It's the whole "Girls Gone Wild" phenom.

But "Boys Gone Wild" won't sell well. Maybe in prisons and San Francisco.. Hmmm potential market.

Atlanta Magazine has a good article about this case:

I'm astounded that the jury didn't know the kid would automatically get 10 years. They've said they wouldn't have found him guilty if they'd known that.

And, unless he wins an appeal, he's now a felon. He can't vote, get a real job, get student loans...nothing. And he'll have to register on the child molester list for the rest of his life. His life, for all intents and purposes, has been destroyed.

What I'd really like to know is the color of the girls involved. Just idle curiosity really...but I wonder if we got a little down home racism action. Was this boy really convicted because he f*cked a white girl?

I hope Michelle, the girl who started the whole "oooh, Momma, I'm not a slut, they raped me!" cascade that ended with these 6 boys seeing prison time gets the karma she deserves. Jesus Christ, if you're going to get drunk and f*ck a bunch of boys, either roll with your nymph tendencies or don't drink...pretty simple, really. Don't punish the boys because you're embarrassed.

And trust me, I'm the last one to defend a rapist, or a date rapist...but I've known too many girls who have done sh*t like this, where they were embarrassed by something they did at a party, and claimed to have been raped. Those women make life so much harder for real rape victims.

I find it telling that the 15 year old and her family didn't want charges pressed.

This case is a freaking travesty...and if there is any justice left in our country, these kids will be released.

Interesting read, Deva, and agreed pretty much all around. Just one thing, though, on the race issue: looks like the girls were black as well. From the linked article:

The Douglasville Six case, McDade insists, in no way detracts from his long-standing track record. McDade says that critics are merely playing the proverbial race card. "I think there is an attempt to shy away from a focus on the specifics of this case by some who would like to use any case to create racial disharmony in this community," he says. "I think the members of the black community should stand up and say, "˜We don't condone the behavior of these young men.'" Had he not pursued charges against the boys, his critics could have just as easily chastised him for failing to protect the rights of the two black females. "I'm standing up for African-American victims in this case, as I would for any white victim," says McDade, an alum of Douglas County High, where he played baseball. "Calling me a racist denigrates the people who are victims in this case."

So I guess at least the case can be a travesty on its own merits.

I wonder why any parent would let their 15/17 year old daughter party with a bunch of guys in a hotel room for New Year's anyway.

Maybe I'm paranoid, but what happened is the sort of thing I'd worry about as a parent.

That being said, I don't think the sentence was at all proportionate to the crime. Michelle is crying rape, and no one else is backing up her story, including the apparently sober 15 year old and Michelle's other friend.

I find myself agreeing with Duckideva,

Jesus Christ, if you're going to get drunk and f*ck a bunch of boys, either roll with your nymph tendencies or don't drink...pretty simple, really. Don't punish the boys because you're embarrassed.

Exactly.
