The big "How do I choose an HDTV?" thread.

Every Christmas season I'm reminded how dated "Elf" is when Peter Dinklage's character brags about his wealth by describing how many 70 inch TVs he owns, 3rd place behind the number of homes he has and how much "action" he gets.

This tells me I should have spent the last 20 years investing less in large TVs and more in homes and action.

Posting this here, because it's kinda gonna be the most awesome thing to test 4K HDR TVs on:

So excited this exists having seen it in the theater. I have the regular Blu-ray. I will quickly give that away.

I ordered this as well (actually just got a shipping notification) and am beyond pumped. I never thought we'd get a 4K of it. So I will need to find someone to give my Blu-ray to as well.

I've never seen this movie. Worth the 4k blu ray cost?

For sure if you are into, like, Criterion Collection stuff.

I saw it in a really nice theater when it came out. Waypoint radio did a recent podcast on it which is really fun.

Has anyone else’s LG OLED after recent firmware updates now “force” the WebOS Home Screen on boot? Mine used to just jump into HDMI 1 to show my Xbox but now at least 2/3rds of the time I have to toggle my harmony remote to the LG TV and manually select HDMI 1 to get off the webos Home Screen.

I haven't had that happen on mine, but come to think of it I don't think I even have it connected to the internet at all.

That doesn't happen with mine either. Granted I usually turn it on via the HDMI-link, so maybe that tells the TV what input to go to initially.

Mine did a long time ago. IIRC there is a hidden option in the menu system to disable it. I also use it with a Harmony remote so it annoyed me very much.

Not sure if this is still relevant but I just found this:
Press settings button on remote - go to all settings at bottom - general - additional settings - home settings then disable home auto launch

Oh awesome. I will enable that today and see if it makes a difference.

Is this the right place to ask about sound bars?

Was looking at this Vizio one, seems highly rated enough, but not sure what else to look for in a decent sound bar.

Check out rtings best budget soundbars

So here's something that's been bothering me for a while and I wonder if anyone has already found the answer to this.

I've a bunch of MP4s on a NAS. They're standard format and play quite happily through any of my video players on my PC. When I try to stream them through my LG TVs using their inbuilt media player, it doesn't recognize the format.

Is there a MP4 codec I need to convert them too to allow the LG to play them natively, or is there an app I can install on the TVs to play the files?

Which tv model?

I have OLEDxxC9 and OLEDxxB7 models. Happens on all of them.

Ok looks like they might need to be encoded with h.264. Can you confirm if they are?

I used to use PMS, (PS3 Media Server) but I think it has other versions by now. It would stream files from my home PC to anything on the network and transcode if needed.

I think Universal Media Server is the fork that survived and will transcode for lots of different TV's.

It was very easy to install, select folders to share and what device was using them. And then on the PS3 you were just choosing media player and browsing, everything was quite easy even 10 years ago.

Emby is another good one I've seen in use by some friends. But it seems like overkill for what you're suggesting. It can handle large collections of shows, movies, etc and includes lots of metadata

Yes, they are. From VLC:

Codec: H264 - MPEG-4 AVC (part 10) (avc1)

OK, spent a bunch of time last time and solved (more accurately worked around) the problem.

I installed Plex Media Server on the NAS and Plex Media Player on the TV. Added bonus is that the media (movies) show in a list with poster art and descriptions. Much friendlier.

Glad you were able to make Plex work. It's generally a good software, but can be a bit rigid with naming and such, especially on episodic content / things with remakes that use the exact same name. I'm looking at you Disney live action remakes!

In 2023 you can buy a 100" fairly high end TV for $4,000. I feel like we're closer to Frank's 2000" TV than Weird AL probably ever thought we would be.

So, what with the holiday season approaching, I am looking to pick up a TV to replace the one in our basement that is dying.

Looking for around 60 inches

Smart TV (with Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc)

Wireless

It's not likely to be used for gaming, ever.

It's in a basement with pretty good blinds for sunlight, and the seating will be about 12 feet back.

Ideally available on Amazon.ca or at a BestBuy.

Budget? If looking for cheap I would go with a TCL with the built-in Roku interface. If $$$ then go with an LG OLED.

12ft back is pretty far and I recommend getting 65 or 70" if you can fit it in both the space and the budget.

Yeah we love the TCL Roku. I'm sure there are better LED things out there, but the apps work, the voice directions work, and it looks good enough in 4k.

Budget is no more than $1k Canadian.

The TCL Q7 might work. It has the Google TV interface though, not Roku.

Finally pulled the trigger on an OLED. My Sony 940D is getting old and slow. Has power issues. Actually surprised it's taken me this long to get into OLED. I do have an QD-OLED for my monitor. But never owned a OLED TV.

Ordered a 77" LG G3 to replace it.

Oh. That's gonna be lovely. We got a beautiful media center this year in preparation for a nice big OLED eventually. Just have a cheap TCL 4K HDR LCD that has sufficed for several years.

I'm late to the party, but damn, this is the perfect answer, in all areas.

I ended up grabbing the TCL 65" Q-Class 4K UHD HDR QLED Smart Google TV", along with a TCL sound bar.
