Any interest in a MLB 2k7 tournament? - Now with correct spelling!

Rock on.

DSGamer, I got your friends request, you're on my list. Any of you guys want to try a game sometime, message me. I'll do the same. I'll warn you now, though, expect me to be like a crack addict once Forza 2 is out. I'll still be game for MLB though, I always love me some good baseball!

I'll be up for some tonight, maybe after the Sox / Yankees game.

Last night was a no/go. Maybe tonight? Be forwarned tho', I'm a complete beginner with this game, so it may not be much of a challenge. I was planning on putting in some practice time with it tonight, but... keep an eye out for me if you are still interested. Hopefully by next week for sure I can at least know something about the game.

We should play then. I just started "practicing" and it's very very sad. I can't hit to save my life so far.

I cannot tonight, perhaps Friday or Sunday nights, though.

FYI, I am 0-7 online games. I should be 1-6 but some pubtard tool stole a game I was winning when with 2 out in the ninth while I was bringing in my closer I exceeded my "pause timer" allotment. He chose to take the win and give me a drop instead of granting me more time. I hate that guy with the passion of a thousand suns.

I would have been 1-6! I could have been a contender!

But yeah, anyways, Friday or Sunday nights.....

Picked this up last night.

I suck. It's probably Scotty Podsednik's fault.

I looked for you, but by the time you got on I'd already played 9 innings and some home run derby and had moved on to GoW (which for some reason I never got an invite too until it was all over and then 'server diconnect' problem).

Anyway, I'm having a devil of a time hitting too. I'm using the 'stick' version. I tried Home Run Derby a few times to see about timing, but that is such a different aspect then in a game, not sure it helps allot, but some I'm sure (and it was just nice to hit some balls:>)

Hopefully we can connect over the weekend and have a pitcher's duel ;>)

Pitcher's duel indeed. I'll be free all weekend, so it's on!

I too went into the Home Run Derby and was very prolific. Not so much when facing sliders, curveballs, etc. Anything other than BP pitches.

Btw, everytime...and I mean everytime! (thru no real fault of my own...i.e. I did do it purposely) I hit a batter my pitcher got thrown out. This happen like 5 times in one game. Geeze.

That's rare, you can usually hit them 1 or maybe 2 times. But if it right after your pitcher gets shelled, then maybe you get tossed.

I have yet another OT midnight shift tonighht but I would really love to play some ball with you guys Sunday night. (My weekends will be all overtime until, well, I don't know, well into the summer...- a good thing but a bad thing.) I can hit OK It is really just a timing thing. In Multiplkayer you need a gentleman's rule about not throwing TOO FAR from the strike zone, or the game bites. But you learn to hit it just takes time.

So - Sunday night Baseball anyone?

Excellent! once we all feel comfortable we have enough for a small tourney!

Dang. So Donan and I played today (which isn't the easiest thing to arrange, FWIW) and in the 8th inning while I was subbing my pitcher I somehow accidentally exited the game. Stupid menus. Still very fun to play, especially with a fellow Goodjer.

Later I played an exhibition game and actually won finally. Two homers. So maybe all is not lost regarding the possibility of having decent games. As far as the game we were playing, it's probably for the best what happened. We were having fun, but scoring was futile. My lone run coming on 3 errors in the infield. He and I were going to have one of those games, I think, where we end up using all our pitchers and the fans go home because the tie can't be broken. Fun stuff all the same, though.

What level are you guys playing on? I play my practice and online games on Pro

I can't say for sure, but probably the lowest one for, at least for me, I was just getting use to the game. The game with DSGamer was fun! We were surprised as any to finally get some hits. I still wasn't sure what all I was doing. DS' got an inside park home run on my constant throwing to the wrong base...it was hilarious. Definitely like to play some more.

As DS' alluded to, getting connected with a friend seemed, at least to our first attempts, klunky as heck. Even tho' you are logged in, and in game, you have to go to the XBox Live menu in game and relog in again. Then in the 'Quick Game' menu, hit 'start' to bring up a option about inviting a Friend (this is stated all wrong in the manual). Anyway, after several aborted attempts we finally got connected.

