Saw this and thought of the Internet is a Mistake thread.
I believe this is my favorite JWST image yet.
The graceful winding arms of the grand-design spiral galaxy M51 stretch across this image from the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope. Unlike the menagerie of weird and wonderful spiral galaxies with ragged or disrupted spiral arms, grand-design spiral galaxies boast prominent, well-developed spiral arms like the ones showcased in this image. This galactic portrait was captured by Webb’s Mid-InfraRed Instrument (MIRI).In this image the reprocessed stellar light by dust grains and molecules in the medium of the galaxy illuminate a dramatic filamentary medium. Empty cavities and bright filaments alternate and give the impression of ripples propagating from the spiral arms. The yellow compact regions indicate the newly formed star clusters in the galaxy.
M51 — also known as NGC 5194 — lies about 27 million light-years away from Earth in the constellation Canes Venatici, and is trapped in a tumultuous relationship with its near neighbour, the dwarf galaxy NGC 5195. The interaction between these two galaxies has made these galactic neighbours one of the better-studied galaxy pairs in the night sky. The gravitational influence of M51’s smaller companion is thought to be partially responsible for the stately nature of the galaxy’s prominent and distinct spiral arms.
I ordered a new handheld air pump that gets used with these reusable ziploc/vacuum sealing bags; I use them for sous vide cooking and a few other things to help reduce waste.
At some point, somebody is going to see this in my kitchen and I expect some awkward silences.
"What's THIS for?"
"Pumping"
Hey Milkman, which bags do those get used with?
"What's THIS for?"
"Pumping"
"What's THIS for?"
"She has a name, you know."
Hey Milkman, which bags do those get used with?
I've been using them for a while, there's no particular brand, it's just "reusable vacuum sealer bags" on Amazon. They're heavy-duty ziplocs, have a little air bladder near the top. First go-round had a cheap plastic hand pump that broke, second one was a smaller rechargeable one that didn't look like a vibrator where the battery died, now I got this one.
There's a whole load of similar bags with different pumps. They work very well for sous viding, used them to marinate, also use them to do a few other things, but in my experience they don't seem to freeze well; I'm guessing residual moisture around the little air bladder expands as it freezers, and the seal isn't great for that.
Thanks!
Some neat tomatoes my family grew.
"Those look even more poisonous than regular tomatoes!" - Renaissance farmer, probably.
Reminds me of a joke my German friend once told me.
A man and a child are walking through the dark woods at night. The child cries "I am so scared". The man replies "YOU'RE scared? Think of how scared I will be when I have to walk all the way back alone!"
Yes, again.
A 25 year old plane that the Chinese already have the wreckage of. Yawn.
Damned queerphobic buses.
Eh, the dragon's will get them.
Yes, again.
OK, that stinger really got me. Well played.

I eagerly await his rebuttal.

Very cool
Thank you for the direct link! I was trying to text that pic to a buddy but it wasn't coming through well.
