"World of StarCraft" confounds!

EVE, to me, is truly proof that a small studio, on a shoestring budget can put out a high quality game.

With the announcement looming in four days, Blizzard's official site is counting down the history of their games starting with WarCraft onward. Interesting to note that between WoW's release and now is the longest interval between Blizzard games, going on three plus years.

Would be weird if they pulled an Apple. Announce Diablo III and have it show up in stores that day. Having used WoW as a cover to keep their new game all hush-hush. Old-school style, as it were.

That would be amazing beyond belief. I'm pretty sure it would also be rivaling the shortest, or perhaps longest, development cycle ever.

Oh, and there's one other thing that it would be: The first time a Blizzard title DIDN'T slip a launch date.

As Bill Roper said in the GFW podcast ~May 1997 was the release of Starcraft. The game will most definitely be Starcraft considering the 10 year anniversary.

Though Diablo 3 released this week would suit me just fine.

Gah! Stop making me all goosebumpy! I can't take the anxiety enough as it is with finals.

There's no way they could pull that off without somebody leaking it. Any game, really.

That said, it would be infinite coolness.

Hey Wrestle - seems like this is the second time this week that you have posted a rumor as if it was an established fact.

Misleading thread title++

It's not confirmed when the article ends with "We will of course let you know as soon as soon as Blizzard officially confirms the game on May 19."

So boil me in oil for throwing around sensationalist crap that's permeating the scene, so people can actually discuss its merits (or inherent lack thereof). IMAGE(http://img91.imageshack.us/img91/2289/angrymf7.png)

The fact this topic was bound to start an interesting discussion was more important than actual reporter integrity, wouldn't you agree? CVG are appalling when it comes to fact-finding, not to mention that they fabricate huge amounts of info from virtually nothing; GTA4 trailer analysis, anyone?

I've changed the title now anyway, to better reflect how this thread's turned out. And Sinatar's found a nice pic, too:

See with Starcraft 2 ... if it were to actually materialize, I don't want the same game as StarCraft with beefier graphics that put my system to the test. The gameplay needs to be different/unique or better.

I hate to say it, but you can get deeper into this person website and it looks like he makes concept art for a bunch of different things. So that SC2 picture is taken from that and maybe his rendition of what he would like to see. But who knows, maybe he hacked Blizz and ripped there stuff.

But I just can't get over how that new Zerg Artillery piece resembles that bug from Starship Troopers.

Or a blunt variation of a toxic unit from C&C: Generals. The art style is compelling, though.

Is this image a fake or confirmed as a leak from blizzard?

I said it before and I'll say it again: as far as I am concerned, they can Copy/Paste Starcraft: Brood War units and buildings in Warcratft 3 or C&C 3 engine and I would preorder 5 pieces, just for myself.

Anything more than that is pure heaven. Blizzard simply can't fail on Starcraft related game that they actualy finish and send to market. If they could fail on it, they would already. They had fricking ten years to make Starcraft related failure and didn't. Why would they do it now? Nope, it is going to be, as Dave Bowman said, "something wonderful".

Take a look particularly at the new positions for next-gen MMO and also UI technicians. While it's all speculation at this point it may be signs they are working on a new MMO or at least looking to update the engine for WoW.

Since none of the news sites have said anything about this image yet, I'd have to call it a fake for the moment.

The image is a fake and is something an independent whipped up to show the vision of what he hoped Starcraft 2 looked like. Mind you this was years ago. So yes this image is a fake and no it is not a leak unless it was leaked back around 2000 or so. Looks like we have to wait till May 19th for the announcement.

I posted this image months ago. Its a fake.

It was made by one of the artists for that Dinosaur RTS. He was using Mudbox which is a 3d sculpting tool that is one of the premier tools for making normal maps for games.

Did you like WC2 and 3 then? (All RTSes tend to feel about the same to me, so I won't say for myself.)

If it's a new Starcraft I will be hopeful, but not expect anything worth playing.

If it's a Starcraft MMO I will hate Blizzard. Maybe forever.

Interestingly, whilst poking around on the Mudbox website, I came across this image by Fausto de Martini--who happens to work for Blizzard:

That's a great rendering of what looks like a Firebat or at least a Marine. Could be an example of a movie cut scene possibility. Looks cool though.

Edit Add: Looked at his description of that and it says Cosmonaut.

Here is a Marine:

That. Is. Awesome.

I will steal, paint, and kill a goat if it is something unexpected. Like Lost Vikings III.

the countdown is also accessable via Starcraft2.com

I wouldn't read into it too much. That url has been pointing to Blizzard's front page ever since they bought the rights to it years ago.

I bet a delicious cookie that the game will be Starcraft 2. They just released a 1.15 patch for Starcraft 1, which introduces some new features. This is probably done to make it compliant to the new Battle.Net structure which will be shared by Starcraft 2.

So here we are a day away from the biggest nail biting announcement for a game none of us can agree upon being released. To keep this thread going all the way up to the announcement im going to be the first to make a bold prediction. Not based upon anything but gut feeling, i think its gonna be Starcraft Universe, a direct reskinned version of WoW in all its glory with a little extra flavor thrown in.

We are living in a world where MMOs are the cash cow, Blizzard will corner the 2 biggest MMO market possibilities in Fantasy / Sci Fi and all other imitators will crash and burn. When this is announced, alot of other gaming companies currently in production of their own Sci Fi MMOs are gonna say " OH sh*tE WHAT ARE WE GONNA DO NOW?"

The gaming industry is no different than any other money making industry. The goal? Being the best, make more money than your competitors and squash them financially so they can never compete again. This may sound cut throat, but its called big buisness 101.

Ill check back on these forums this weekend to give you all a big ole I TOLD YA SO!

I really am pulling for the Starcraft MMO, it just makes more sence to me for Blizzard to do this. Plus i wanna play it!

It's going to be the long, long awaited sequel to the most kick-ass game ever released on the SNES: Blackthorne!

That prediction has already been made at least twice, Dirty Skimmer

I'm thinking they are going to do a MMO Starcraft 2 as an RTS. Something like a Battlenet on steroids, and possibly a Hellgate like pay structure. So you can play online Starcraft 2 like the old Battle.Net, or you can pay 10-15 bucks a month for significantly improved online play with some form of character concurance in a MMO type universe.

I agree that MMO's are the Cash cow right now, but a direct reskin of WoW is going to pull alot more people AWAY from WoW then draw people who want a SciFi MMO and aren't playing WoW. They have to corner a new MMO market, get people to pay monthly for an RTS. Once they do that...well i think it'll be TKO for another genre's worth of developers (again).

Perhaps it exists afterall?

I really don't think that a Pay-style Battle.net is going to fly. It's been tried before, and failed miserably in the face of direct connections, LANs, and free systems like Bnet.

With MMOs, people are willing to pay because it's something different. It's not your standard fair, as far as PC gaming is concerned, even though Oblivion and Morrowind come fairly close to that. Genres which aren't radically, or even slightly different from those you can already pay online for free just seemed doomed to failure. Planetside strikes me as a fairly good example of this; it did fairly well, but there wasn't really enough there to keep it afloat.
