly favored Buffalo was one of my favorite sporting moments of all time. 36-3, and Okoye hasd 200+ just busting up the gut. freaing amazing night.

I am all over this game as well. It just looks like a blast.

Excellent video!

Yeah, the player textures could use some polish and shine.

But watching the hands of offensive and defensive linemen, actually shoving and jostling instead of kinda sticking to each other.... it made me cry with joy. 2K's vastly superior trench warfare is back, it appears, and that's the heart of a football simulation.

2K's vastly superior trench warfare is back...

Yeah, I'll never forget when I first realized I was rushing through defensive linemen in Madden (360 version) Not going through the line, but actually going through the linemen themselves. My running back would come to a pair of opposing linemen locked together, and just run through the model of the defensive player with no problems.

Here's hoping 2k8 comes together well...the animations look awesome!

It looks alright, I still am holding out alot of hope for it, but I don't know what to expect.

Enough talk, When do's the season start? Time to play a real football game, not that crappy game Ea puts out.

Wow, the date moved up on this. It's now a month away. Anyone know why?

Probably to beat Madden out of the gate?

It's tough not to wonder, though, if they're not rushing it in the process.

That is a concern, given the 2k MLB 06 debacle.

The 1Up.com 1Up Yours Podcast for this week talks about 2K8 (about 23 minutes in). No online leagues, and the hosts of the show basically say buy it with Madden not instead of.

I don't mind pick-up football with buddies and better gameplay. That's fine. It's a little bit of a drag that there are no online leagues, though.

I'll rent this, I liked the Jurrassic 5 song in the trailer.

Yeah. With no licensed teams or current players the best thing the game had going for it was that you could grab some buddies, fantasy draft an online league of famous players and go at it in some great Live football action. With no online leagues, though, it becomes all pick-up games or leagues you manage yourself. i.e. No stat tracking, etc. Huge drag. No wonder they pushed the date up. The price should accordingly be about $20.

HOLD EVERYTHING

I just heard the "no online leagues" part on the podcast too

But this is what the 2K8 site (http://2ksports.com/games/football2k8/) says right on its front page:

2K SPORTS ONLINE - Full league and tournament support, league and schedule customization options.

I think maybe what 1Up Yours meant was the web-based part of the leagues, since that's the part Garnett (I think it was) kept fixating on. It looks like there are still online leagues, but maybe without the wonderful auto-created website section that 2K5 had.

I'm sure there will be a bunch of posts on the 2K8 forum and some clarification very soon, if not already.

I hope that's right and not just an out of date website that doesn't reflect the game that's going to be shipped early now.