I've read the forums about 'sliders' and not sure where those are. But I believe that is just for SP.
Also some funky AI about wild pitches and such. But overall, the initial impression for me is fun. I've not played a baseball game in quite awhile (and honestly have kept up with MLB either, except to peruse standings. I know 3 people on my local team, Seattle Mariners: Harmon the coach; Hernandez the rookie pitcher phenom; and of course Ichiro. Don't have a clue about the others (I did several years ago, but as usual, looks like the team has had complete overall of players. Mariners are known as the 'farm team of greats' for other teams: Randy Johnson, Guillen, Ken Griffey (debatable) and etc.

Just don't pick up NBA 2k7, Donan. Contrary to our conversation, I know. I think I might sell it to pick up Halo 2 for when the Halo 3 beta ends.

Too late, but that's o.k. We can hook up on HALO 2 once 3 beta is over. I believe they are still having a 'Zombie Skate' night with 2.

I'll check out NBA just for the heck of it, but will put most my effort into MLB since you have gotten rid of NBA.

Say, I just noticed in this post here that you have changed you Live gamertag, right? It was DSGamer54, but now is as in you sign, 'DSGamer GWJ'. So I guess I'll get rid of the former and send a request for the later.

Last night I played a 12 inning SP game against the Angels, which I won. I had 11 hits, and was robbed by some excellent fielding of a few more. The game was immensly enjoyable. I pitched out of a few jams, was thrown out at the plate one trying to score Manny on a double to right center, and gunned down a few stealers (and was picked off when I started a steal and the pitcher threw behind me once). The best way to learm to hit is to play SP, as the computer has no qualms about throwing unhittable balls. Then when you play against a person with who you have agreed not to throw anything TOO FAR from the strike zone, you will do better. I leave the batter's eye display set to always on.

Last night he was DSgamer54, we exchanged a few messages.

That's kind of where my head is at. Put more effort into MLB and pick up Halo 2 for after the beta, Zombie Skate, etc. Although if you bought it, I might hold onto it at least until we can play a few games.

I don't think you have to do anything special. I actually did the whole thing where you pay to have your gamertag changed. It was purely a pragmatic choice. I'd chosen DSGamer54 because it's my name here with my number in high school basketball appended because apparently DSGamer by itself was already taken. But just yesterday I was thinking about it and it occurred to me that the 54 is completely pointless to everyone but me and even I don't care about it. So I changed it to have the GWJ appended to it so that Goodjers not in my friends' list would know from whence I came in the middle of a game of Halo, etc.

I played a SP game (on Pro, and I believe that is what DS' and I played at) Mariners against the Rangers. I got killed. Still fun. Lot's of cool graphics about ball location for pitching and hitting. Love all the stats. I had some deep hit balls, but always seemed to be pulled in. I had only 2 hits and just couldn't hit the ball. I still can't figure out how they want you to make the hit go opposite field or pull it. Bunting too. Can't seem to get it down the line except if I drag it. My pitching wasn't too good either. Although I pretty much put it where the catcher wanted it. Got allot of points in ratings for hitting the spot for those 'special times' (can't think of the phrase right now). Anyway, still up for some playing in MP, that is for sure.

"Payoff Pitch".

And I got killed in my first games too. As in real ball, practice makes perfect, Donan. I just want to play you before you get good. My self esteem is helped by beating up the new kid.

DS' and I played another game last night. It was fun and we actually got hits and scored(!). I scrapped mine in (and I got on on having the runner advice to home...by accident!:>) I didn't have a clue I was doing that). Whereas DS' longed ball me. It was only 2-2 thru 11 and then we had to quite. But the box score looked 'real' and we felt better about it. Lot's to still learn. Much of what you can do in SP is not available in MP. Most importantly, looking at whatever base has a runner for a pitchout (when you are a pitcher). Usually you hit left trigger to 'look', the press the corresponding button to the base for a throw. Not so in MP and I couldn't easily see it with a quick perusal of the manual. Manual needs a closer read. DS's was doing some cool shift's to his defense and pinch hitting and such.

