GWL FFL#2 Draft Order & Date (Sun 8:30pm EST)

Ok here is the draft order. I pressed the randomize draft button 3 times to set the final order and this is what it came up with.

1. Redhwk's Fantastic Footballers
2. Swampy's Centurions
3. Minaseans
4. Akbars infidels
5. The Drunken Wizards
6. Elysian Fields
7. Basrah Camels
8. Gaald's Phantom Pack
9. Karma's Bruhaha
10. Optimistic's Optimists
11. Squirrelmonkey's Irritants
12. Camel Toes

Draft Screenie just to make sure

I ran my draft for my "real life" league today. Boy, an in-person draft augmented with laptop computers on a web-based draft room is great fun, but a LOT of work for commissioner *Legion*!

I look very much forward to Sunday and Monday's GWJ leagues drafts, where I get to be just a participant.

We'll be on TS, for both I think

I have a question. Why the hell is the scoring system "1 point for every 49 yards passing". Why one yard short of 50?

Crap Crap Crap! 2nd pick and the f'king "Draft room" keeps crashing my freaking browser!

Goddamn it

I am using Firefox Swamps, works fine. Get on TS, I might be able to help.

If you can't get on TS, go to www.java.com and make sure you have the latest Java installed.

Too bad the draft order got whacky. Opti, let me know what you did wrong so I can avoid it for tomorrow's draft!

I'm pretty pleased with my starting line, I've got some great depth at running back with Carnell Williams and some strong up and comers at backup WR. We'll see how having two starting Bengals goes.

QB J. Plummer (DEN - QB)
RB S. Alexander (SEA - RB)
RB R. Johnson (CIN - RB)
WR C. Johnson (CIN - WR)
WR R. Williams (DET - WR)
WR D. Driver (GB - WR)
TE J. Wiggins (MIN - TE)
K J.Brown (SEA - K)
D/ST Buffalo

I didn't get on TeamSpeak until partway through the 1st round. I can't imagine any pre-draft ranking that makes Bennie Joppru the top pick, even IF the guy wasn't on the PUP list and therefore out until at least week 6.

I've written up a nice big "what I think about everyone's draft" thing but I refuse to post it until after tomorrow's draft, lest I give away great sleepers and pop the bubble on flubs.

Excellent, I'll look forward to that Legion

The only thing I need is if anyone remembers who was on auto-draft and who was not. I figured out a few myself. But during the draft, it was strictly planning and re-planning.

And I wish I didn't have to boot into Windows to use Teamspeak. The TS client for Linux sucks, though TeamSpeak 3 is going to use ALSA, thank god.

The reason this happened was I messed up the draft order and of course it made me #1 so I didn't think it was fair so I picked a player that would probably have no chance in playing so nobody would think I was cheating. Of course this messed up my whole draft but oh well.

Well I can't speak for others but I think it would've been suitable just to take someone more in line with your original draft spot. Like a Willis McGahee or something. Although frankly, the #1 spot isn't an advantage. Hell I picked last and I think there are only a couple of other people who drafted about as well as I did. Of course I'm biased, but still, I wouldn't necessarily prefer your spot over mine, or any spot in the middle. I would've been fine with you taking Tomlinson or any other potential #1 pick. You still have to live with the downside of the draft order.

That's what I was saying too, damn that Opti for being too honorable. There's no way I should have gotten Alexander in the 5th pick.

Well, thumbs down for foxsports auto pick.

Yahoo does much better. Buckhalter and 2 min RBs and 2 KC rbs?

Pfth!

How long is the 'lock' period?

I called the KC running back move one of the best moves of the draft, in my yet-to-be-published-but-I-guess-I-gotta-revise-it-now writeup. I forgot that it was auto-pick'd. You should be very thankful you got Larry Johnson to go with fragile Priest Holmes.

Damn your honor, man!

Lock period is 2 days after the draft. After that its every man for himself!

Yeah, I'll trade you any 2 of my RBs for that combo, dude.

Although that works out, the computer didnt plan it that way!

I just meant the 'boolean' picking that foxsports does is not as good as yahoo.

Also, when does the lock end?

Now that the #1 league draft is over, here's my draft review of the #2 league draft. Remember, these are just one man's opinions, and a lot of it depends on pick value in my eyes and on my boards. Injuries and freak dropoffs or explosions could rearrange things by week 3. But in terms of drafting quality value, depth, and generally putting yourself in a position to weather the season-long storm, here's my views:

In alphabetical order...

