EDIT: Funny story having to do with Samus - we originally thought she was a girl, but later found out that Samus was, in fact, male.
EDIT: the Second: What's our secret? Multiple kitty litter boxes. No less than five in the entire house, which get cleaned at least once a day. Ritualistic scouring of entire house each morning.

I'm pretty sure it's genetic. I might even go as far as to suggest it's a dominant trait.
