Al Michaels officially out at MNF; ESPN names replacements...

From ESPN, naturally.

Mike Tirico, Joe Theismann and Tony Kornheiser? What's the over-under on how long this crew lasts? How long before America screams for the genius of Professor Screwloose in the booth?

Damn. My application must not have arrived in time.

Meh. Tirico is white noise, Theismann is unintentionally hilarious, and is Kornheiser can give me three funny quips per game, i'll be fine. Otherwise, there's always the "Mute" button.

Wrong show.

But Al Michaels is my favorite!

Off to NBC!

The moves leave Al Michaels free to switch to NBC, which takes over Sunday night games next season from ESPN. John Madden, Michaels' broadcast partner for the last four seasons, agreed in June to a six-year contract with NBC.

Guess this is why NBC hasn't said anything about who was joining John in the booth.

Madden will be dead from a heart attack before his contract expires.

Boom.

Mike Tirico, Joe Theismann and Tony Kornheiser

That sounds like possibly the worst mishmash of styles and personalities imaginable? All of those guys have been ok in their own right, but together? I guess we'll see how it works out.

I like Kornheiser as a host on PTI, but his charm as an old-hat sportswriter that doesn't always keep up so closely these days won't be endearing as a booth announcer.

Yep, my concern as well Legion. Especially with his famous "early bedtime" and no flying. Taking PTI on the road every Monday?

I like the Korn so i am willing to buy off on it for now. i dont particularly care for Theisman, but at this point I dont think my vote counts :).

Theisman is easily the worst announcer currently employed.. of the GOD AWFUL sunday night ESPN crew he was heads and tails the worst of the three.

He's going to last exactly one year... but then again.. he somehow got the job in the first place so perhaps people love him.

I could barely stand watching the Sunday night games because of them...so I'm not sure how I'm going to watch MNF now..

Perhaps Tony will reach across and strangle Joe with his tie?

He'll probably just have Wilbon give him a BEAT DOWN!

Eh, everyone has their own opinion. I was sad to see that team go off the air.

Nah.. in order to increase the ratings past a 2.1 they will invite L.T. to tackle him and break his other leg in two. With blood spurting all over.

And Pixar will make an CGI animal to take his place.

So if Al Michaels is not coming back for the NBA on ABC this season, does this mean he might join NBC for their Winter Olympics coverage? Well, that is unless there's some kind of clause that says he has to be off the air for a certain length of time before joining a competitor (which I know is common with news anchors). Do you believe in miracles?

/agreed

Although he did have one of the funniest ESPN commercials ever. The dogs playing poker breaking the pretzel sticks...I believe that was the way it went!

Guru, you can't be serious. While is Theisman is indeed terrible, Paul Mcgwire was like that annoying kid in the back of class who wouldn't shut his trap. He never knew what he was talking about, but by god, he was going let you know about it.

This makes me happy. I like Al Michaels, and I think that he and Madden make a great team. My other favorites are

Deidorf (sp?) and whats-his-name on CBS and Aikman and whats-his-name on FOX. It would be a great season if the games I want to watch are called by those teams each week.

They both were clueless... but the best is when they would both argue points even though the replay right on the screen as they were talking was CLEARLY contradicting exactly what they were saying at the time.

Dierdorf drives me nuts. It is a HUGE pet peeve of mine, but how do you give a national broadcasting job to a guy with that serious of a lisp. It's like having Sylvester the cat doing color commentary.

Michaels to NBC official.

He got traded for highlights, one day of Ryder Cup golf coverage, and a f*cking rabbit?

That's awesome.

I'm going to side with GG on this one. I actually stopped watching the Theismann broadcasts on two occasions...just because I find him so completely moronic and annoying. BUT, somewhere in TV land, they think he is a god - same with Madden, although, at one point, Madden was THE announcing god.

Quite frankly, I'd be fine if neither was seen announcing NFL games ever again.

My other beef with Theismann, (and GG nailed one on the head - in that Theismann is so enamored with his opinion as the infallible word, he'll contradict what actually happened just because he 'cannot' ever be wrong.) is that he works his 'push piece too hard'. Every game, you hear player x is the best wide receiver or OL in the game today (and he'll say that several time) - he does that to push his story lines, and generally ignores the game that is actually being played. There is not a more self absorbed announcer that I've EVER seen in the game in 35+ years.

He is the sukz!
