The Walking Dead (from Telltale Games) - Catch All

Amazing first episode. Short though -- maybe 1.5 hours. Any doubts I had about playing as Clem are gone.

I'm reassured to hear you guys are liking it, I was also worried about Clementine coming back and being the main character.

I have it downloaded and installed but I promised my girlfriend that I wouldn't play it without her, and she's out of town. That's true love.

Stevenmack, for spreadsheet'ing purposes, how long would you say it took? Two hours?

properly awake now...sort of...

according to steam you're spot on - 2 hours for me here.

I had no qualms about playing as Clementine. After Season 1, Telltale has my absolute trust. I did 400 days and then Ep. 1 tonight, and was richly rewarded for the experience. I am so, so very glad that games like this, Gone Home and Papers, Please all exist. My opinion here probably isn't totally trustworthy as these games are almost tailor-made for someone with my tastes, but I loved it, and I cannot, CANNOT wait for more.

Spoiler:

Between that scene in the shed, which had me just squirming, and the "Still. Not. Bitten.", Clementine may have just surged into the lead for my 2013 "Badass of the Year" award.

Probably the only downer was that I knew either Omid or Christa was going to die the moment Christa showed up pregnant. But if this is our starting point, we're going to build to a jaw-dropping, heart-rending season finale again. Hell, just having Clementine explain to her rescuers that everyone she knows is dead got things a little dusty.

What about Telltale's server issues I've been reading about all day today?

What server issues? I've had none on my end, and I'm on the other side of the planet.
A quick Google search leads me to believe there were a couple of issues about 13 hours ago, soon after launch, which is to be expected, but looks like it's been smooth sailing since then. Are you still having issues now?

I didn't notice a thing.

Right, I'm out of here until after I've had a change to play it... begone!

Wow. You have no idea how badly I want to click on those spoiler tags and be part of the discussion!!! Think I'll set aside Swapper and Borderlands 2 tonight or perhaps tomorrow especially for this first episode.

I deliberately replayed the lat part of that scene because my mouse pointer bugged out and I missed the chance to pick THAT conversation option, and there was NO WAY I was going to proceed without picking that option

But good grief the scene up to that point....just wow.

Spoiler:

Probably the only downer was that I knew either Omid or Christa was going to die the moment Christa showed up pregnant.

Spoiler:

Funnily enough I've since watched a few lets plays of the opening part of this episode and I'm suprised so many people were suprised Christa was pregnant. I figured that was common knowledge by the end of the first season? Hell it was pretty obvious from the dialogue when they first introduced the characters.

Also what are the odds that in the "next time on..." trailer...

Spoiler:

Assuming it's not Christa, that the character she thought was dead will turn out to be Kenny. My reasoning being that she's kept the drawing she did of Kenny's family with her (unless it's been burnt) and he's the only other character we don't technically see die

* Or OOOOOOh! Wait! What if it's Lilly! Forgot she's actually unnacounted for (Telltale officially made sure to point out that this was NOT the same Lilly from the "Road To Woodbury" novel since she was given a different backstory, so technically she's still out there somewhere)

Just finished, maybe its too fresh and too raw for impartiality but right now im gonna go ahead and say I didn't like it but from the looks of this thread I seem to be the only one. Before i get into the spoilers i think one of my big problems with season 2 is that Telltale seem to be focusing more on the action - faster more elaborate QTE, a LOT more QTE's, more violence - when it was the quiet, emotional decisions you are forced to make that made me fall in love with the first game. Where season 1 was like 90% story and 10% game this one feels like its pretty much 50/50.

Also i miss the 1-2-3-4 convo options of the first game, my mouse would keep bugging out at the worst times, and right now i feel like the option wheel they have over interactive objects is a step in the wrong direction. Maybe i will like it when i get used to it or maybe it was part of the whole mouse bug. On the other hand, while i didn't like how many of them there were and how long they took i feel like the QTE system now is more intuitive and just flat out better looking.

Spoiler:

Holy bloody gut punch batman. What a way to start the game! "OMG its Clem! Is she alone ? why is she alone ? where the f*ck are christa and omid ? Thank f*cking god. Everybody is safe. I love those guys" Two minutes later. "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" Cue instant depression. 5 minutes after that i had to kill a dog. 10 minutes after that i had to watch a 10 year old perform minor surgery on herself without anaesthetic. Maybe i'm forgetting how bad the series is but am i crazy for thinking this episode was too dark ?

