Blizzard Announces Warcraft Movie

Official press release here.

It has to happen at some point right? Oh please, please don't suck.

One of my first post here was in a thread about the WoW cinematics, and how Blizzard should make a movie.

*cough* (by about 4 hours)

Curses!

Wait, they've already done Warcraft movies! Although...nope, I see my DVD of Dhebriel Does Deeprun Tram doesn't have a Blizzard logo on it...

Well, shoot, they should think about putting out some of these 'amateur' movies themselves. Dhebriel's so good, it's inspired a few 'unofficial releases' of my own, if you know what I mean...

Since the other thread is in the MMO forum, where I don't go, I'll just stick my comments here.

The irony is that the whole Warcraft license has always been kind of a slap in the face to the whole Warhammer license. Games Workshop was so defensive about selling little metal men that they kept too tight restrictions on any other direction until it was far too late.

Now Blizzard is doing a movie. Hah, I say! Hah!

I'm stoked. As I said on the pass, I turst blizzard to make sure that the script is good. And of course it will be visually stunning. Hopefully Blizz's CG guys will go the way of the Square CG team (just more financially successful.) :p

Diablo 2 cinematics > WoW cinematics. And they showed those in actual movie theaters too.

Why live action?
As Badferret said in that long ago post (I think I actually remember the exact one) Blizzard is obviously dying to make a CGI movie, and lord knows they gotz the skillz.
But despite their great quality control, I don't think even Blizzard can pull off a live action Warcraft movie. The scope is too big (do you include ALL of the races? All of the backstory?), and the world too cartoonish. You'd certainly have to change the tone completely. And then why not just make Diablo?

I'm more hopeful that the movie is "artistically" successful. The stories of both square movies left a lot to be desired for me and I want for there to be a game film that is actually respected for once.

EDIT: I also would rather they make a Diablo movie

Don't hold your breath on this one until you hear that the movie is actually in production. In Hollywood, it ain't real until it's shooting.

I agree that a CGI movie is preferred (I mean all-CGI) but I don't want blizz to do it. They have trouble enough getting a little expansion done. Plus their character faces need some work, across the board.

Live action is scary, but there's two words that are far more terrifying:

Uwe Boll

Hopefully, he'll fall of the face of the earth before a director is selected.

You know, I think Blizz should just run a big contest, with bigger prices, for fan made video There are so many talented people out there...

But yeah I love the idea of CGI, perhaps a movie that bridge the gap of WC3 and WoW? Despite all the crappy things that are happening right now inside blizz, I am confident that they can produce quality CGI on par of FF Advent Children.

Plus it has to do with Blizzard. I will be expecting this in 2015.

Off by what... a year? Not a bad prediction!

PS. That teaser looks AMAZING! And I'm not even a WoW fan!

It is a nice trailer but I wonder how popular this movie can be to others besides WoW fans.

Music was neat. Thought the visuals were turrible.

Funny story. My roommate fired up his Xbox on the high-def and queued up the Warcraft trailer. He knows I am a pretty big Blizz fan and asks me if I have seen it.

Told him I had and that I was not impressed. He starts it and I couldn't believe my eyes.

It looked completely different. The visuals looked amazing. I had watched the trailer on both my iphone and laptop. They looked like sh*t. Put it on the TV and it looks completely different.

Looks pretty exciting. As to whether non blizzard fans will want seemingly generic action fantasy? Mediocre desire.
I actually think the political situation behind it all adds well to the drama though.

It seems like a great movie so far. I don't really watch movies but this is one I'll have to see. But it does feel that the current WoW expansion, which is universally regarded as the worst one, was made entirely to promote this movie.

Ehh, not really. That's Cataclysm. Granted, Warlords of Draenor is nowhere near as good as WotLK, but not nearly as bad as Cataclysm was.

Waiiiiiit a second, wait just one second!!... I've just realized that this will be released in the US on June 10th but on May 28th for France!!! Ha! Think I'll go see it before the rest of you just because.

You go right on ahead.

Shine on you crazy diamond.

It's becoming a trend by now for blockbusters. Hollywood gets most of its revenues from international market now.
I remember there was a time when I had to wait for like couple of months for movie to be released here, after the release in States.
Now we get them a week before the Staties.

The reviews have not been good.

The US is a pretty small fraction of the world population; there's a lot more money outside the States than in it. Kinda surprised it took this long, to be honest.

Maybe I'm missing something, but what would be the problem with releasing movies worldwide at the same time? They're all delivered digitally now, I assume.

That laugh doesn't help the mental image for me, since every time I see your location I think you are from Latveria.
