Most Iconic Game Sounds/Music

If we're including music, I'd have to nominate Chrono Trigger. Delightful Spekkio was my favorite track.

And remember... while it doesn't sound incredible to modern ears anymore, it was being synthesized on a Super Nintendo. Listen with 1994 ears, and you will be impressed.

"Stay awhile. Stay Forever!"

SE/Quotes:

Tetris: Moving your pieces.
Sega: "SEEEEEEEEGAAAAAA"
Megaman: The sound of a Robot Master's destruction.
Street Fighter: Everything.
Metal Gear Solid: "Snake? Snake?! SNAAAAAAKE!" , "!"
Super Mario Bros: 1up
Resident Evil: "Barry? Where's Barry?" , .... ..... ....... *You found ammo* RAARGH!!!!
Resident Evil 4: ¡Allí está! ¡Mata lo!
Yoshi's Island: Baby Mario crying.
Starcraft: "We require more vespine gas."
Gears of War: Chainsaw!!!!
Punch Out!: Getting knocked down.
Viva Piñata: "Chocolate cash melting in your pocket? I'll take it. I'm not fussy.", "Feeling a little... seedy?! Oh, I don't mean like that! (She just wouldn't SHUT UP.)
GBA/GC: Logo sounds
Legend of Zelda - Ocarina of Time: "HEY! LISTEN!"

Music:

Tetris: Korobeiniki
Sonic the Hedgehog: Water Warning (You're about to f*ckin' drown mix)
PSO: Most of the songs.
PSP: Take Me Out (I blame Sony Marketing)

"Elf shot the food!" and then getting hit by whoever I'm playing with, and the Gauntlet theme song.

All of the songs from Rygar (Nintendo version). I hear them now.

Sounds from Pitfall.

Being chastized by that guy after playing poorly in Fantasy Empires.

Here's two I can contribute that I don't think anyone else has mentioned (correct me if I'm wrong, though):

"Wise fwom your gwave!"
"Welcome to your doom!"

Hmm, reminds me, maybe also Pitfall 2 music on the Atari 2600.

Whenever I hear "video game" and associate it with music or sound fx, I usually think of the NES and then Castlevania. As for the most iconic, I'd say that Pac-man has some of the most reconizable sound effects that are still ripped-off to this day (Subway commercial).

I can't think of any sound effects at the moment, that are out of place in a particular game, though I'm pretty sure I've noticed it before. I probably thought that some sound effect was too loud, too dry, or had too much reverb, so it didn't fit in with the others.

I think one game that should be commended for the quality of it's sound fx at the time and for their affect on the player, is the original Castle Wolfenstein. To this day, the sound of an SS gaurd walking in the room and shouting "SS" scares the bejebus out of me. The jarring sound of your character running into a wall does a great job of putting you on edge, thus making the SS-surprise even more effective.

Here are my two cents:

Sounds:
Resident Evil 4: Detrás de tí, imbécil! - scared me A LOT of times.
Warcraft II: Stop poking me!!! - We used to click the peeps senseless just to hear this line.
Baldur's Gate: "I am become death, the destroyer of worlds" and "Squeaky wheel gets the kick" are stuck in my head forever.
Rollercoaster Tycoon: there were times when I heard the rollercoaster racket and peeps screaming in my sleep.

Music:
I used to install Planescape Torment from time to time just to hear the Deionarra song. Now I have soundtrack. Haunting and beautiful.
"Elevator music" in System Shock was great, laid back and relaxing after running around a level without any bullets and just a bit of health.
"Propaganda" song from Beyond Good and Evil is stuck in my head for several years now. Great stuff.

*) The button pushing and weapon switching sounds from Halflife.

*) Also from HL: "Major fracture detected." (preceded by crunching...followed by flatline beep)

*) HEADSHOT! (Q3:A...or a mod of it, maybe it's from UT?)

*) DENIED! (UT2004)

*) The Mario theme, of course.

Headshot is indeed from UT, so is MOMOMOMOMOMONSTERKILL!

Denied, is as far as I know, originally from Q3.

I think the game was called MegaRacer or something, but it had a announcer shouting:
"Way to go little enforcer!"
At the time, I thought that was just awesome.

