PC woes

Alright, my father went through the apartment and fiddled with the fuse box, long story short, it turned the power off in the office where my pc is in standby mode, I turn on my computer today and get through the vid card check and shows verying DMI pool data, Biostar logo pops ups, then I hear the hard drive like usual, then I get this error:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

\system32\hal.dll.
Please reinstall a copy of the above file.

So do I need a copy of my WinXP in order to repair/retrieve this file, need a brand new reinstall of XP or is there another more obvious, much less painful way going about this?

You need your OS CD, insert it and boot. You should get an option to start the recovery console. Using this page you should be able to restore any files.

"Open Windows XP, HAL."

HAL.dll
"I'm afraid I can't do that Dave."

Thank you Eezy, I will get the cd out of storage when we move to the new house at the end of the month... argh.

You don't have a friend with a copy you can use? You should even be able to copy the cd as long as it's the same version (OEM, Retail, Dell etc). It's your key you need to protect now-a-days not the cd...