Back to Clem. I find that i'm not playing Clem i am playing the ghost of Lee. I find that i play extra cautious as clem (trying my best to protect her) and i pick the silence option far far more then i ever did with Lee (not sure if i ever used silence with lee) and i sometimes don't pick conversation options because i dont think a 10 year old would say that. I guess what im trying to say is that with Lee i was free to completely build the character while with Clem i am playing to my pre-conceived notions of her. Not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing.

Felt shorter than the other episodes 1s.

Bathroom

Spoiler:

The adults letting Clem go into the bathroom alone was dumb. They wanted to take care of Clem in the first place and this how they do it.

I know Christa shot the bathroom girl but it didn't look like she aimed the gun at her. For a moment I thought she shot herself when she dropped the gun.

In the woods

Spoiler:

So what happen to the baby? Did the eat it.

Your boyfriend died over a year ago Christa get over it. It was Clem's fault. If anything it was your stupid fault for letting her go to the bathroom alone.

Where the hell is my gun?

The Dog

Spoiler:

I play with you and you try to eat me. F you doggy. Man I wanted to eat that dog. Why didn't she pick up the beans.

Jerks

Spoiler:

Clem didn't ask for help A holes. Then you jerks make Clem go all Lee on her arm for nothing. I want all these jerks dead.

The game ends really quickly. I didn't feel I did much. I did have fun though. There were a few bugs that had people standing around in rooms but not actually there. You could walk through them and couldn't interact with them.

Spoiler:

This was when I sneaked into the house by going under it and then sneaking into rooms.

You will want your old saves because your choices will effect the story.

Damn, this snuck up on me...

I really liked playing this last year, one episode per day over a week. I'm not sure if I want to get into these individually or wait for a bundle again.

Okay, is anyone playing on the 360 and can anyone PLEASE explain how to do the shed scene? I can't figure out this suture thing to save my life!

Wow I had a browser intelligence fail and turned the new season into something surreal. I was buffering "The Rift" on Amazon Prime, and it randomly started playing about halfway through the movie shortly after I started Season Two. I heard all of this pseudo-military chatter and kept thinking "Is Clem's radio still working? What's happening here? Is there a Naval presence and this is some oddly layered exposition?"

So I just completed the whole thing in one setting (under two hours, more like 1h30 or 1h45). Not bad at all. Definitely not what I expected, but that's not a bad thing. Can't wait to get the second episode, that's for sure!!!

Coolbeans wrote:

Not playing on the 360, but I did find that part a bit tricky. You have to hold the action button down, and then use the "right" key. Try pressing the "right" key a few times since it may not work on the first attempt.

Spoiler:

I'm guessing it's because she's trembling, and not necessarily aiming correctly, that's what you have to do it more than once sometimes.

I didn't feel there was an insane amount of QTEs, definitely felt on par with Season 1's episode one (which had the most, if I recall correctly). Not a fan on the wheel, but overall, the controls felt okay. No bugs or glitches on my end.

Impressions about different scenes ahead. Be warned, spoilers for episode one and season one, and loads of groundless speculation ahead.
Bathroom

Spoiler:

Yeah, didn't really expect Omid to die so quickly, and I love the character, so that was a bit of a blow. I kept reminding myself that this is the Walking Dead and everyone's fair game, however. Wasn't surprised that Christa was pregnant, that too seemed completely obvious from the subtext in Season one, namely their dialog when we first meet them and Christa's reaction to the forced abortions in Crawford.
Really wondering what happened to their baby, though. I'm kinda afraid that the poor thing died of starvation or something. The first episode is set 16 months after Christa is quite visibly pregnant, perhaps seven to nine months. So the child would theoretically have been 13-15 months. I don't know, but as mother myself, I shiver at the possibilities. An infant in a zombie and scavenger infested world? Not good.

In the woods

Spoiler:

I couldn't let Christa handle those guys alone. I was pretty sure their intent was to rob/rape/kill her. Not sure my intervention will have helped her (in fact, pretty afraid it didn't), but still...
At the camp, I was friendly and played with the dog, even fed him a bit of my beans, and yet he still attacked me. That sucks, it's probably scripted. When I saw him impaled like that... Ugh, poor thing, I just couldn't let him suffer.

