2 voice communicators on 1 Xbox LIVE account?

My buddy was over last night and we were playing on LIVE against some friends. First time we were both playing on LIVE via split-screen. Only one voice communicator would work though (mine).

We were signed in under my gamerag, JediJurist, and my friend's player name was "1 JediJurist" (and it had a tiny image next to the name that looked like a person's shoulders and head).

We tried to figure out a way for him to sign in under his gamertag simultaneously with mine, but it wouldn't seem to work. (We were playing on an original Xbox).

Any way to get both communicators working?

Guests are not allowed to use voice in Xbox and Xbox 360 games. Logging in multiple gamertags will allow both users to use voice comm but few old games support multiple logins.

If, say, TheWalt comes over to my house, is there any way for him to sign in as himself? Does it involve stupid memory cards?

EDITed to correct a typo, which is sadly immortalized in Demi's answer. I have brought shame upon my house.

Yes. Unless he wants to move his gamertag over to your 360 permanently.