1. Akbar's Infidels - 8 wide receivers. Hmm. Must be auto-picker at work. Deuce McAllister taken in the 1st round, too early IMO (don't like the Saints' playing situation, I've downgraded most Saints players on my boards). Only has 3 RBs, and #3 Marshall Faulk isn't a starter for his NFL team. Getting a starter at #3 is one of the biggest key in a 12-man league IMO, because with only 32 NFL starters, four teams aren't getting a starter at #3 (and a few more get only marginal or "committee" starters). Got a steal at QB with Brett Favre so late in the draft, and Carson Palmer's a heck of a guy for a #2. Is going to have to jettison some WRs and get some bodies on his RB depth chart though.

2. Basrah Camels (me!) - Took Culpepper, who was the best value on the board at the time, but was surprised to see so many people ignore the QB position for so long. If I had known that, I might've slid the position too, but who knew GWJers HATE quarterbacks? Still, in a 6-pt passing TD league, there's a big dropoff from Manning & Culpepper to the rest of the QBs. Domanick Davis is a solid #1 option and LaMont Jordan is a borderline #1 himself (#12 RB on my board), so I was pleased that they got to me. Getting Byron Leftwich as a #2 QB was highway robbery, will finish better than a few teams' starters IMO. Moss is a top #1, and Jimmy and Rod Smith are swappable for #2. Duce Staley is out until about week 3-4 but will be a horse to ride from about 1/3rd of the season on. And Stephen Davis, not DeShaun Foster, is Carolina's starting RB, even though he's iffy for the first game. Got him in round 11 while someone else took Foster in round 7. Davis may or may not stay healthy and/or hold down the job, but he's Carolina's preferred option to start the season and that's major value as a #4 RB.

3. Camel Toes - LaDainian Tomlinson and Julius Jones are a great RB combo. Interesting move getting both Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald - whichever emerges as Kurt Warner's favorite target would be a nice fantasy boon, but there's a risk of points being spread too evenly between them for either to be a legit fantasy #2. I love those two starting RBs but backup RB is a bit of a mess. T.J. Duckett's OK but not his team's starter, but Eric Shelton is on injured reserve and out for the season, so that's a wasted pick. Marc Bulger's a great pickup in round 4, and you have to love having a guy like Eli Manning as your #2 QB, as he could step up and be productive, but doesn't hurt you much if he doesn't.

4. Certis' Drunken Wizards - Shaun Alexander, Rudi Johnson, and Chad Johnson in the 3RD ROUND is one-two-three home runs. I very nearly took Chad Johnson with pick #1 of the 2nd round. Roy Williams as WR #2? Nice. Nice also with Cadillac Williams in round 6 as a #3 RB. I'm not on board with Jake Plummer in round 7, but great move with Jake Delhomme in round 11! Delhomme may be this team's starter instead of Plummer, when all is said and done IMO. I like Tyrone Calico as a gamble and Jermaine Wiggins was one of the best picks of the draft IMO. Great draft, one I wouldn't be ashamed to call my own.

5. Elysium Fields - Can't see taking Edgerrin James over Shaun Alexander and Priest Holmes (or Peyton Manning!), and maybe not even over McGahee or Kevin Jones. Can NOT swallow Michael Vick as a #1 QB in this league, let along a 3rd round pick. Not in a league that awards 6 points for TD passes! Way too many points to be made in throwing TDs, something Vick does not do. Burleson was a great pick near the end of the 4th round - the WR value dropped off sharply after him (Coles, Driver, etc). Maybe a little too much faith in Ashley Lelie so early, but good recovery with Issac Bruce, whose freefall in fantasy drafts is astounding. Made a steal pick with Mike Anderson, someone I targeted but didn't have him fall to a draft pick where taking him would work. Good #2 QB in Warner, wouldn't exactly die of shock if he catches on in Arizona and ends up more valuable than what's-a-passing-TD?-Vick. Could easily see him throw for a lot of yards and TDs on a team that still goes 5-11 or 6-10. Marcus Robinson's not a bad last-round pick at all either, though Minnesota's WR situation after Burleson is a bit of a clusterfudge (Travis Taylor may or may not be the #2, Robinson and Troy Williamson are in the mix for #3 and #4, and Minnesota may even be bringing Koren Robinson in!)