At the cabin/shed

Spoiler:

Totally picked the "Still. Not. BITTEN." dialog option, it was just so fitting. I'm definitely playing as Clementine, not as a ghost of Lee. I'll be friendly and honest, but I'm not going to jeopardize my survival because of others. So if I have to hold back information or be tough as nails, I sure as heck am going to be.
I don't know about you guys, but that doctor Carlos feels kinda fishy. Seems like he's overprotecting his daughter, and that just isn't going to end well, for neither of them.
Was surprised to discover that Rebecca didn't know who the baby's father is. She seemed so possessive of her husband, I didn't expect her to cheat. Of course, we could be in a similar situation as the Rick/Lori/Shane triangle, but who knows. Regardless, when she confronted me in the dining room, I took care not to let her know I knew, in case it was her secret. I didn't want to risk antagonizing her further. From the "next time on TWD", however, it would seem that it isn't something she kept for herself, but I can't be sure.
Also, did anyone else take the watch one of the drawers in a bedroom? I felt bad taking it since I had no use for it...

Down by the river

Spoiler:

One of the women kinda looked like Christa, so I thought it was her initially. Since Clem didn't react, I guess it wasn't, but was still a weird moment for me.
I gave the scavenger water. Not sure what I accomplished there, but... I guess it was the humane thing to do, and maybe I was hoping he'd tell me what had happened to Christa.
At the end, I went towards Pete. That may not have been the right choice, because it seems he was bit at the ankle, but he's been the most levelheaded and helpful up to this point.

About the teaser for next time

Spoiler:

Since I picked Pete, it teased a possible amputation. If so, I hope it works, and that he lives. I kinda like the guy.
My guess is that the person Clementine knows Christa, or at least, I hope it is. But it could also be Kenny or Lilly. Even if you didn't burn the drawing and Lee's picture, those are removed from your inventory, so I don't think they'll come into play.

That's it for now, I guess, hot off the presses!!

One thing I noticed (season 2 + 400 days spoiler):

Spoiler:

Anyone notice the jacket one of the corpses by the river was wearing? I'm fairly certain that was Roman from the 400 days story line. He was kind of a dick so I don't mourn him much. The only reason I noticed was I played 400 days last night to get all caught up, so it was fresh in my mind. I didn't identify any of the other corpses though, I'm actually interested to see who shows up again from 400 days, they were an interesting batch of characters for sure.

Also (season 2 spoiler):

Spoiler:

I should have expected it, but that dog bite caught me completely off guard, scared the crap out of me! I still felt really sorry for the poor thing as I put it down though, it was clearly hungry. I was expecting it to bite me earlier, but the build up to that scene lulled me into a false sense of security, the bastards!

My choices for the season:

Spoiler:

Helped Christa.
Killed the dog.
Accepted Nick's apology.
Didn't give the dying guy water (f*ck him, he attacked Christa).
Saved Nick (old guy was bitten and thus toast already, which is a shame, he seemed the most trustworthy guy there).

Any one else get a creepy vibe from Luke? He seemed all friendly right at the beginning, but he turned quickly once he saw...

Spoiler:

Clem was bitten

... and then went right back to being nice again afterwards. I'll be keeping my eyes on him...

re: the dog.

Spoiler:

I also totally expected that reaction because that's pretty much the behaviour I would expect from even the most domesticated of dogs if stuck in that situation for an extended length of time.

That damned frisbee though....caught me off guard because of that damned frisbee....

re: the teaser

Spoiler:

Not sure if it would be Christa - didn't seem like the right sort of reaction from Clem when she saw whoever it is...that said, the "next on..." teasers are not always to be trusted in Telltale games. The more I think about it, the more I go back to Lilly - she's the only one from the first series who was very likely to have escaped unscathed, explaining how Kenny got away from the situation(s) he was in is a lot more problematic.

re: the new group

Spoiler:

Meh, Luke seems ok - too nice to survive for very long though. The Doctor...I think he's going to be a problem. And his daughter might as well have "The Next Duck" tattoo'd to her forhead. I totally made sure the pregnant lady knew what Clem had heard in the bathroom

re: the watch

Spoiler:

Didn't take it - I figured they'd quickly work out what Clem had done and I didn't want them to think she was just going to steal from them for anything other than what she needed to survive.

