Escapist just posted that the HD versions will be available via HBO Go starting on Dec 26.

Goddamn Comcast still won't let me access HBO Go through my PS3.

I guess I'm figuring out a free way to get my wired-only 360 an internet connection without stringing a wire through my house.

And continuing to hate Comcast.

On Netflix/Hulu, and other streamers on January 5

Wait, HBO stuff is going to Netflix?

My mistake - it was Amazon Prime that got HBO stuff, not Netflix.

That makes more sense. I'm hoping Amazon actually gets the HD versions when they're supposed to. Comcast will allow me to stream that to my PS3.

My hope is that they don't take down the 4:3 versions. While David Simon's post made it clear that a lot of love and care went into the 16:9 HD transition, I'd prefer to watch the show in its original format.

That's why I have my DVD copies.

I need to read that article. I saw how long it was and closed that tab for now. I always assumed The Wire was one of those shows shot digitally that couldn't be transferred.

Wow. Just watched for the first time this summer on Amazon. Now I have to rewatch in HD?

I though we had another topic around here somewhere where I talked about watching it while I was doing so this summer? But maybe that was just in the Amazon Prime Video thread. Oh well.

It was filmed on 35mm, so it can theoretically be sized up to 4K resolutions without any distortion. The main issue is that it was filmed with a 4:3 aspect ratio in mind while the HD update moves it into a 16:9 aspect ratio. As David Simon notes in that article, that can cause all kinds of weird problems with altering shot compositions (for good and for bad), as well as capturing aspects of the production like microphones, staff, and other actors at the edges of the shot who would have been off-camera at 4:3 but are on camera in the wider 16:9 shots.

Here is a scene (with significant 2nd season spoilers) that Simon feels is improved by the ratio change:

Here is a scene from the pilot (Wee-Bey hard like a rock!) that Simon feels is diminished:

I have a feeling a lot of the close-in conversations might suffer. The chess explanation. McNulty asking the kid about his friend Boogie. 4:3 4ever.

I hope they have both options in the inevitable Blu Ray box set.

I just finished this fabulous show today! Amazon getting that HBO connect made it easy.

Love that show

And look at how many careers that show launched. Michael B. Jordan, Idris Elba, and Miachael K. Williams all became recognized big screen actors since.

I've been tickled by True Detective's use of some of the actors from this show. Always good to see The Wire alumni on my television.

Three of them have shown up on The Walking Dead as well.

Arise thread and having just finished the whole deal, yeah, Season 4 was the best, because of the school story line and what happened with Bubs. I get why some people are put off by Season 5, but I found it sufficiently entertaining while being completely bonkers at the same time. If I had to pick favorite characters, I'd have to go with Lester, the Bunk, Omar, and Snoop (who I thought for the bulk of Season 4 was actually a very young boy but either way she was one scary motherf*cker). Also, half of the .gifs I see on Twitter now make sense.

Edit: And I didn't see it mentioned when I skimmed the thread, but thanks to someone who appeared in Season 5...

Spoiler:

...The Wire exists in the same shared universe as Homicide, Law & Order, The X-Files, so on and so forth.

It was funny, it was like a day or so ago I was wondering what the odds were of Richard Belzer showing up and suddenly there he was in what was...fourth to last, I want to say?

Snoop basically played herself, fwiw.
