the latest GWJ banner ad - mormon.org

Yeah, apparently the little selector button that says make it go away doesn't actually make it go away. Anyway, working on it.

at Pur.

I wonder if they'll be advertising the new Creationism Museum in banner ads next?

So I read this:

Excuse me, I have to go find a copy of Dianetics now.

I keep seeing the mormon one quite frequently. Is Certis truly from Utah and not Canada as he "claims"?

This is becoming one of my favorite threads in a while. Funkenpants journeying across country (as a chicken) to find religion is a great visual. It's the promised land, my friend.

Can one of you drop me the actual link it points to? I don't get it up here in Canada, it will help me filter it out since apparently buttons and check boxes befuddle my bearded associate.

This is the target link, but it's after a redirect of course of some burstnet.com address.

Yeah, keep talking ... just you wait until you tell the check boxes to do something and they rise against you as one in revolution.

Obligatory link to the Penny Arcade strip that this thread made me think of.

You gotta leave that P&C stuff alone. It's like Lord of the Flies in there. I'm scared just thinking about the seriousness of that forum. Hold me, Ely.

wait P&C is the serious forum? uh oh.

oh and um banner ads, we have banner ads?

Electronic Connect F....

Heresy!

There, all fixed. You're safe from those scary Mormons.

Liar.

(they still show up)

The thread that keeps on giving. Funkenpants is heading to Salt Lake as we speak and now this. I'm laughing not out of any prejudice towards Mormons. Quite the opposite. My best friend growing up in Idaho (heavy Mormon country) was LDS and I attended about a half-dozen BYU games. So I'm actually one of the few that doesn't lump them in with Scientologists, etc. I just think this thread is funny.

Could be a cache thing, they are definitely in the no-show list now.

When is the XBLA version of ECF supposed to hit? The version that's on TiVo doesn't support multi player.

Pending certification. But it's gonna be 800 points.

Am I really that scary? I don't even have a wife yet.

You must still be a teenager.

Nope, 26 and a convert.

See no banner ad up there, hence my confusion.

edit better formatting?

On Memorial Day my wife and I were out in front of our house putting the finishing touches on our new flower bed when I spied two bicycles locked up on the nearby street sign (we live on a corner lot). I immediately thought "uh oh, Mormon missionaries".

Sure enough about five minutes later two young men in shirt, tie, and backpack walk down the street and headed for the bikes. Once they noticed us they walked up, introduced themselves, and soon starting talking about if we believed that Joseph Smith could have been God's prophet and asked if they could come inside and talk. Now, I am a Christian but tend to view the belief that the Book of Mormon was a God-inspired work with some trepidation.

Thank goodness my wife is the diplomat in these situations. She graciously declined their offer (far better than I could have), then offered them some lemonade. They accepted and the conversation mostly turned to good natured chit-chat, standing on our front porch talking about where these young men were from, where they attended college, etc. After they finished the lemonade they thanked us, asked if we knew anybody else in our neighborhood who might need to hear their message, then rode off. All in all a rather benign experience with some Mormon missionaries.

That's because they are benign.

Speaking once again as someone who grew up amongst them only... Every religion has its problems, of course. I could list the problems I've seen with the LDS church. They don't differ much, however, from other denominations. And yeah, the missionaries are very friendly. And you'll be surprised, sometimes they actually want to take a break from doing their work. My dad used to have a very cool tactic for dealing with LDS missionaries. When they would come by our house he would explain politely that we already were set in our beliefs (which in the case of most of us meant sometimes Christian leaning towards agnostic), but that if they wanted to come in for a cookie and some juice and talk about BYU football, the world or something else he'd be happy to talk. Most of the time they were very glad to get out of work for just a few minutes and chat about the world, sports, whatever. The life of a missionary isn't fun times. They pay for the venture out of their own pocket for the most part and in return rarely get to talk to family or friends. So honestly some of the most friendly people you'll meet are LDS missionaries who would like someone else to talk to about something other than their faith.

Of course, my experience is that of all religions the LDS tend to be more friendly than most. I spent 18 years growing up amongst them and was never pressured to join the church, always included in their activities like stake dances and church basketball, and my best friend even held a separate secular wedding in large part so that I could be his best man. Of course he was mine when the time came.

Don't worry AnimeJ, Mormons are easy to make fun of; they're the Canada of religions.

I'm sure they wouldn't want one advertising the Southern Baptists or Roman Catholics either.

EDIT: Nosferatu, can you please delete that picture? It's wonking the page for me.

Wonking. It's a technical term.

Oh great. Thanks, Fed.

Hopefully the "purpose of this thread" bit wasn't for me. I said I thought the thread was funny. I was simply letting AnimeJ know that I, for one, had nothing against Mormons. I just thought the banner ad was funny/odd as well. That said, I'm not sure people would have said anything had the ad been for a mainline protestant religion. If it was an ad for the Church of Christ or the Methodists I don't think anyone would have said anything. Just my 2 cents.
