And people say mentats are only book smart.

Thread should be fun.

Some what disturbing packaging text.
MOD Yup. adding the spoiler for self-harm. Same will go for all subsequent posts that quote it. ~dee

That is goddamned awful!

So bad the image should possibly be spoiler tagged with a warning.

agreed, we can do without this 'entertaining' image

To be clear, I'm not coming down on you farley. That image is just so unnerving.

Honestly farley there have been a few times this has happened recently. It might be worth just holding off on just blind posting whatever pops up on the front page of imgur for a bit? Or at least taking a moment to really consider what you're posting? It really does just seem like you'll make a post based on whatever is popular on that site, and then update the same post multiple times in the same day based on what is showing up over there. I'm not sure of the value in doing that when people can just go to imgur directly?

Feel free to let me know if I'm the only one or I'm out of line here and I'll back off.

For my part, I think you are out of line. Oftentimes, Farley is the only one posting images and he really keeps this thread going. Personally, I don't go to any other image sites so without Farley posting - i wouldn't get to see the good funny ones. I appreciate his participation in the thread. Let's also remember that(in my memory at least), without exception as soon as anyone says they don't like an image Farley immediately(when he sees it) either removes it or spoils it.

Not everyone has the same response to some of these pictures and some of us have a dark sense of humor. I laughed when I first saw the picture, but then immediately felt bad for my response once I saw people objecting. I now can completely see why that wouldn't be funny to people and wouldn't have the same reaction next time.

As someone who has gotten it wrong, I personally deeply appreciate the response of posters who object to the pictures, as it helps me recalibrate my sense of propriety. I am a much more open-minded and progressive person because of the conversations that have arisen over the years on this forum.

My .02$.

Fair enough--the fact that I do visit imgur and so I see the exact same pictures in the exact same order so I don't really get the same value of seeing it here when it's basically the same thing over there. I can see someone missing out on something by never going to the front page of another site. And you are right, farley does either remove or spoil the images without much of an argument--I just feel like I've seen it happen enough recently that I again questioned the value of reposting, but I can also understand that it's a quick edit once someone brings up an issue. Although I will say in this instance a picture of razor blades with the brand name "Do it" is a bit darker than the usual dark comedy, but it's already taken down so I guess it's fine.

I'll move along.

Even so, self-harm is perhaps one of the easiest-to-identify situations where content should probably be behind a warning and spoilered.

A little bit of extra time to think about what's being posted is probably not going to hurt anyone.

I also think that saying a call for a little more caution before posting is out of line is more out of line than the original call.

All fair points.

To add to what Sally said, every image is gonna offend someone. And that goes doubly for comedy, which lives and thrives in dark places.

That particular image was both funny as f*** AND liable to hit a subset of people in the feels. I laughed and didn't feel bad about it, and I think that's just fine, BUT, I haven't had to deal with suicide in my life, so of course it didn't hit me in a tender spot.

And Farley is due credit for accommodating every single complaint with a-spoilerin'. Should he spoiler everything pre-emptively? I feel like that breaks the thread - no-one wants to scroll through an entire page of spoiler tags.

I don’t have anything else to say except this. I am happy to spend a bit more time thinking about images but I know that folks have wildly different senses of what is appropriate so I am always willing to remove or spoiler something if asked.

It can be hard for some people (myself very much included) to judge when dark humor passes into uncomfortable territory since this is all very subjective. So mad props to Farley for going back and removing the image while also thanks to everyone for respectfully pointing out when someone posts something that crosses the line. This is community in action and I wish we could be this civil in all of our failures to see eye to eye

It's time to change my Avatar...

When did GWJ start allowing full-frontal nudity pics?

GWJ became a hardcore pornography forum so gradually no one noticed!

I can't find it with the phone app. Someone posted a beautiful unnamed photo of Flinders Chase, South Australia and some other people noted it was before the 2019/20 bushfires. I put this together to reply but the app scrolled on and here we are.

I mean, the dragon/car thing has been around for a while.

Are we implementing set rules for this thread? Some humor is dark, some is offensive, some is just downright hilarious. Comedians and comedy range wildly. I thought the image was hilarious. I didn't take it as anything that was worth getting offended over (maybe that says something about me, who knows). If I see anything that offends me some, I just move on. I don't see the need to sh*t all over Farley for it. He's one of the only people that keeps this thread alive. Without him, we probably should just move this thread to the MMORPG forum as it would fit with the amount of posts we see here.

Farley was gracious enough to make the image a link instead of posting it directly. But where does it end? Couldn't any comedic image offend someone in some sort of way? Wouldn't that mean that we have to censor everything? The image right before my post, what if I said brushfires offended me? That I knew someone who died in a fire and it was awful that he posted that image? Would he then have to censor that post?

People aren't wrong for getting upset or offended and they shouldn't be criticized for being so. Times are hard enough without practising empathy - let's err on the side of kindness.

We are not professional comedians on a stage performing, but even if we were, I would say that if there is even a tiny doubt about whether or not the joke will land - don't make it?

Pics thread needs pics.

Been looking at lots of cyberpunk stuff for DnD stuff. Thought I'd share some.

No, because I think people who have lost loved ones to fire understand not to expect the world to shape around them when the world is wholly unaware of their existence, which seems to be the allusion made here. The forest fire image above isn't framed and structured to address the viewer directly, wheras the razor image does implicitly. Context matters haha.

I used to go to a lot of live standup in the 90's and 00's when edglording was super popular, and some of that sh*t was pretty tasteless and dark. However people generally know and expect that when they show up. The more well-received shows were the ones where the comedian read the room and adapted their jokes or acknowledged the pushback and adjusted in a way that was wasn't adversarial. Joking and laughing with the crowd and not at them or their discomfort (i.e. employing empathy, who knew).

Jokes about self harm often skirt the line of taste in many varied social groups because it's near the edge of the big gray area that spans between the two binary end caps of acceptable and not acceptable for a lot of people, and it's not uncommon for folks to take issue with it (as mentioned by folks upthread). The implied act is also taboo for a lot of cultures or belief systems so...yeah.

Though I have grumbled about the size of the images Farley has posted in the past, and have sent him pm's on occasion about stuff that gets flagged, he is also often quick to spoiler or edit himself before we're aware when folks mention discomfort. It really seems to be no skin off his nose if there's one pic down and he's always been extremely cool about it. He does this for fun and doesn't intentionally want to actively harm anyone. Farley's always been open with us about this, and really does not seem personally invested in some goof ass darkweb meme enough to find it worth dying on a hill for.

I appreciate he keeps it contained to the picture threads.

So anyway, this is what my forties have been like so far:

Spoiler:

I too regularly stay updated on the picture threads, because I appreciate not having to read the comments on the images on those other sites

I had to google who Chad Kroeger was. He’s the guy holding a picture frame in that one meme, in case anyone else didn’t know.
