Finished Any Games Lately?

I also "finished" Animal Well recently (saw credits, found 20-something eggs) but that is a lot further than I expected to go. I can only echo what Spikeout said in a less knowledgeable way. The vibes are off the chart!

Deliver Us Mars has a lot of heart. It has wonderful attention to spacey detail like rocket launch procedures and is telling an earnest story about humanity's possible future. But you can see the seams, budget constraints I guess, with a very limited set of things to do and some overall jank that was occasionally frustrating. Still it doesn't drag on too long and felt worthwhile at the end.

Cat Quest is very slick, just enough RPG to be interesting with almost completely frictionless number go up satisfaction. Very limited mechanics, but it does a lot with a little. Once again it's over pretty quickly but a good undemanding time while it lasts, except for the rampant cat puns.

Miasma Chronicles is from the Mutant Year Zero people and very similar in style. I think they were trying to focus on the story and world building but unfortunately I found both pretty lacklustre. The main party were all pretty annoying too, which made the "friendship wins the day" message a bit hard to swallow. I did enjoy the turn based combat though, which had a nice combination of stealth and strategy. Miasma powers are the new hotness, but while they are indeed powerful and fun, they are very limited in how often they can be used. I actually found the character without the powers more useful overall because he didn't require so much setup. The overall combination of story, exploration and tactical combat is still a winner, but in this case I think the individual elements were a bit lacking.

Both Cat Quests have been comfort food games at the time I took them on. Looking forward to the third one.

I just started playing Cat Quest 2 co-op with the kiddo yesterday. It's the right amount of cute and mostly devoid of challenge (we put it on story mode).

I was going to check it out, but that sounds pretty ruff.

I completed my favorite game, Marathon, for the ?th time. With Bungie’s new entry on the horizon, and a recent Steam rerelease, I figured it was time to dip my toes in once again and get all the shiny new achievements along the way.

And I’m glad I did. Obviously 90% of my love of this game comes from being a young lad, staring at my computer screen, seeing a whole universe and world of possibilities of which I could only scratch the surface. I didn’t even own the full game until I was a teen… I just played the 3 level demo over and over again with the meager 4 FPS my Mac IIci could handle.

But the game is legitimately good. Although it was released a year after DOOM in 1994, it showcased a level of storytelling and pacing that wouldn’t be surpassed in another FPS until Half-life was released 6 years later. Its cryptic terminals and scattered texts spawned a rabid story community unmatched until Dark Souls. It spawned Halo, and Bungie continues to use elements from it to this day. If it hadn’t released on Mac and been overshadowed by DOOM, it probably would be heralded as one of the great classics of its era, rather than the shadowy status that it has today.

As for this playthrough, I had a blast. I decided to play on Total Carnage for the first time (the hardest difficulty), and it definitely kicked my butt. But I slowly learned to crawl and claw forward to make progress, and eventually I came to the finish line. All achievements conquered. Every secret found. Every terminal read.

Now all that’s left to do is wait for the eventual Marathon 2 Steam release. I prefer 1 for the music, story, and atmosphere, but 2 is still a blast to play.

I finished the remake of Super Mario RPG, and the original was the first game I ever played in any capacity (afaicr). And the remake is a total nostalgic joy. The levels are the same, the combat is the same, the music is pretty much the same (just updated by the same legendary composer who did the first game), the dialogue is almost all the same. I could run around and talk to everyone and some deep part of my monkey brain knew exactly what each NPC was about to say. It's just relentlessly joyful to play, from the style to the music to the atmosphere. It was easy and short (12 hours and did almost all of the content in the one run), and served as a perfect bridge game to whatever I play next.

The family and I sat down and finished Chants of Sennaar on XBox over the weekend.

We all sat around the living room puzzling through grammar and possible meanings while learning the languages of the inhabitants. A good time was had, even through the aggravating sneaky bits.
With all the backtracking we managed to get all but 4 of the achievements through normal gameplay. A short look at a guide and I was able to mop up 3 of those and then grind through the last. 100% and done with it.

