Board Games

It is payday, and I have already spent some money on new games. When will I learn

Anyway, you guys play many board games? I have heard a lot about Settlers of Catan and thought I would pick it up, while on the site I saw some other games that look like they might be fun.

Fluxx
I played a few games of this at PAX and had some fun. It is very easy to learn and every game plays different as the rules change as the cards are played.

Settlers of Catan
As I said, I heard a lot of good things about this and want to give it a shot.

Carcassonne
Also have heard goo things about this game, though I have not played it.

Arkham Horror
Lovecraftian based Horror board games that is ridiculously complex, what more do you need?

Dungeoneer: Tomb of the Lich Lord
A simple card based dungeon crawl. Saw it and thought I might check it out. Seems there are more expansions to it and you can mix up the cards to make other adventures.

I got War of the Ring for my birthday and have been able to play it a couple of times. It's pretty nifty. I am a big fan of Risk and Axis and Allies so this was right up my alley. Big war game set during the Lord of the Rings trilogy (books). It's pretty complex, but it really captures what I love about the books that feeling of gandeur and desperation.

The problem I have with the LotR games (or any IP that recently becomes very popular) is that so many companies jump on the bandwagon and make product for it and I can't tell what is crap and what is really a good game. Makes me shy away from doing any research on these games unless someone points out that this game is good. Same thing happens with movies based video games you can never really tell just by looking at the box whether it is a game to make money or a game made for the love of gaming.

But now that you have pointed it out I will read up on the War of the Ring.

I really like El Grande and Medieval Merchant. Very well designed games with rules that feel very logical and organic to me. Very little luck involved too, which always annoyed me about games like Risk.

I remeber playing Settlers of Catan about 6 or 7 years ago (back in college). Was pretty fun from what I remember.

I own the board game version of Civilization, and highly recommend it. The one caveat is that a single game between 3 people can last an entire weekend (or more). Of course if everyone decides to just attack one another skipping the diplomacy and trading parts of the game it will probably only take 2-3 hours. Here's the website if you want to read up some more on it.

I also recommend Risk 2210. A friend of mine owns this and we've had many a fun night with it.

Settlers is a great game for a group of people, espcially since it doesn't take hours and hours to play. In addition, it's very replayable.

Risk 2210 is a blast as well, it fixed all the things that really bugged me about the original Risk.

Did they fix going into take out a 5 unit army with 30 and walking away with 10 remaining? That's what I hated the most about that game. Australia for the win!

Has anyone played Cathedral? I've heard good things about it, and it looks like fun, but I'm curious if anyone here has any experience with it?

I don't like games that don't involve either microprocessors or physical violence.

Risk sometimes involves physical violence. It's the game that taught me how to hate.

Check out www.thoughthammer.com for good game prices. I picked up Arkam Horror there for $33 vs. $45 at funagaingames. Its a fun very atmospheric coop game.

A fun little card game is BANG!. Great western gunfights as the outlaws try to take out the sheriff.

I also agree with Mumford that War of the Ring is cool game for those of us who missed out on the SPI verision all those years ago. Plus it has an expansion coming out this holiday season with more tactical battles!

If you crave diplomacy and galactic conquest check Twilight Imperium 3rd Edition. But be prepared to give up a day with 5 to 8 of your closest friends playing it!

We just play The Simpsons versions of Clue and Life games.

I wish I had any friends in the area that were into board games. I so wanted to get Twilight Imperium 3rd Ed. It just looks so nifty.

Damn you and your low prices, Now I have to cancle my order and replace it else where. Or I can just be lazy and pretend I did not read your post.

I know lets setup boards and play over web cams....
or maybe that is a bad idea. I do wish I had more friends I could convince to try new games with me. Most forms of table top gaming are a ton of fun, and seem more social then playing video games all the time.

I am posting this remotely so mind my spelling, thanks.

My wife works with some guy who's apparantly in the same position as I am, likes board games and has nobody around to join in. I should bug her to have this guy stop in sometime, then at least I could play War of the Ring more frequently than once a year with my friend in Ohio.

I can personally attest to Carcassonne being a fantastic game. It seems quite simple on the surface, but each time I play it I learn something new about the strategy of it. It is also quite viable as a two player game, something essential for my wife and I with a 2 year old. Also, unlike many of the games mentioned above, it can be played in a single 1-2 hour sitting.

I own Fluxx, which is good fun, but does lose it's allure quickly. Also, Stoner Fluxx has also been recently released which I hear is good if you that's your choice of lifestyle.

I'm a big fan of Settlers of Catan. I look foward to family gatherings knowing this will be played. I'd also highly recommend picking up the expansion that allows you to play with 2 extra people and increased board size. Adds a couple new rules that make the game much more exciting.

Gah, you guys really did your sales pitches well. Now I`m desperate for some board game goodness. Does any of us europeons here do know of some nice online shoppe that sells that crack on this side of the Atlantic, so my shipping doesnt double the total sum of the purchase?
Cause of language, I think I`m looking for some British outfit.

Lets see, I`ve had alot of fun playing the War of teh Ring. I have Flux and played it once it was not that fun because of the change in rules almost every card. Dungeoneer may be fun for the twelve year olds but keeping the flimsy dungeon cards in one place is a pain in the ass. Twilight Imperium is fun, but like Richy said it`s a time sink. Settlers was fun when I played it and look forward to playing it again. I remember Richy paying outlandish prices for wool when I had plenty to spare so I says, " You`re gonna pay bust-out retail for that?!?". He did just so I wouldn`t get the satisfaction of hearing him ask for some. Bastard.

Bang is tons of fun, quick and easy to learn

Shadows over Camelot is a GREAT TEAM game. You play together which is totally differnet type of game (but there is a traitor amongst you).

Arkham we played only once but looks like it has great potential as another team game.

Edit I know its been posted before but in case you missed it; www.boardgamegeek.com

Shadows over Camelot looks great. Thanks for pointing that one out.

The Warcraft game from Fantasy Flight is very good along with Chizo Rising from Temple games.

My next purchase will likely be this Descent: Journeys in the Dark. Big 'ole dungeon crawl with lots of crunchy bits.

That reminds me of Heroes Quest, which I should point out I still play pretty regularly. When we're feeling lazy, my D&D group busts it out, and it's always good fun.

I've got my fair share of board games in the closet.

Settlers is one of my favorites. It's the most fun with four players. Beware of sore losers at the end who will make bad deals just to play spoiler. Though, that's what makes it fun right?
It's tough rounding up people to play. Unless your talking about something familiar like Uno, or cranium, it's not an easy sell to casual gamers, much less non-gamers. But, as Ali G would say, alas, I digest ...

I played an on-line java version of SOC a few years ago. It was pretty good, but it had a few bugs.

Fluxx isn't one of my favorites, but ironically, that's one that is easy to get people to play because it's so simple.
The luck factor is a bit high for me.

A few of my other favorites are:
Carcassone
Through The Desert
Torres
El Grande
Risk

http://www.funagaingames.com/ is a very good resource for reviews and purchases.

Now if they would only re-release Dark Tower ...
