Post a picture of your pet!

Gorilla, how much space do you need for a Guinea Pig? We're thinking of getting two for the girls and have them share the same cage, what would you recommend? Obviously, I will personally keep an eye on things as the girls are too young to do everything themselves, but it will be a fun way to teach them a little responsibility. I used to own a hamster but guinea pigs are a lot bigger, and I'm getting conflicting information on the size of cage I would need.

"I draw you in with my cuteness but you will stay for the cuddlyness." - Om Nom.

When I see pictures of hamsters, guinnea pigs and gerbils, it just reminds me of Lemmywinks and The Hobbit parody.

He is extremely cuddly and cute, but a little bit shy. We're planning on getting him a companion within next week or two.

Two things about cages sold at pet stores:

1. They're extremely overpriced
2. They're much too small for guinnea pigs. The biggest one is barely enough for a single GP. Definitely too small for two.

GPs love to run. Given enough room, healthy GPs love to run laps around their cage just for the fun of it. Even with that, it's good to give them "floor time" sometimes -- section off a swath of floor, drop in a toy and a brown paper bag with hay, and let them run in there for 30 min. Putting them into small cages depresses them.

Me and the kids have already assembled a bigger cage using the popular "Cubes and Coroplast" method described here. It's still cheaper than our store-bought cage, plus it's bigger and more flexible. Not to mention that kids get to have fun working on "a project". After we make an addition to our house next spring, we'll move the cage into a different room and will upgrade it from 2x3 to 2x4 cubes layout.

Om Nom lives in his old cage for now -- we want to move him and the new companion at once, so that he doesn't feel excessively territorial about it. We don't know how to name the 2nd GP yet -- guessing we have to pick one and see him first, but I am leaning towards "Soap", "Price", or maybe "Nikolai".

We used to have a hamster too, some 8 years ago. Guinnea pig is so much fun. Om Nom is awake during the day and is not hiding in his house, he's nice, warm and cuddly and not smelly at all, you can actually take him onto your lap as a kitten, stroke him, and he'll make happy sounds, and he never bites.

Awesome, that's exactly the kind of info I was looking for, thanks. That cage has a canvas bottom, right? We were initially shying away from those because we weren't sure how good they are for cleaning, or whether the guinea pig would chew his way through it. If you say they are good (and modular!) then we'll look into those again. Most of the cages we've seen so far have been on the small side, which is one of the reasons we've been holding off.

No, that is not a canvas bottom. It's an old doormat from the laundry room which my kid threw in there, because it happens to fit the dimensions exactly. When we move the Guinnea pigs in, there will be fiber bedding in there (sold at pet stores -- essentially recycled paper). Without it, it'd just be an empty Coroplast tray -- smooth plastic. They say that guinnea pigs are not interested in chewing it, for some reason. Doesn't taste good, probably.

Ah, ok. Yeah, I can't imagine plastic tasting good, even to a rodent. Thanks again for all that info, it's given me another avenue to look into to make the girls happy for Christmas!

Best of luck, and Merry Christmas to you, the girls, the missus, and the new Guinnea Pigs

One last word -- I'd advice to stay away from the breeds with long, dangly fur like this one. Our family friends have one, and it's a sad thing to look at. The fur takes a lot of care to keep neat, and even with that it has a proclivity to mat, stick, catch bits of cage bedding, food, and droppings, and just look untidy in general. Get a smooth-fur breed like ours.

Today we got a friend for Om Nom, codename Frosty. Man, the initial encounter didn't to well. Om Nom turned completely crazy and militant. Be chases poor Frosty around, despite the fact that Frosty is not putting your any opposition and appears to be readily submitting. Let's are whar tomorrow brings.

The reading glasses, they do nothing!

Sorry, posted that from my phone, auto-correct and all.

Check the thread title. This is the "Post a picture of your pet" thread, not the "Post a picture, entertain me" thread.

Hahahaha, damn you in-browser search!

Giles when not training Buffy Summers enjoys long walks in front of the camera. Oh, what am I doing? I am posing for a picture for my crazy holiday-horror photo series. If the powers that by will allow me to pimp a thread:

Strangeblades Catch-All

If that is not allowed let me know and I will edit this post. Sorry, I read the site rules once but can't remember. And I'm lazy and don't want to re-read them.

Om Nom warmed up to Frosty, and now is even bringing him pieces of apples and tangerines when Frosty is too shy to go out of his "igloo". Soo cuuute!!!!

Also, me and kids took them out of the cage yesterday to clean it, and to let them roam about on the section of the floor we fenced off. They were terrified of being in the open space sh*tless! When we finally put them back in, they hid together in the same house, doubtless hugging each other in silent horror.

IMAGE(http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/4657/gp2e.jpg)

And this is what the complete "cubes and coroplast" cage looks like.

Fruit delivery? That is cute.

Rilla,

Tell your wife I like the mix of patterns on the sofa and cushions, while keeping the colour scheme cohesive. Shame the guinea pig is the wrong colour.

1Dgaf: you have a very keen eye, my sir. I'll pass your kind words to my wife, who'll surely be delighted, because she re-upholstered that couch by herself, and then found coordinating throw pillows.

River has grown up a bit, and apparently joined a band.

That looks very familiar. My cats are always trying to climb the drums.

The wife and I have a 2yr old Puggle. She's great so wanted to get her a brother.

Here is Bo, the new addition