6. Gaald's Phantom Pack - I just don't like Jamal Lewis in round 1. Not with a bum ankle and a history of knee problems. Curtis Martin in round 2 is nice though, even though I like some of the guys that went later in round 2 better. Trent Green is a great fantasy QB to have, although you always have to wonder when the ship is going to sink on older guys like him. It usually happens suddenly (see: Gannon, Rich). Made not one, but TWO "take Legion's guy the pick right before him" moves with Chris Chambers in round 5 and Reggie Williams in round 13. Fux0r j00 Gaald! Fumbled the ball with DeShaun Foster though, who enters this season as a backup to Stephen Davis, who I took much later, though Foster may get a couple of starts early while Davis continues to test his knee. Aaron Brooks is great value as a backup QB behind Green.

7. Karma's Bruhaha - Priest Holmes as pick #8 is awesome, but you have to "handcuff" Larry Johnson to him to realize full value. And Karma did! He didn't even have to reach too early (round 10) to lock it down. Definitely one of the draft "MVP" moves (by the auto-picker, it turns out ). I really don't like Tiki Barber over Rudi Johnson and the two Joneses (Julius and Kevin). Not with Brandon Jacobs taking over the goal-line duties. Always nice to get Tony Gonzalez and enjoy a weekly point-bonus at TE over whomever the other guy's got. Kinda shaky on the Jerry Porter pick though - Porter hasn't been able to step onto the field in preseason, and it's not like he was tearing up the stat sheet BEFORE Moss joined the team and became the #1 option. Kerry Collins in round 6 is probably killer value, even though I can't ever make that pick myself. Chester Taylor's a nice late-draft grab.

8. Minaseans - First four picks - TO, Harrison, Gates, and Hasselbeck - are all great. But then a kicker and a defense in round 5 and 6? Before you've taken a single RB? I'm guessing this was auto-pick'd. Could've been an even bigger disaster, but Warrick Dunn, J.J. Arrington, and Kevin Barlow might be able to squeeze out some serviceable points. Maybe gets lucky with Ricky Williams! Still, damn, not good at RB. I like having Pennington and Carr as backup QBs though. Koren Robinson is a wasted pick, seeing as the guy is no longer even in the NFL.

9. Optimistic's Optimists - And the first pick of the draft IIIISSSS.... two-time injured reserve, and currently PUP (physically unable to play = inactive until at least week 6, and may just end up on IR after that) Bennie Joppru! Never in fantasy history has a #1 pick been used on Bennie Joppru, and probably never has it been used on any tight end on the PUP list. Poor Optimistic felt the need to fall on his sword when the draft order got screwed and put him at #1 (I say, so what, you still get shafted in all the even numbered rounds). Things get a little better after that train wreck with Javon Walker in round 2, but Drew Bennett is way too early in round 3. And Ben Roethlisberger in round 4? PAIN. Chris Brown and Ronnie Brown are good values in round 6 and 7. Too early on Muhsin Muhammad in round 5, not with the Bears situation being what it is. Took his actual fantasy starting QB, Drew Brees, in round 11, not bad but there were still better on the board. I can't get behind very much that ended up on that roster though.

10. Redhwk's Fantastic Footballers - Manning was a great pick at #4 in a 6-points-per-pass-TD league! On my board, in such a league, he should have been picked #1, and no later than #2 behind Tomlinson. I think Clinton Portis is overvalued, and Brian Westbrook too though to a much lesser extent (especially since the league does reward receptions). I'd be disappointed if my top 3 receivers were Steve Smith, Derrick Mason, and Plaxico Burress. Smith is a top #2 but a questionable #1 to me, and the other two don't belong in a starting lineup IMO (yes Mason tore it up in the last 2 years in Tennessee, but now he's stuck in a stillborn passing offense thanks to QB Kyle Bonehead-err-Boller). But getting Charles Rogers at #4 may make a big difference - if Rogers stays healthy, he could produce and perhaps pass those guys and sneak into the starting lineup. I like the Cedric Benson pick as a #3 back, one I thought about making a few picks earlier. Having Kyle Boller and J.P. Losman on my fantasy roster would make me cower in shame, but thank goodness Manning doesn't miss games! Still, I'd draft Jeff Hostetler before taking one of those guys. Jason Witten was a nice grab, but I would've preferred it a round later.

