Tour of Apple TV

Looks slick.. I wonder if you can rip your own DVD's as vobs and stream them?

probably not

I want to see if the Perian guys can get their software on the box myself.

I have to say, personally, this is a big fat yawner to me. I've fiddled with MCE, MCE Vista, Myth, Snapstream etc. All of them offer pretty crucial functionality (or can be hacked easily for it) that this just don't got, no matter how pretty it is. And it is pretty, don't get me wrong. Call me when it can talk to the server in the basement with all my DVDs and record BattleStar Galactica off the Cable I already pay for, without having to buy it by the piece.

And it still cant replace my HD DVR (then again, neither does my HTPC).

How many nerds do I know that will use that screensaver to display miles of floating naked women?

Again, until someone hacks this, it's useless. But it's an Intel-based Mac, it has to be based on OSX. It can't be that hard.

But when it's hacked, I'm all over it.

Arise...

Can anyone comment on the quality of mirroring video apps from iPad to an Apple TV? There are so many nice apps that I'd like to sling to my tv and Chromecast development seems stalled or will just never catch on in any big way.

Does the video scale to an HD screen, or does it keep the iPad's dimension? Is the video quality decreased significantly?

I know it uses the iPad's aspect ratio, so an HD TV does have space on the left and right sides. Quality tends to be based off from connection quality, as I've seen good and I've seen very bad.
