My apologies for attempting to be helpful.

A friend of mine purchased that TV (or an earlier model) a year or so ago.
...
Overall, he's been more than satisfied with the TV, it just seems to have a few minor 'quirks'. Don't forget that he's had his for over a year, so current models may not have some of these features / problems.
Thanks for the info! I went out and got it over the weekend. I haven't had much time to mess with it, but thus far it's been quite nice. If anyone else is interested in the model, Office Depot tells me that they are going to no longer carry it soon. Guess no one goes to Office Depot to buy a TV!
Haha, you live in Kentucky.
You know, Lincoln was smart enough to move to IL.
But I guess look where that got him....
Fine, we don't want you anyway.
If you ever have to come back, let me know and I'll take care of you. I don't mean that in a "Road to Perdition" way. Meantime, get yourself some HDGaming goodness.

I bought the same Viewsonic from Office Depot, but I ended up having to return it. I think I may have just gotten a bum one. Mine wouldn't turn on if it was idle for any period of time; I would have to pull the power cord to reset it (sometimes more than once). It also was really bright/washed out, and there were a few times when the sound wouldn't function correctly (one time it just quit working all of the sudden, another time it started playing at full volume even though it was turned down pretty low). The SD scaler was really horrible as well, but that wasn't really what I bought it for.
Hope it works out better for you, but I'd return it to OD if you have ANY problems in the first 30 days... they just got worse for me. I ended up going with the Olevia 532H, and I think it performs a lot better.
For those planning on (ab)using Costco's liberal return policy: The party's over.
Well I do appreciate the attempt but I would think noticing that Canton MI and Bolingbroke IL are about 4 to 5 hours away might tell one that Atlanta is even farther ;)
If you're closer to Michigan and Illinois than you are to Atlanta, you can stop claiming to live in the Southeast... Yankee.
You've got to drive pretty hard through Indiana if you're going to make it that quick. Wait, are you in Louisville? Can you bring me a bat?
Aw man, that sucks Thin! Is it in the middle or more off to the side?

So...can the better-informed weigh in on this subject? Legion pointed me to this thread after I mentioned I was in the contemplating-but-not-actively-looking-to-buy stage. Costco's policy has been much-lauded here and elsewhere so I had just started to look there when I saw "Policy Changing 2/26" notices.
Apparently the change in policy has not happened nationwide yet.
From a memo I saw on Slickdeals it looks like the change will happen on these dates:
CA: 2/26
Rest of West Coast: 3/12
MW and TX: 3/19
NE: 3/26
SE and PR: 4/2
I'm inferring that MW=midwest, NE=northeast, SE=southeast and PR=Puerto Rico. I live in VA, which I would consider Mid-Atlantic but it looks like NE is the closest fit.
I realize these questions are best put to a Costco employee but maybe you all can help out.
First, will people with the old policy be "grandfathered" into the old policy? Will that change after they exchange the original TV they purchased?
I am not a member now but I would consider becoming one if the policy was that good - but what happens if membership lapses? Can you re-activate it and still be covered?
Moving - I live in VA currently but that could (is more likely than not) to change in a year or two. Does anyone know how that would change the policy?
The appeal is a low-hassle, no questions asked return policy. It loses its appeal if I have to worry about whether a different store will accept a return for an item across the country.
Hope you all are better informed than I.
I'd bet Virginia is part of the southeast.
I've used my 32" Viewsonic three or four times now, with no problems (thankfully.) I'm using RCA cables for my PS2, and while the game looks surprisingly good, some of the text doesn't look as good. I'll probably look into getting better cables, as I bet I can find them for cheap. The stock audio is better than I would have bet.
All in all, I'm pretty happy with it. Good bang for the buck.
I had a stuck pixel on my first Westy, dragged it back to Best Buy and had no problem with my replacement one. I would not accept a bad pixel on a new TV.
So I'm going to get the 42" Vizio from Costco.
And I'm having a little trouble with the logistics. I have heard that you are not supposed to transport them lying flat, so I'm trying to figure out how to get it from Costco to my house. I have access to my Volvo wagon, a buddies Scion xB, a friend's Jeep Cherokee, and a friend's Explorer Sport. Does anyone know the approximate dimensions of one of these boxes?
My box (42" Westy but it should be close) is still in the garage. I'll measure it when I get home tonight if no one else has posted the answer.
My 42 was about "so" tall and about "yeah" wide. :\
I have heard that lcd tv's should be shipped upright... Do you think it would be bad for me to take it home lying on it's side?
It's only about 10 miles.
Any pointers? I'm thinking of going and picking it up after work.
Upright is best, but for a short distance, you'll be OK with the LCD on its side - AS LONG AS you make damn sure that the side facing "up" is the screen! You don't want the screen facing down.
The thing about transporting upright matters a bit more when it comes to plasmas, particularly as they are quite a bit heavier than LCDs.
Vizio has slashed the price of their 32" 720p LCD down to $599.
Not to continue to be a Vizio cheerleader, but that's pretty damn great.
The 37" 720p LCD is $799, which is pretty aggressive too. It was $999 at the start of December IIRC.
Well, I transported it laying down. As it was still in it's box, I'm not entirely sure it was face up. My friend and I operated under the assumption that the majority of the weight would be the back, and put that side down in the car. But the moral of the story is that it travels just fine.
I got the tv home just fine and it's fantabulariffic-tastical magic. A little calibration and that thing looks awesome. My friend just paid ~$3000 for a 46" Aquos and I can't really discern a visual difference. I have plenty of detail in my blacks, and the colors look great. Even my SD xbox media center doesn't look like total garbage... just mostly like garbage...
If anyone has questions about the 42" Vizio from Costco, let me know and I'll help in whatever way I can.
I am getting rid of my Westinghouse 32" LCD because of a problem I recently discovered - MASSIVE ghosting when scaling over VGA.
I tried playing Half-Life at 1280x720, and at 1024x768, and the ghosting was ridiculous. It wasn't the pixel response time that was the problem, it was the scaling video processing.
I hooked my laptop up to my Vizio to give it the same test. Despite having to scale much further (up to a native of 1920x1080 rather than 1360x768), the Vizio didn't ghost at all on these low resolutions.
So, since the plan for the 32" LCD is to be a computer monitor as well as a TV (and I want to be able to play plenty of old games on it too, like System Shock 2 in 1024x768), the Westy is getting sent packing, and naturally, I am getting the 32" Vizio. Hopefully that one performs as well as its big brother. (I would consider displays other than Vizio too, but the models I would want to consider aren't in the same price range at 32")
Newegg is now giving away a free PS3 with purchase of the 46" Sharp Aquos.
The funny thing is that if it were a free 360 (which I already have one of), I'd be sorely tempted.
I must now go post this in the haterade thread. See y'all there. =D
Has anyone here dealt with TechOnWeb.com? They have a pretty nice deal going on the Westinghouse 42w2 ($1265 shipped), but I'm a little worried that they don't have a dead-pixel policy. Will Westinghouse cover that kind of thing under warranty?
EDIT: Found an even better deal here, but I still have the same questions. Hopefully their customer service gets back to me soon.
Anyone have one of the larger Samsung LCD's they can comment on? I'm thinking about the 46 or 52" models. There are some new ones coming out this month, so the latest are seeing closeout prices. Thanks!