11. squirrelmonkey's Irritants - Hooray auto-draft. Squirrelmonkey got not 1, not 2, not 3, not even 4, but FIVE running backs with his first 5 picks. Hooray! Well that position is taken care of pretty well, and QB's not bad with Tom Brady starting, but holy crap is wide receiver a disaster and a half. Eddie Kennison and Braylon Edwards as starters? Terry Glenn and Antonio Bryant might even out-value them! You have to work that auto-draft so that it doesn't do stuff like this to you, though I know FOXSports's auto-drafter isn't exactly the nicest tool.

12. Swampy's Centurions - Eek. McNabb I'm on board for, but Steven Jackson over Kevin Jones and Rudi Johnson? Hath thou forgotten what coach Jackson plays for? I can't be excited about Reggie Wayne as a #1 receiver, though Michael Clayton was a great pick after that. On my draft board, Clayton is ranked ahead of Wayne! A disasterous pick with Tatum Bell, who isn't even a starter for the Broncos. Lots of fantasy mags were certain he would win the job, but Shanahan gave it to Mike Anderson very firmly early in preseason, and Anderson gave him great preseason performances to feel secure about the move with. Bell could be value if Anderson gets hurt or flounders, but then again, Shanny is very high on Ron Dayne and if Anderson goes down, Bell could just be sharing carries with Dayne. Terrible move for a 5th round pick. I like Houshmandzadeh and Toomer as backup WRs. And Willie Parker is nice late-draft value as the fill-in while Staley and the Bus are hurt. But the RB situation on this team is, in a word, dire.

Nice run-down Legion, fun read

hmmm, all of a sudden our league isn't showing up on my list of leagues on Fox's fantasy homepage.

I think they are doing site upgrades or something, what loads and what doesn't is spotty.

Yep, I was out of town last weekend and got auto-picked. Time to make the most of whatever they gave me.

Looks like they got the league stuff back up, get your starting line-up in place ASAP in case they go down again.

So, Legion, maybe KoRo wasn't such a horrible auto-pick after all?

Vikings pick up Robinson

Maybe I have Certis-esque luck this year!

I'm still having trouble with the Fox site... I guess they underestimated the demand for their service.

No, he's still worthless.

He's stuck behind Nate Burleson, Travis Taylor, Marcus Robinson, 1st round pick Troy Williamson, and probably even Keenan Howry on the depth chart. #6 WRs have little fantasy value, unless 3-4 guys in front of him get hurt.

Travis Taylor has been sensational in preseason. Robinson is still a sideline jump-ball threat. And Williamson will get every chance to play.

And Robinson? He's an alcohol abuser who's on his last chance.

The talk has been that he is in contention for the number three spot. If he plays like he did a couple years ago they'd be crazy not to put him in.

No way do I play him over Marcus Robinson or Travis Taylor, unless Taylor suddenly reverts to Baltimore form (though I'm thinking perhaps it was the lack of a QB that killed Taylor's career in B-More).

Nor would I slow down the development of a potential gamebreaker - Williamson - by taking away any spare playing time from him. Williamson is going to get on the field.

We've seen what Koren can do - come damn close to leading the league in drops and drop percentage. Maybe it's a matter of one ball for him, and one for his homies. He had a lone good season in 2002. I think there's an inflated belief in his abilities because he came into the league as a 1st round pick.

Let's not forget what a time bomb this guy is. He was benched last year in week 2 for showing up late to a team meeting. He was suspended for 4 games during the season for substance-abuse policy violation. When he came back, Mike Holmgren told him he would only play in their playoff game if Koren promised to get help in the offseason. Koren agreed and played. He supposedly checked into detox. And then in May he gets charged for DUI and reckless driving. He gets a 1 day jail term with a suspended sentence for the other 364 days. And THEN, Koren shows up to his 1-day of jail DRUNK! That was in JULY. This stuff isn't in the somewhat-distant past. This is a guy that is actively drinking & pissing away his NFL career.

I don't think Koren competes for the #3 job, myself. I don't know if he can even be counted on to walk a straight line. I don't think Koren gets on this team if not for the fact that Kelly Campbell (the guy cut to make Koren's spot) missed the entire preseason with a strained quad, and didn't look good to go from here on out. They're taking a gamble on a guy to fill their last WR spot.

Although I don't put it beneath Mike Tice to do something dumb/crazy/etc. Well, Koren's signed, so he already did.

But that's just my take.
