ARMA - Playability Help Question

Hey guys! I've played games like JointOps, OpFlash, and BF2 over the years. But I am really having a problem with ARMA. The movement doesn't seem as fluid (as other games). Its almost like there isn't as much precision or control. Its kinda hard to explain. A few of my friends have played ARMA and made similar comments. But I cannot pin it down or think of a reason/fix. I've tried really hard to get into the game and while I enjoy the way (tactical) it plays, the movement is just killing me. BTW- I play on a laptop (ati mobile radion x600 and athlon 64 4000+ with 1gb ram) and on a pc (nvidia gt6600 on 3gz intel with 1gb ram). So (honestly) is it me? Do I need to tweak something? Or am I just ARMA impaired??

I don't think it's your fault. The game has a very odd system of commands and I think they are rather clunky. The aircraft just don't operate according to any other game I've played and even realistic mods using the BF engines. The control options also suck rather hard. There isn't even a reverse mouse for flight option so you can have flight controls for flying and yet have normal FPS controls for when you are on the ground. I find the order system for troops to be laborious an very time consuming and not intuitive. Considering how fast you can meet your end in this game the amount of time you need to order your squad to do various things means you are in the fire fight that much longer.

In truth I tried the demo for this game was sorely unimpressed with it. I don't mind that the graphics aren't that good because I was hoping it would be a decent military FPS. But the whole thing rather sucked. So I don't think it's you, I think the controls in the game are sorely lacking.

Hey, I know this is an old thread, but do you guys feel that ARMA II: Operation Arrowhead has improved on the series much? I tried the demo and felt the controls to also be somewhat awkward. The lack of a complete tutorial didn't help either.

I'm new to the milsim genre though, but I felt Ghost Recon and the Operation Flashpoint Dragon Rising demo were somewhat more polished than ARMA, though it looks like Op Flashpoint is a more limited mission based game compared to ARMA's huge open world campaign.

I picked up A2:OA and i could've sworn there was tutuorial missions. It was the only way i could figure out how to configure my keyboard.

Without those... it would've taken FOREVER.

ARMA 2 still has the classic BI studios animation awkwardness, but once you've played for a while you tend to forget its there. Supposedly ARMA 3 has a fully reworked animation system, which is great because that's really the only weak point in the series.

Yeah, I downloaded the A2:OA demo from steam and they were only three tutorial missions, basic movement and driving in a hummer and helicopter. Maybe they did this to limit download size, so I'm feeling a bit lost as far in terms of trying to evaluate the game.

But I hope ARMA 3's reworked engine brings some improved helicopter piloting and perhaps destroyable cover.
