Penny Arcade eXpo (PAX) 2007

Well then I guess I'll just get wasted and hang with the Goodjers. I'll bring flannel, though. Call it cosplay.

See, that sounds to me like the best possible option.

F*ck grunge, where do I find the shrine to Starbucks?

I kid, I kid! Yes, dinner/drinks and Goojer hang out times work great for me, I mean, that's what I had in mind. The trick will be organizing some times & places beforehand so we'll be able to find each other for hangout time.

There are shrines to Starbucks on just about every streetcorner. They're sort of like Shinto wayshrines rather than big temples.

I'll be working weekends, but you all are invited to come on up to the park. You can get overpriced hamburgers, circle the parking lot trying to find a spot, and it's pretty much guranteed that if you're from out of town and you just came up for the one day to look at the mountain up close it will be raining and socked in.

If my schedule is still the same as last year I should have Tues. and Wed. off. So if there are any goodger going ons in the mid week, I can slide on down.

Where are you again? Ranier?

Yup, Sunrise Ranger Station.

Grunge is a dirty word in this town. Sadly, Emo is not.

Grunge was always a dirty word. That's like saying angry is an unhappy word.

We're actually planning to hit Ranier this trip, so yes, we probably will stop by.

Grunge never made sense anyway. Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains...those bands do not belong in the same category, and they certainly don't belong in a unique new category.

It made perfect sense, but instead of "grunge" it could be called "decent non-top40" music.

My wife informs me that I twice misspelled Rainier and I'd like to apologize for the shame I've brought upon my family. I will now perform seppuku.

I wasn't going to mention it. I misspelled it when I sent in my application.

Only in the eighties... now it's called greatest hits of the 90s.

But...it WAS top 40. And I meant that Nirvana is heavily punk, whereas Pearl Jam is more like big, somewhat hard rock. They were kind of a successor to classic rock, in my mind. Alice in Chains was some kind of metally thing, and Soundgarden was maybe progressive metal or something.

Arise!

Anyone want to regale us PAX n00bs as to some cool stories about what you've done at PAX in the past? I'm in it to meet Goodjers and to hopefully try some cool new games - both video games and board games, card games, maybe even an RPG session.

I think we should definitely plan a get-together, and possibly some kind of game session or something. I really have no idea what goes on at PAX, but it seems like it can't possibly not be fun.

I'm an Enforcer. My jobs have been general nerdherding, and talent support for one of the panel discussion theaters. Which means I get to be the one who does the now traditional emergency run for bottled water and Bawls. I swear some of these guys float out onto the stage.

As far as fun, I'm looking forward to the all-night Tabletop games, all the stuff at the Expo Hall, the Omegathon competition, and some cool panel discussions and performances. The concerts are a blast.

Planning details will be easier once the Events schedule firms up and gets posted to the website.

Is anyone planning to do BYOC gaming? Registration for it is now open. I wasn't planning on it, but if you guys aren't going to be around for hanging out because you plan to be LAN gaming, speak up! If enough people are doing it, I might consider bringing my laptop.

I don't know, a LAN party with a bunch of strangers is not on my list of fun things to do With the GWJ guys it might be fun, but I play games with the GWJ crew all the time. I'm planning on doing stuff I normally can't do ... like sit around a drink. Wait a minute ...

QFMFT

BYOC...hmm...as Pyro rightly points out, random LAN isn't much fun. I went to the first QuakeCon, and it was really no big deal - if you're playing some random across the room, you might as well be playing some random across the internet, really.

That and, my wife is coming and she almost certainly has no interest in a LAN.

What games were you looking to play, Quintin?

I'll say this: the more hangout time I get with Goodjers, the better*.

*that's assuming you all have acceptable personal hygiene. If anyone is like the people I run into at Magic tournaments, I'll ditch in a heartbeat. But I'm sure that's not a problem with our crowd...

Like I said, I wasn't planning on doing the BYOC lan gaming. I was just trying to get a read on your guys' opinions on it.

I've never been much of a board gamer, and my wife couldn't stand that Star Munchkin game (and she'll be with me), but I would really love to try out some non-electronic games with the GWJ crew. I've often thought my wife might enjoy PnP RP'ing if she gave it a shot (she might not feel the same way). The only gaming that she currently embraces is having a DS game that she's working on (Puzzle Quest), although I'm trying to lure her back into WoW.

BTW, Quintin, what PnP game is it that you play?

Guys, just so you know, the Tabletop area does not just contain Pen-and-paper games. There's also a lot of minatures guys, and a metric butt-ton of boardgames of all descriptions.

And if this interests anyone, someone was threatening to put together a Paranoia campaign. I am so in on that if it gels for him.

I'm definitely bringing a bag o games, casual type stuff for gaming over drinks at the bar below the Ace hotel. No worries about that:)

Yeah, I want to try some board games, good wife willing. I really just want to soak the whole thing up, game and geek it up to the max!

Fedaykin98 wrote:

Many different ones. Amongst our weaponry are such diverse elements as...

D&D 3rd Edition
Jovian Chronicles
GURPS Traveller
Heavy Gear
All Flesh Must Be Eaten (zombie RPG)
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Mutants & Masterminds
Star Wars d20
Paranoia
Cinematic Unisystem Fallout (our current campaign, the Fallout setting ported to the Buffy rules)

What game are you, you know, actually playing right now? Like, the one that made you miss BF2 this week.

Oh, that was my other group. I can't even list all the games that group has played, we've tried so many. This week we finished up a short one-short game of Savage Worlds set in the world of Conan.