If I had been forced to beat the Whack a Mole game to progress this would have been an insta-quit. Good play by the developers to include two games that can satisfy the condition.

The 90's were a slog but I am counting Diablo 4 finished

Been on a retro game kick for a bit.

Fired up my old Star Wars: Rogue Leader for the GameCube, trying to see if I could beat the final level (which I never could when I was younger). Still couldn't, even with a extra lives cheat. The last mission has you flying through the death star tubes like at the end of RotJ, but there's sharp turns and nothing is well lit. I got up to that point but hit the same wall I used to. Calling it done.

I also played Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, which was another game I couldn't finish when I was younger. I think the charm and cheese saw me through it, since many of the missions were either sort of boring (Tails/Eggman), or painfully tedious (Knuckles/Rouge). The music was probably the best part. And the camera was the worst. But I finally finished it, putting another game from 20 years ago to bed.

I just finished Unicorn Overlord and absolutely loved all 55 hours of it. A spiritual successor to the Ogre Battle series it was a breath of fresh air. I loved the mechanics of building units, setting items and skills and watching them fight it out.

After choosing your party's composition you send each unit of 2 to 5 heroes around the map to strategically choose your battles.

For example I paired a witch with a gryphon rider to handle high evasion enemies. The witch has a "truestrike" spell that activates when another ally attacks making their attack always hit. The gryphon rider was equipped with a weapon that attacks all units in a row. The result was their front line was taken down quickly and other units could attack the weaker back row.

Taking a break from overthinking the protagonist's schedule in Persona 4, I ended up playing something that I'd picked up for free from GOG from some sale or other.

That game being... Shantae and the Pirate's Curse. It was pretty fun! In fact, before I got too far through it, I ended up seeking out its two prequels, the original Shantae (for the Gameboy Color!) and the HD re-release of Shantae – Risky's Revenge. So I ended up finishing all three short vaguely-Metroidvania games about a half-genie girl and her adventures in Sequin Land. Fairly lighthearted, sometimes goofy, occasionally genuinely funny and not too difficult (except when they suddenly are—and the first game is of a less gentle time, let's say). So that was a good diversion from the hundred-hour RPGs I usually end up playing for months on end.

I may draw the protagonist and/or her friends at some point.

(which is a truly insane challenge) or things that require a new playthrough (3x require a second playthrough, 3x require time challenges, 2x require steel soul mode). Total played 34.5 hours.

This is a one of a kind game that is the pinnacle of its genre. It nails (hah) so many things that it’s hard to even start. Its sense of scale, immersion, world building, combat precision, charm, music, style are just incredible. This has all been said before, of course, but I had to gush a bit. I’m glad I finally gave it a real shot.

The challenge ramp up to just nutso levels was so well done and felt very satisfying. I felt like a badass, just barely dodging attacks and squeezing in hits to pull out wins. Minor complaint that the very final challenges are just very intense and there’s really no way to mitigate it. The last challenge is just never going to happen for me.

I really appreciated the built-in-game assist late in the game to help find the remaining grubs, but I kinda wish that existed for missed badges and other random upgrades. I looked up locations because I had no idea, and had missed about 10 things (hidden badges, secret upgrades, a couple hidden enemies I’d missed).

Obviously strongly recommended.

I finished A Plague Tale Innocence on Saturday evening. I've offered some comments on the thread for that game, but suffice to say here that I won't be playing the sequel, 'Requiem'. I didn't enjoy the gameplay, particularly in the final three chapters, so I won't be playing the follow-up which is twice as long.

Finished Chants of Sennaar at 10 hours. It's a game where you decipher 5 symbol languages using clues from the game, sort of the way you solve murders in Return of the Obra Dinn.

It has a great visual style, really clever puzzles, and an interesting story. It worked great as 'couch coop' and streaming coop. It does a great job of making you feel like a genius. We only needed walkthrough help twice out of probably 100+ things to figure out.

