Post a picture, entertain me!

Paratroopers weren't smashing wing pins onto other paratroopers with their fists until their chests were bloody and torn from the very beginning. That's not how those traditions form. Traditions like that start off small and require an atmosphere that allows them to flourish and grow. To the point where they are no longer recognizable. One man's good fun is another man's hazing. Keeping traditions from becoming toxic requires people in charge with a good eye, a good sense, and wisdom of where to draw the line. That's a rare combination.

The professionalism police exists so that the atmosphere that allows hazing to develop does not happen.

I wasn't aware of your extensive operational military experience. I'd be delighted to hear examples of how people wearing Hawaiian shirts leads to hazing. Please also educate myself and those of us serving in the active-duty community as to what line of "fun" you've decided is acceptable. Presumably something that requires a signature in triplicate, but please do let me know.

I've been through some fairly comprehensive courses on aerodynamics... I mean military history.

Hmm, based on our aerodynamics discussion in another thread, I think this means that Jonman is about to show up and school both of us.

Don't be so sensitive, it was just a joke.

Eh? My reply was supposed to be a lighthearted reference to the other thread.

Good grief. I know that text is a poor medium for conveying nuance, but wow have I have I been getting called out on stuff recently that had no ill-intention on my part. It's starting to get a little worrying. I'm going to have to start vetting my posts for possible ambiguity that someone could take the wrong way. I'll be honest, it's this stuff that really has me questioning as to whether GWJ remains a good place for me to remain. And that's hard to say after nearly 14 years on the boards.

Listen, I was lining up that shot for a half hour. I wasn't about to not take it just because I didn't have the tone.

Anyway, don't be so sensitive it was just a joke.

Probably something you should've started practicing a while ago.

Here is some nightmare fuel to get us back to pictures

Guy does not let himself get typecast, you have to admit

Forgot assassin (from the Bourne series).

Also a god (Cupid in Xena/Hercules) and a Viking (Pathfinder)

He was also Julius Caesar in Xena. And a CIA (or something) assassin in Red.

He does play a gruff serious character in everything. Variations of the same character. I’m a fan but I usually know what kind of character to expect. It’s a bit like John Wayne or Timothy Olyphant. Actors I like to watch but I know what I’m going to get.

Timothy Olyphant's Mormon marshall was a nice variation on his theme, in Fargo season 4

When I mentioned this when I saw people getting offended by just about everything, I basically got told it was all me. Hopefully you don't have the same outcome

Coldstream, I know where you're coming from. I've been there.

And now, an entertaining picture of the world's largest neutrino detector:

When did we sign a research agreement with the Tholians?

I think Neo met the Architect in that room

You guys need some sort of a support group.

"Think before you speak in public" has always followed social mores. What's rude/offensive is going to change. Folks who complain that "everything" is offensive these days often have something in common: Some sort of privilege that has been shielding them from change up to that point, and tends to lead them to think of others as the problem. Their "everything" doesn't usually consist of that much. Maybe something solved with a little introspection. Not a big deal at all. However, their privilege leads them to stumble a lot more often. That makes it seem like a big deal. Repeatedly ignoring what's really a small problem tends to magnify it as well.

I say this because I've been there.

My favorite Neutrino detector picture (something I never thought I'd have)

~mod~

Less typing/snarking/flaming each other with attacks. More entertaining with pictures.
