Laptop locking up

My laptop of several years is locking up whenever I try to play a video through Microsoft Media Player or attempt to use my Slingbox. This problem developed out of nowhere and now I am not sure what to do about it. The Microsoft Media Player is up to date and I have uninstalled Slingbox, but the problem persists. Any thoughts on (a) how to fix it or (b) how to disagnose the problem more accurately would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Lets rule out that WMP is borked by trying another media player. I recommend If the laptop is still locking up could you post the hardware, and all that jazz? When was the last time you reinstalled windows?

It has been a long time (maybe two years). I guess that is the best ("only way to be sure") approach. I'll check out the other mediaplayer (videolan or other) and will report back. This darn thing was working fine and then poof.

It will probably be 24 hours before I can sit in front of the laptop for any length of time. Thanks Edwin for your response!

It looks like I've discovered the issue. The hardware acceleration was set too high ~ I had to drop it down three levels or so and now I am no longer suffering lock-ups. Interesting. Never had that problem before.

Edwin, thanks for your help.
