-help..XBox 360 Live and Voice Chat

ok so im a live noob to the nth degree. I just got it all set up with my new 360 (never did live on 1st gen xbox either) Anyway, i plug in the headset and start up graw and hop in a game. i had the little switch on the headset moved over to the left thinking that would mute the microphone. Poeple in the room started complaining about an echo in the room and I got nervous thinking i did something wrong and unplugged my headset, the problem went away apparently as they thought someone must have left the room. So how exactly does the live headset work? can I not have it and tv sound on at the same time? does everything in the room always get broadcast over the mic? ie my wife callin me a dork etc... I also noticed if i even slightly touched the area where the headset connects to the controller, it would transmit static.

coming from a pc background im a little confused.

i would rtfm but unfortunately I cant read or write.

If it is echoing, clean the part you are plugging into the controller. It ships with a little bit of film on it that isn't really visible, but will royally annoy everyone else in the room.

As for picking up ambient sound, it will definitely do that if its loud enough, and if you have the voice set to come through the TV instead of the headset, make sure you keep the TV quiet.

The slider pushed left is indeed 'mute' - as in you are now muted. You can cough or sneeze or swear violently into the mic, or demand chocolate milk from mommy without being heard by the others in the room. (most prefer the violent swearing and insolent demands with the mic on)

In the GRAW lobby you can see a little talking bubble (like a comic book) next to your name if your mic is making noise so if you dont see it and someone is complaining of an echo or noise or whatever, then you know it isnt you (and you can probably tell who is causing it by looking at other people's bubbles.

Not entirely true. Basically if everyone is complaining of echo, but you don't hear it, you are doing it.

I'll check for the film on the plug tonight when I get home. sounds like that could be it. so I guess the mic isnt all that sensitive or peoples tv sound would feedback through the mic all the time?

ps i now know this probably should have been in the tech help board but again...I cant read or write.

Its a GRAW bug causing the echo isnt it? I havent heard it happen to anyone in other games.

or is it really a loop with voice over TV speakers playing too loudly and feeding back into the mic?

Its not just GRAW, its live in general.

Yup, I've seen it in PGR3 several times.

I had this same problem.

Mine ended up being a bad Live Communicator. Everyone else heard the feedback but me. It didn't matter if I muted the TV or turned off the mic. I plugged in my headset to my cell phone, and it went away.

I eventually got a new Communicator and that works too. Weird thing for me. Even in GRAW, my little talky blinking light always stays on in the lobby, even if I mute the mic. The only way I can get it to go away is to unplug the Communicator.

Maybe its the controller it is plugged into, JD