So, am I correct in the understanding that if I'm currently reading the Fables comics, this game won't be spoiled? Because the first Fables story is a murder mystery and as I understand it the first plot in the game is a murder mystery. Not the same murder right? Is there crossover between comics and game that could be a spoiler?

Well I don't see how the Fables comics could spoil the Walking Dead season one or two, but that's just me.

Or you could be posting in te wrong thread?

My choices for the season:

Spoiler:

Helped Christa.
Killed the dog.
Picked the "Still. Not. BITTEN to let the group know they were douches.
Accepted Nick's apology. (That was a mistake as I really wanted to let him know he was a douche also)
Didn't give the dying guy water. (I wanted to shove dirt in his mouth)
Let the Rebecca know I knew about her secret.
Saved Old Guy

I'll play it again with different answers, as I really wanted to play evil Clem first go. I guess my first round of choices is how I probably would have played it out in real life.

I played Season 1 on the 360 but then picked it up on Steam for cheap so played it through again last month in preperation for Season 2. What a return, I wasn't sure about the decision to play as Clem but it has worked great.

Spoilers

Spoiler:

That scene in the shed, wow, brutal.
I liked how they reminded you "This is Walking Dead" by not even let you settle in before Omid is killed off.
Might be wrong but the carplate you find in the woods could be a reference to 400 Days and playing rock paper scissors episode. I mean seems a bit random to have a number plate in the middle of the wood.
I didn't let on about Rebecca's secret in hope that I get to use it at a nice moment and destory her with it because she is just being a Female Doggo for no reason as far as I can see.
As for the Next Time - I hope it is Kenny but doubt it will be. As for Lilly, I'm not sure why Clem would think she is dead, I mean she was just left by the side of the road. There are lots of other options Molly? although again no reason to think she is dead. If it is Kenny, I will do a little dance around the room!

My choices:

Spoiler:

Helped Christa.
Killed the dog.
Accepted Nick's apology.
Didn't give the dying guy water.
Saved Nick.

Comics spoilers (from a long time ago) and Next on spoilers:

Spoiler:

If Kenny is alive, it'll be similar to Tyrese surviving being locked in the cafeteria during the prison arc during the comics. I think Lilly is a better guess, though, or possibly someone out of left field.

I can't wait for the next episode.

Played this straight this evening, and hot off the press reactions. I actually like plaing as a Lee-inspired Clem. I tend to approach people in the same way I did with Lee. Maybe I'm just playing as 'me', and not actually putting much character emphasis into it, I dunno.

Anyway, choices, reasons and other bits:

Spoiler:

Helped Christa - because there was nobody else...
Killed the dog, sorry Sam
Accepted Nicks apology - I don't even know why, but I tend to pick answers pretty quick so it's reactional.
Still.Not.Bitten - because Clem is an awesome, bad-ass.
Totally let Rebecca know I heard her - if she wasn't pregnant, I'd want to find some way to bury that b*tch.
Didn't steal the watch - Didn't need a watch? Did anything come of that if you took it?
Didn't give the dying guy water, becuase f*ck him.
Saved Nick - the old guy was already bitten. However I think I'm going to regret that choice from the tid-bit in the 'Next Time..' trailer.
Not sure what to make of the 'I though you were dead' fromt he tease - it could even be someone from season 2 ep1 that pops it at the start of episode 2, for all we know.

I play with an xbox controller, and have very little difficulties with action QTEs, interacting with things, and certainly not with conversation wheel, as the four buttons map to each answer.

Can't wait for the rest.

On a personal level

Spoiler:

the stuff with the dog was even more emotional because our old dog (who died some 10 years ago) was called Sam. Dam you Telltale!

About the particular spoiler, I didn't see any particular consequence from that action, although of course, that could come back to haunt me later. It wasn't in my inventory when I went fishing at the river though.
No issues going mouse+keyboard on my end, I'm not big on the controller (unless it's for a platformer or 2D something).

I play with a controller, as well. It's the only way to go, as far as I am concerned.

So many emotionssss. I've got the feels.

I think the controller adds a bit more tension during the QTEs since targeting is harder. And I'd rather move with a thumb stick than keyboard for a game like this. But it's really a small difference. I'm still playing old episodes, thanks to a broken save file. Excited to play as Clem though.