Note if you're playing it, it's not over until you get the In this Together achievement (Reaching the real end of the game) it looks like it just starts you over at the 'end' and I can tell by the achievement numbers that some people think it's done

Started and finished Pollimines over the weekend. It's a Hex/Squarecells-like (minesweeper + nonograms). I've been playing Tametsi recently, and it's a much more difficult version of the same thing, so being able to play through Pollimines in a short period was a nice break.

I replayed DOOM Eternal, inspired by The Dark Ages announcement. Now to murder The Ancient Gods. Both of them.

Sadly I am so rusty I had to use “I’m too young to die” difficulty, despite objectively not being too young to die.

Next up, continuing AC Odyssey replay and probably replaying DOOM! Why am I ignoring all the awesome untouched games in my library? Guess I’m craving the familiar.

Picked that up on iOS. I have a bias against puzzle games because apparently I don’t think like the typical puzzle game creator. Liquidium somehow broke through that for me.

I can vouch for the awesomeness of Shantae: Half-Genie Hero.

Hardspace: Shipbreaker. Tearing down and salvaging ships was pretty satisfying. I was thinking to myself as I played: it must be more challenging to create a game like this where you have to develop all the systems from scratch, vs. say, an FPS, where you have a basic foundation of countless other games to build from. The closest thing I've played to it was probably the destruction aspects of Red Faction Guerilla- another fun game. I was bummed to read a proposed sequel to that was shot down recently.

There was just enough variety of ships with increasing size and complexity to keep me interested until I finished the story. The plot itself, collecting audio journals, and upgrading your gear added a bit, but were less interesting and would not have been enough to motivate me to the end if the gameplay didn't satisfy. Luckily, I was able to resist my gaming OCD and didn't force myself to reach maximum shipbreaker rank or collect all the audio logs. I could tell I was about to start having markedly diminishing returns in enjoyment. I've found some of my favorite games of recent years know exactly when to end before they start wearing out their welcome.

Final Fantasy XVI. As someone who played and enjoyed previous series low points like 8 and all three parts of 13, it gives me no pleasure to say this, but I really didn't like this entry.

The game is very poorly served by its decision to take inspiration from Game of Thrones. Final Fantasy is supposed to be about a colourful, cheerful cast of anime cliches zipping around on an airship and defeating God through the power of friendship. Its not supposed to be about grimdark men trudging through the mud, grousing about the effect of the war on the turnip harvest in bad Northern accents before encountering a field of mutilated corpses.

Like too many other properties who have tried to crib from Game of Thrones, they've drawn all the wrong lessons from the show, taking the violence, misery and overcomplicated political intrigue while forgetting to include any memorable characters or original plot twists. Combined with uninspired combat and some of the dullest side quests I've ever played, 16 became a real chore to finish.

There were some things I did like about it though. It looks amazing! Final Fantasy is still at the cutting edge of graphics technology in games. I also did quite enjoy some of the dungeons and set-piece boss fights, where the game leaned more into the kind of hysterical spectacle that better suits the series. And lastly, I appreciated the swearing. In previous entries it always felt a bit odd when someone didn't scream "FUUUCK" when a continent destroying ball of energy was being launched at their head.

I finished Tiny Tina's Wonderlands on Ps Plus Extra and my that sure is some Borderlands. Numbers on guns went up but as usual I come away from the end feeling slightly unsatisfied.

I do enjoy these games mostly because I play the whole thing coop and that makes most things fun, the online works beautifully and that's probably the main thing for me. I would recommend if previous Borderlands are your jam but there is nothing here to bring previous naysayers into the fold.

TTW has quite a few niceties compared to previous sequels:
classes
dual classes
character creator
additional equipment slots
meaningful pet classes
spells
for me many of the weapon types remind me of the eridium "unique" weapons of the original game
much more interesting open world