Maybe it's because I've not played a baseball game for awhile, but I'm mightily impressed with the grahics and animation. How the characters move. The graphical graphs showing you different things (ball zone pitches; ball distribution to the outfield etc.). These appear to just pop up at random. Perhaps there's a way to make them appear at will. But probably not. But still very cool. The 'line-up' card in game is a neat little gimmick too. I wish it stored past games to a file for a short period at least so you can look it over a leisure. But it does track about everything you can think of stat-wise. I'm sure there is lot's more to see once you get the hang of knowing where to look and such.

My only big complaint is the fielder physics / momentum model feels wrong. My infielders have missed grounders because of it, when I have moved them away from the ball or too far past where they need to be to field it.

Yeah, Donan got a few hits off of me this way. For some reason Carlos Delgado hates running in the direction of fly balls.

SwampYankee wrote:

I think this happened to DS' several times, but in the outfield. But he can verify that. It seemed like something funky was going on.

One of my 'weaknesses' is that when I advance a player to a base, to just hit the left button once(!). I have the habit from the old days or something of continually smashing it. So my guys are rounding bases as if there is no tomorrow and I am in deep doo-doo as DS' just puts the glove on them as they pass bye, while he's shaking his head with a smile, *Chuckle*. (of course there are plenty 'basic' things I really need to get down too:>)

Oh, and for the record the score was 3-3. It was very dramatic. Top of the 10th (I believe) and Donan went ahead on his in the park homer. Then I came out with the first batter in the bottom of the 10th and belted a solo shot. We eventually called the game on account of life. Dang life.

Donan and I played an excellent pickup game Sunday afternoon, at Fenway the Sox beat the Mariners 4-2. Donan hit a home run and had a few more scoring opportunites. I think he had 8 hits and a few of hit hitters reached on errors too.

Yep, this was great fun. I had 8 hit's including a solo homer. But Swampy got a more dramatic home run that brought in a couple runs that tied the game or go ahead. He had 14 hits. My reliever really blew the game.(never just me! *Chuckle*) I was so happy to hit the ball more then I had before. But I really wish there was an easier way to take balls!

We both had 1 error 'officially'. But I felt there were more because of the twitchiness of moving the players around as Swampy has mentioned. But he won despite being kind to me on my errant ways of running my base runners or outfielders:>) Plus I was constantly bombarding him with questions:>) And he 'dared' me a few times that sly dog:>) with some hesitation plays.

We noticed a few AI bugs. He had a ground rule double that never go recorded. And a couple other things I don't remember off hand. But overall this is a fun, good looking game. Made only better by playing with a bud(!!). Thanks man. (DS will be biting at the bit now wanting to play. Swampy may be around for a pick up Tuesday and Wednesday if I'm not on DS).

Btw Swampy, what was weird and we remarked on is that when the game ended and went to the post game stat page, it cut out chat link. So we had to go to an 'outside' chat mode to talk about the stats. And you probably saw this too, but when I finally quit that stat page, it gave me a warning that quiting would break our in-game chat link. Weird, huh?

NOTE: Man, I'm loosing it. While on earth was I spelling you name Swampy with two 'e's' at the end. GAM.

Typical, actually. 2k's baseball games have done that for years, just dunping you out of chat when the game ends. It's odd as their hockey and football (RIP) never did that.

The runner stepping off the bag for no reason and getting tagged on 2nd was the other bug. At least it's infrequent. And I'll have to try hitting the right trigger to see if it fixes that. The twitchiness of the infielders bugs me more, but you can adapt to that better as you play more.

While Forza has drawn me in mightily, I still love MLB and play it when I can. I haven't seen you guys on playing, must just be my timing or something, but consider me still as part of the playerbase. If you guys see me on and it's earlier in the evening (I'm usually heading offline by around 10pm central) I'm sure I'd be up for a game.

I keep an eye on the thread here too, so if we get ready for the tourney, I'm still game!