That damn dog laughing at me in Duck Hunt. I hate that dog.

Psychonauts has some classic sounds and dialog but I really can't think of any off-hand. Anyone care to chime in?

I just remembered another sound bite that stuck in my head.

"Bigfoot is doing it in the air!" - from Monster Truck Madness

If we're going for lines, rather than sound effects, I've got a couple more:

"Frickin' idiot.... bringin' me out here on a night like this..." -- Voodoo Vince
"Note to self: Never drink the tapwater at Jerry Garcia's." -- Gex 3: Enter the Gecko

Man I loved the music from that game. Especially that one.

Akuda House Propaganda.
Mammago's Garage too.

Collecting arrowheads, the Bluegrass tune that plays throughout the camp area during the early part of the game, the noise the underground transit system makes when it whizzes off. Just to name a few.

(I just started replaying the game last night after a prolonged break. And I intend to complete it this time.)

BuuzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZ... ZAP!

Obelisk of Light, Command & Conquer

GRRRAARAARRRAARGHHH!!

Ogre Mage Bloodlust, Warcraft 2.

Yeah that site is a good one for finding game music. Heh...I play the Mammago theme in my cubical sometimes and I get weird looks and questions from fellow office workers...fun.

Some classic dialog:

"Oh no! The orphanage! Wait a minute, that wasn't the orphanage... it was the PUPPY orphanage! Does his evil know no bounds?"

"Now tell me if this smells like...your doom!"

"I am the Milkman. My milk is delicious."

Great stuff.

This has "Thread of the Week" written all over it.

Don't mind me, I'm just here to gloat.

Oh wait, I forgot a biggie for me: the them music to ToeJam & Earl on the Sega Genesis!! I've always dreamed of going to Funk-itron.

I started playing through Half-Life 2 Episode One yesterday and it occurred to me that the headcrab zombies' moans sound pretty much like Beck did back when he was making crappy lo-fi hip-hop songs in the early '90s. Maybe it's a sample. Or Beck is really zombie Beck.

Almost all the Audio from Zelda games. The theme to the you just got some loot music.

-OMG

I recently started playing that again too and I had forgotten what a great game it is. The voice acting is top notch and good audio throughout.

The "SEGA" at the start up of Sonic is a big one.

Music that still sticks in my head is from Deathtrack. Just that bassy beat at the start (on a pc speaker, then later an adlib card) has been stuck in my head for nearly 20 years now.

Oh and the music from Leisure Suit Larry.

And the music from Doom, shareware edition, level 1. Played that for months and years.

All the menu sound effects fro x-com. Very swooshy and futuristic. Love it!

Finally pac man getting killed on the 2600 bluh-blih-blih-blah. Pure excellent.

The "vine-swing" melody from Pitfall...
Referee Mario's "TKO" from Mike Tyson's Punch Out
arcade pac-man's death rattle
the weird giggle/babble thing when you roll up the punk with the huge pompadour in Katamari Damacy

"Don't let it end like this" - Planescape Torment dead sound.

"Head-shot", "Double-kill", "Flak-Monkey", etc - Unreal Tournament 2004

The "You're in a briefing" music for OgreBattle 64

Definitely the Excitebike opening music. Who could forget that?!?!

The one game song that always pops into my head first is the theme song from Bubble Bobble. I spent hours upon hours upon hours with my buddies trying to beat that damned game! I think we even got to level 100 2 or 3 times, but never did beat it.

Carcasonne would be a close second right now, and not in a good way. I swear the wife plays that game for hours every night.

Hm... maybe these are just songs that got stuck in my head and aren't really 'iconic' in any sense of the word, but screw it, those are my answers!

"Shake, shake!"

"What is a man?! A miserable little pile of secrets!" - Dracula, SOTN

"You ready for me, boy?" - Starcraft

"Hey, this thing's on fire! Better send a SCV over here to fix it! ... He can fix up my bike too, while he's at it." - Starcraft

The first one I remember as a kid, "URRR OOUUT!" robot-like voice from Intelivision Baseball. Then the Mario theme. Of recent years the Halo theme.
