Suggest Me Some Metal

I f*cking love that disc. Rude Awakening is great too. Tommy Victor laid down some of the meanest riffs in history for those two albums.

I'm actually super excited to check out Liquid Tension Experiment, as it sounds like it's got the intricate musicality of Dream Theater without giant-hair falsetto vocal bullsh**.

It's kind of that. It's also kind of three good songs and some semi-improvised sh*t they threw together in the studio to fill up an album. The second album is better than the first in that regard, it feels a lot more premeditated (and less like a Mike Varney cash grab).

Amen, brother! I've always loved how his guitar sounds. For years my guitar sound was similar. I also love the fingered harmonics. I can't believe I turned up my nose to this album back when it came out. I think it was because people labeled it metal/industrial. I was an industrial snob.

Well, I've got my motherload of mothereffin' metal, and I'm loving it.

Honestly, half of the enjoyment I'm getting from it is amusement at the ludicrousness of it. Slayer paints a big stupid grin on my face because of how silly it is, which I'm pretty sure isn't what they intended.

One of my current favorite Stoner Metal bands - The Sword have a new album, and as expected it's fantastic.

Don't believe me listen to the riff about 40 sec. in the intro track. HOLY sh*t.

Just heard some tracks from Heathen's The Evolution of Chaos and dug what I heard. I don't think they've come up in this thread yet, so here we go. Youtube compression is ugly though.

Those tracks are damn good. The riff starting at about 2:43 of Control by Chaos is f*cking sweet. Sounds like a modern version of old school Exodus or Overkill, which is a huge win. I previewed some other songs from the album, then immediately bought/downloaded it.

Speaking of Overkill, while browsing around just now, I noticed that their latest album, Ironbound, got really high reviews across the board. I previewed a couple tracks from that, then bought it too. I'm loving the fact that thrash is making somewhat of a comeback.

PROGRESS REPORT:

Oh Dear.

Listening to Dream Theater's 'Images & Words' right now, and it's not good.

I mean, really, not aged well. I always knew it was a bit cheesey, but this makes Roquefort look like fresh milk. There's a sax solo, for crying out loud. I mean, it was the 90's and everything, but there's no excuse for that.

Prong and Slayer on the other hand, I've been thoroughly enjoying. Slayer is frickin' hilarious - I mean, it's musically great, but the whole 'death metal' theme is laughable. I vacillate between moshing at the metalitude and giggling at the sheer ludicrousness of it. Do people take it seriously, or is it one big in-joke?

Next up: Pantera, Sepultura and 'Maiden

Awake has aged quite a bit better, FWIW.

I'm not much of a Slayer fan, so I can't speak to the general fan attitude, but I appreciate them in much the same way you do. On the other hand, I have encountered a number of dudes who take Slayer very seriously.

I think of Slayer as an early version of Dethklok. And yes, I loves me some Dethklok.

I dunno, is Slayer really death metal? I mean the double-kick was a precursor to death and grindcore, but Slayer doesn't seem like death.

No, you're right, Slayer is thrash, not death.

Slayer isn't Death Metal.

Try Deicide. Not much for the lyrics/vocals or subject matter.. but the music is pretty awesome.

Another few suggestions for you all:
Charred Walls of the Damned is a metal supergroup featuring Richard Christy from the Howard Stern Show on drums, and Tim Owens formally of Judas Priest. Give it a try it's really good!

My current favorite mathcore band, Dillinger Escape Plan:

last but certainly not least. My favorite current band, and proud Canadians:

Protest the Hero

I get the feeling Jonman was talking about the lyrics to Slayer.

Edit: Whoa, I hadn't paid any attention to Prong in well over a decade. I didn't realize Al Jourgensen was on their 2007 album.

Yup, agreed. But Jonman sh*t all over my recommendations so he can eat a dick.

(;))

Jonman, you should add some Amon Amarth to that list. Fate of Norns or With Oden on our Side are great, and put that same stupid grin on my face you describe. That's exactly how I feel about this kind of music

As mentioned, Chemical Wedding by Bruce Dickinson is an incredible cd. I like the one after that as well, Tyranny of Souls.

If you like Pantera check out the killer first album by The Haunted.

edited to add song link.

Never had dick. Balls, sure, but dick's still on the list.

If Cartman can be considered an authoritah its death metal -the best hippie deterrent.

Quintin just PMed you didn't he? For your own private slap and tickle I imagine.

A gentlemanne never tells.

I'm SO glad you guys mentioned Prong. It had been way too long since I'd given them a listen.

It is always a good day for Prong.

I'll further emphasise just how great a CD Bruce Dickinson's The Chemical Wedding is. It tops anything Maiden has ever done. If you don't believe me, take a loot at all the Amazon reviews.

And while we are on the topic, the new Maiden album is just okay. I keep hoping for something better from them but never get it.

If you like the more progressive stylings of Dream Theater or LTE, try Redemption's Snowfall On Judgement Day. So much better than anything Dream Theater has released recently.

One last recommendation: Blackbird by Alterbridge. Yah, I know it's just Creed with a new singer but it is much harder than Creed ever was. Maybe not everyone's definition of true metal but close enough for me.

I really like Don Caballero, and while not being "metal" per se, they certainly get heavy.

DonCab is cool, as are other "math-rock" bands. I really like Turing Machine.

Both great bands. Damon Che is a god and amazing live.

Back to the metal...Dethklok, Mastodon, and The Sword are some of the best "modern" metal I've heard in a long time. Don't discount Dethklok just because it's from a cartoon, Brendan Small is uber-talented.

Ok, so here is my list:

- Tool (Start with 10,000 days)
- System of a Down (Start with Hypnotize)
- Scars on Broadway, only have on album so far. But it rocks! (System of a down's guitarist, drummer and backup vocals. Plus the writing talent)

These are my favorites of the favorites! Seen the first two in concert and can't wait until Scars on Broadway starts touring!

None of these are the hardest of hard metals. But I tend to like my metal a little closer to titanium that lead (as far as heaviness goes)

Cheers,

SodaGremlin

Blasphemy!! Neither of those two albums are a good place to start with either band.

Where would you have him start?

System of a Down, their debut album. If that's too raw then Toxicity.

Toxicity would be good too, but I think the best songs and composition is on Hypnotize.
